Officials searching for cobra that escaped
from Florida home
(UPI) -- Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials are searching for a cobra that escaped from a local home. The FWC shared a photo of the suphan cobra along with a press release warning residents of the ongoing search for the snake in Ocala.
"Monday evening at about 11:15 p.m., Venomous Reptile Permit (VRC) licensee Brian Purdy contacted the FWC to inform investigators that his 24-inch long cobra had escaped its enclosure at about 9 p.m. that evening," the press release stated. "After an initial search, nearby residents were notified of the escape."
Purdy told police another man was shadowing him in order to obtain his own venomous reptile permit and accidentally let the cobra out while Purdy was at work.
He was searching for the cobra in its container when he lifted off the lid, allowing the snake to spring toward him and slither away.
Purdy and the man were unable to find the cobra after searching for an hour and half, but did find one of his large lizards with an engorged stomach.
The men took the lizard to a veterinarian to determine if it had eaten the cobra, but the results of the x-rays and other tests were inconclusive.
Residents were alerted about the loose snake and encouraged to contact the FWC if they happened to spot it in the area.

4 tips to help protect your identity
this tax season
(BPT) - Tax season is a busy time for everyone. From accountants and small business owners to families and individuals, especially as more people choose to file their taxes themselves. Unfortunately, it's also a busy time of year for cybercriminals who use the flurry of activity to swindle sensitive personal information from unsuspecting victims. In fact, the Norton Cyber Security Insights Reports revealed that online crime has become so prolific, 36 percent of U.S. consumers believe it's only a matter of time before a criminal steals their identity.
Take for example, Melissa, a marketing manager from Chandler, Arizona, who last year received an alert from her online tax filing service that her account password had been changed. But she dismissed the notification as a mistake.
"Two days later I got an alert from LifeLock about a credit card that I hadn't opened."
Thinking this was strange, Melissa followed up with her tax filing service and found that a criminal had accessed her account, stolen enough personal information to open a credit account in her name and redirected her tax return to another account.
Fortunately, Melissa was able to resolve her case but she is just one of a staggering number of individuals who've fallen victim to criminals lurking the web. According to research from Symantec, cybercriminals launched more than 1 million web attacks against internet users every day in 2015. While this statistic may seem shocking, there are things you can do to help protect yourself and your identity from cybercriminals.
Start by applying these four simple tips to keep your personal information away from cybercriminals this tax season:
1. File your taxes as early as possible. The sooner you file your taxes, the harder it will be for criminals to file taxes on your behalf for a refund, which a thief can do with only your date of birth and Social Security Number. (And don't think this information is difficult to find, it could already be for sale on the Dark Web if you were impacted by a data breach.) If you want some extra protection this tax season, consider contacting the IRS to see if you're eligible for an Identity Protection PIN. It's a six-digit code that is assigned to you by the IRS to help prevent misuse of your SSN on fraudulent federal income tax returns.

They will never request personal and/or financial information through email, text messages or social media sites. If you receive a letter in the mail and you're not sure if it's legitimate, use the IRS lookup tool to find your letter: www.irs.gov/individuals/irs-notice-or-letter-for-individual-filers
4. If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, ask for their name, badge number and call back number. Report the call to the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1-800-366-4484 and provide this information to confirm the authenticity of the caller's request. If the caller isn't willing to provide this information, hang up and report the incident to the IRS.
If you believe you've been the victim of an IRS scam, you may also report this to the TIGTA at their website: www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml. Don't delay in doing so. After all, it's your identity and it is up to you to protect it every single day.

(BPT) - In spite of the well-documented drawbacks of not eating breakfast, approximately 30 percent of Americans are still failing to fuel themselves in the morning, according to WebMD. And many of those moving through their days with empty stomachs blame a lack of convenience.
Earlier this year, the Washington Post pointed to research showing millennials consider even breakfast cereal too inconvenient. And research cited in the Huffington Post indicates Americans 18 and older who miss their first daily meal most frequently blame lack of hunger or an overly busy schedule.
However, several studies point to adverse health and cognitive effects from missing breakfast. Consumer Reports indicates eating within two hours of waking promotes the metabolizing of your glucose or blood sugar all day, in turn boosting your energy. "Don't skip breakfast," advises researcher Dr. Leah E. Cahill of Harvard Medical School. "Incorporating many types of healthy foods into your breakfast is an easy way to ensure your meal provides adequate energy and a healthy balance of nutrients."
Experts recommend those in the habit of skipping breakfast instead optimize ultra-easy and ultra-convenient comfort food meals. Most recipes can be made ahead and stored in your fridge for mornings when you're short of time and energy. BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship
A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement.

