Survival of the Affordable Care Act Rally
ALLENTOWN - Local supporters of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) had planned a “die-in” this week to dramatize the human impact of the proposed repeal of healthcare law. Instead, this Tuesday, March 28, representatives of the coalition will gather at 6:30 PM at the Resurrected Life Community Church Academy, 144 N 9th St, Allentown, to celebrate the Trump Administrations failure to repeal the ACA and to map plans to preserve and expand the ACA. “This is what winning looks like,” said Jude-Laure Denis, executive director of POWER Northeast, a member of the coalition. “And we're not done yet. We’re part of a national movement. Thanks to the tireless efforts of thousands of local supporters making office visits, phone calls, faxes, marches, and rallies, we have protected health care coverage for tens of millions of people.”“Because so many local supporters showed up with relentless commitment, we can put our tombstones away and live to DIE-IN another day. We know that attacks on the Affordable Care Act will likely continue through legislation, executive action, and regulatory reform. We have won a huge battle, but the war is not over.” Other organizations co-sponsoring the event include the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Pennsylvania Health Access Network (PHAN), Planned Parenthood, and Tuesdays with Toomey. POWER Northeast (Pennsylvanians Organized to Witness, Empower & Rebuild) is an interfaith, interdenominational organization committed to building a more just and inclusive Lehigh Valley by:· improving race relations and building relationships through an equity lens·advocating for economic justice, equity in education and fair funding, immigrant rights and civic engagement in marginalized communities·engaging the formerly incarcerated and their families with stigma‐free opportunities for second chances and leadership development in the movement to end mass incarceration as we know it. Faith-based but not faith exclusive, they believe that we are one people and that when one of us suffers, they all suffer. Blau Speaks at Bangor GFWC Meeting
Marc Blau of the Slate Belt Heritage Center spoke to the Bangor Womens Club at their March meeting. He spoke about the book he and his committee of Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer, and Deanna Ruzanski assembled and published "Letters To Homefront Magazine A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers". In addition to the committee they recruited volunteer readers to help them read and grade the content of the 4000+ letters written to Bangor residents and magazine publishers Horace and Mona Strunk. Karen Bodine, club member pictured with Marc was one of the volunteer readers. Marc described the magazine was the forerunner of Facebook and Twitter. The book was divided into chapters. One chapter was "Fairest of the Month"; three club members Virginia DePue, Doris Deen, and Janet Jones were among the young ladies featured. Marc related the amazing story of how the magazine started in 1942 with 13 pages and was published monthly for 42 months until 1946 when it had grown to 60 pages. Every issue had a different front and back cover. Local churches helped in this project by tracking the wearabouts of their members and handling the mailing. It was published in Easton by a publisher who did not accept monetary payment, claiming the morale of these soldiers was more important than money. When Horace was drafted and went to war, Mona continued to publish the magazine on her own. She went to testify before Congress in Washington DC to request a special exception from the paper rationing that was in effect and got unlimited quantities of paper. The Slate Belt Heritage center was very fortunate to obtain copies of all the magazines and have them in a special display at the center. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday April 18 at Prince of Peace Church, Johnsonville, PA at 12 noon. Anyone interested in attending please contact Ellen at 570-897-5787 for full information. Nuclear accident at Three Mile Island - 1979 At 4 a.m. on March 28, 1979, the worst accident in the history of the U.S. nuclear power industry begins when a pressure valve in the Unit-2 reactor at Three Mile Island fails to close. Cooling water, contaminated with radiation, drained from the open valve into adjoining buildings, and the core began to dangerously overheat. The Three Mile Island nuclear power plant was built in 1974 on a sandbar on Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna River, just 10 miles downstream from the state capitol in Harrisburg. In 1978, a second state-of-the-art reactor began operating on Three Mile Island, which was lauded for generating affordable and reliable energy in a time of energy crises.
At the height of the crisis, plant workers were exposed to unhealthy levels of radiation, but no one outside Three Mile Island had their health adversely affected by the accident. Nonetheless, the incident greatly eroded the public’s faith in nuclear power. The unharmed Unit-1 reactor at Three Mile Island, which was shut down during the crisis, did not resume operation until 1985. Cleanup continued on Unit-2 until 1990, but it was too damaged to be rendered usable again. In the more than two decades since the accident at Three Mile Island, not a single new nuclear power plant has been ordered in the United States.
