Environmentalist Bill McKibben to speak at NCC
Best-selling author and environmental activist Bill McKibben will present “Reflections on the Climate Fight” on Wednesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. at Northampton Community College’s Spartan Center in Bethlehem Township, Pa.
McKibben’s most recent book “Oil and Honey” gives readers a firsthand perspective into his global battle against fossil fuel companies and a glimpse into the local landscape for which he is fighting. An author and environmentalist, he is a founder of 350.org, the first planet-wide, grassroots climate change movement, which has organized 20,000 rallies around the world. His 1989 book “The End of Nature” is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change, and has been published in 24 languages. McKibben has since published more than a dozen books on the environment. The Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he was the 2013 winner of the Gandhi Prize and the Thomas Merton Prize, and holds honorary degrees from 18 colleges and universities. Foreign Policy named McKibben to their inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers, and the Boston Globe said he was “probably America’s most important environmentalist.” He is a former staff writer for the New Yorker magazine, and writes frequently for a wide variety of publications around the world, including the New York Review of Books, National Geographic, and Rolling Stone. In 2014, biologists honored him by naming a new species of woodland gnat— Megophthalmidia mckibbeni--in his honor. The “Reflections on the Climate Fight” lecture is the culminating event in the college’s 2016-2017 Annual Humanities Series “Flying Free: Birds and the Human Spirit” made possible by an endowment from the National Endowment for the Humanities and generous donors. Community partners include the Bethlehem Area Public Library, Eastern Monroe Library, Bethlehem Area School District, Historic Bethlehem Museums and Sites, Stroudsburg Area School District, and Monroe County Historical Association. NCC Youth Scholastic Chess Championship Calling all young chess players! Northampton Community College (NCC) will offer its 16th Annual Spring Youth Tournament on Saturday, March 25, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at College Center, on the Bethlehem Campus. There will be United States Chess Foundation (USCF)-rated rounds for young people ages 18 and younger, and non-rated rounds for children ages 14 and younger. Each player will get to play 5 rounds. Bald Eagle Nest Cam in Hanover, PA - Live Click On Photo To See Nest

Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family. The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest. Hanover is located in south-central PA about five miles from the Mason-Dixon line. Bangor Womens Club GFWC Scholarship The Bangor Womens Club GFWC is offering a $1000 scholarship for a senior student from Bangor High School or Faith Christian School. Students interested in applying for this scholarship may obtain an application from the school guidance office. Applicants must be planning to begin their college education in September. The deadline to submit applications is April 15, 2017.

Exxon Valdez runs aground - 1989
One of the worst oil spills in U.S. territory begins when the supertanker Exxon Valdez, owned and operated by the Exxon Corporation, runs aground on a reef in Prince William Sound in southern Alaska. An estimated 11 million gallons of oil eventually spilled into the water. Attempts to contain the massive spill were unsuccessful, and wind and currents spread the oil more than 100 miles from its source, eventually polluting more than 700 miles of coastline. Hundreds of thousands of birds and animals were adversely affected by the environmental disaster. It was later revealed that Joseph Hazelwood, the captain of the Valdez, was drinking at the time of the accident and allowed an uncertified officer to steer the massive vessel. In March 1990, Hazelwood was convicted of misdemeanor negligence, fined $50,000, and ordered to perform 1,000 hours of community service. In July 1992, an Alaska court overturned Hazelwood’s conviction, citing a federal statute that grants freedom from prosecution to those who report an oil spill.
Exxon itself was condemned by the National Transportation Safety Board and in early 1991 agreed under pressure from environmental groups to pay a penalty of $100 million and provide $1 billion over a 10-year period for the cost of the cleanup. However, later in the year, both Alaska and Exxon rejected the agreement, and in October 1991 the oil giant settled the matter by paying $25 million, less than 4 percent of the cleanup aid promised by Exxon earlier that year. BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement. Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. NCC Cooking Demo and Tasting with Alumni
Seeing is believing, but tasting is, too! Northampton Community College culinary arts alumni will share tips as they prepare delicious dishes at the Robert C. Wood Chef-in-Residence spring program on Monday, March 27 at 6:00 p.m. in Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
Dishes prepared will include Middle Eastern curry tuna and scallop, red crimson lentils, duck rillette, cereal milk panna cotta, and other items. Audience members will get a taste of each dish.
The chefs will include Shawn Doyle of Savory Grill, Dan Goulet of Lords Country Club, Tyler Baxter of Emeril’s Chophouse, and Kelly Stem of Hampton Winds.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

The Blue Mountain Community Library will be holding a “Library Night at Wendy’s” Fundraiser on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Wendy’s Restaurant, route 512, Wind Gap, PA will generously donate a portion of all sales that night to the Library in Pen Argyl. The fundraiser will include dine-in, take-out and drive-through orders. Please consider supporting the Blue Mountain Community Library by purchasing a meal from Wendy’s. The money will be used to purchase new books and to meet the many expenses associated with maintaining the building. Citizen's Police Academy
Slate Belt Regional Police Department is proud to announce their FIRST Citizen's Police Academy, which will run every Thursday, from April 6th - May 25th, 7pm-9pm. The goal of the police academy is to familiarize community members with the inner workings of their local police department and judicial system, as well as forging relationships between the department, officers and the community for which they serve. Only 20 students will be accepted into the program. Criminal background checks will be performed on applicants; those having been convicted of a felony will be disqualified. The Blue Mountain Community Library will hold its 3rd Antiques Appraisal and Silent Auction Event on Friday, April 7, 2017, from 5:30-8:00 PM at Slate Belt Nazareth Baptist Church, 1620 Church Road, Pen Argyl, PA 18072. The antiques appraisals will be conducted by licensed auctioneers Lori Biechy of Lori Biechy Auctions, Christian Answini of Saucon Valley Auction Co., and Les and Ginny Beyer, all who are generously donating their time and expertise. In addition to the appraisals, the event will feature a Silent Auction of over 50 items, including Baskets and Gift Cards, donated by a large number of area businesses. First Round of JazzFest 2017 Events
Performing Arts Live released the first portion of the Allentown JazzFest 2017 schedule. The program has broadened to include live spoken word and conversation performances, and will introduce new musical styles into JazzFest. Consistent with prior years, a large majority of the overall schedule will be free to the public. JazzFest opens on Wednesday, May 3, and concludes Sunday, May 7, 2017.