The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.

A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers
The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. STROUDSBURG - The Rotary Club of the Stroudsburgs presents its 7th annual Not Just Another Auction, “The Luck of the Rotary,” on Thursday, March 16th, 2017, 6-10PM, at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort. The auction includes an Irish inspired buffet dinner, entertainment, silent and live auctions and a cash bar. Tickets are $50 per person and sponsorships, as well as in-kind donation opportunities, are available for both the silent and live auctions.

Vernal ponds are temporary bodies of water that form in spring from rain and snow melt. These ponds lack predatory fish and are used by frogs and salamanders to breed and lay eggs. Join us for this evening adventure to explore these woodland ponds in search of amphibian wonders. Please dress for the weather, wear waterproof footwear, and bring a flashlight. Registration is required.

BMCL Night at Wendy's
The Blue Mountain Community Library will be holding a “Library Night at Wendy’s” Fundraiser on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Wendy’s Restaurant, route 512, Wind Gap, PA will generously donate a portion of all sales that night to the Library in Pen Argyl. The fundraiser will include dine-in, take-out and drive-through orders. Please consider supporting the Blue Mountain Community Library by purchasing a meal from Wendy’s. Cavatelli Dinner, Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the Columbia Fire Company 164 Garibaldi Ave., Roseto, PA. Proceeds to benefit the Bangor Area High School Bands. Citizen's Police Academy
Slate Belt Regional Police Department is proud to announce their FIRST Citizen's Police Academy, which will run every Thursday, from April 6th - May 25th, 7pm-9pm. The goal of the police academy is to familiarize community members with the inner workings of their local police department and judicial system, as well as forging relationships between the department, officers and the community for which they serve. Only 20 students will be accepted into the program. Criminal background checks will be performed on applicants; those having been convicted of a felony will be disqualified. Antiques Appraisal and Silent Auction
The Blue Mountain Community Library will hold its 3rd Antiques Appraisal and Silent Auction Event on Friday, April 7, 2017, from 5:30-8:00 PM at Slate Belt Nazareth Baptist Church, 1620 Church Road, Pen Argyl, PA 18072. The antiques appraisals will be conducted by licensed auctioneers Lori Biechy of Lori Biechy Auctions, Christian Answini of Saucon Valley Auction Co., and Les and Ginny Beyer, all who are generously donating their time and expertise. In addition to the appraisals, the event will feature a Silent Auction of over 50 items, including Baskets and Gift Cards, donated by a large number of area businesses. Barbecue, hot dogs, other food items, and beverages will be for sale. For food purchase and auction participation, cash and checks will be accepted.

NCC Kraus Freshman Drawing Competition
Northampton Community College (NCC) will exhibit entries to its annual Patrick J. Kraus Freshman Drawing Competition from March 31 – April 13 in the gallery of Communications Hall. The gallery is open Monday – Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. It is closed on Sunday.
An awards reception will take place on Wednesday, April 12, at 11:00 a.m. in the gallery.

First Round of JazzFest 2017 Events
Performing Arts Live released the first portion of the Allentown JazzFest 2017 schedule. The program has broadened to include live spoken word and conversation performances, and will introduce new musical styles into JazzFest. Consistent with prior years, a large majority of the overall schedule will be free to the public. JazzFest opens on Wednesday, May 3, and concludes Sunday, May 7, 2017.
Today’s announcements are the first of a group of performer announcements that will stretch over the next three weeks. It is expected there will be 6 or 7 additional performances to be announced.
All the 2017 events will occur in the Hamilton Street downtown area between 9th and 5th Streets, except for one event in Emmaus. The schedule can be viewed and tickets can be purchased through allentownjazzfest.org.

A fundraiser to benefit Bangor band member Elizabeth Goffinet's AMA trip to Europe to represent the band will be held at the Bangor Elks Sunday, May 7 from 4-8pm. Tickets include food and drinks, entertainment, 50/50 sold the day of the event.Tickets are $20.00
They are looking for businesses who would like to donate items for a raffle as well.
AMA is the American Music Abroad. It is comprised of musicians from High Schools from PA and New Yotk and are recommended by the school Band Director

The Bangor Elementary School PTO third annual GLOW SLATERS GLOW Neon 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held Saturday May 13 at the Bangor Area School District Complex. The 5K run begins at 9:00am, the Fun Run/Walk begins at 9:15am. There will be five splatter stations.
