Snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches with these higher amounts confined to higher elevations near I-80. Rain gradually overspreads the area from northwest to southeast early this morning between 4 and 6 am. A quick changeover to snow is expected within an hour after the rain moves in. The snow may be moderate to heavy at times, with snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour possible, between 6 and 10 am, which coincides with the morning commute. Snow will become lighter from west to east during the late morning and gradually taper off by early afternoon. Telephone: (610) 588-1174 [email protected] http://www.columcille.org Rebellion in Tibet - 1959![]() On this day in 1959, Tibetans band together in revolt, surrounding the summer palace of the Dalai Lama in defiance of Chinese occupation forces. China’s occupation of Tibet began nearly a decade before, in October 1950, when troops from its People’s Liberation Army (PLA) invaded the country, barely one year after the Communists gained full control of mainland China. The Tibetan government gave into Chinese pressure the following year, signing a treaty that ensured the power of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the country’s spiritual leader, over Tibet’s domestic affairs. Resistance to the Chinese occupation built steadily over the next several years, including a revolt in several areas of eastern Tibet in 1956. By December 1958, rebellion was simmering in Lhasa, the capital, and the PLA command threatened to bomb the city if order was not maintained.
The March 1959 uprising in Lhasa was triggered by fears of a plot to kidnap the Dalai Lama and take him to Beijing. When Chinese military officers invited His Holiness to visit the PLA headquarters for a theatrical performance and official tea, he was told he must come alone, and that no Tibetan military bodyguards or personnel would be allowed past the edges of the military camp. On March 10, 300,000 loyal Tibetans surrounded Norbulinka Palace, preventing the Dalai Lama from accepting the PLA’s invitation. By March 17, Chinese artillery was aimed at the palace, and the Dalai Lama was evacuated to neighboring India. China’s stranglehold on Tibet and its brutal suppression of separatist activity has continued in the decades following the unsuccessful uprising. Tens of thousands of Tibetans followed their leader to India, where the Dalai Lama has long maintained a government-in-exile in the foothills of the Himalayas. In Case You Missed It......

Parks Victoria said the salt lake in Melbourne's Westgate Park has turned pink, a natural phenomenon that has occurred before "in response to very high salt levels, high temperatures, sunlight and lack of rainfall."
"Algae growing in the salt crust at the bottom of the lake produces the red pigment (beta carotene) as part of its photosynthesis process and in response to the extremely high salt levels," Parks Victoria said in a Facebook post. The group warned visitors not to drink or touch the pink water. "Enjoy the views, but we recommend you don't come into contact with the water," the post said. "The lake is expected to return to its normal color towards winter, when the weather cools and rainfall increases." Real Estate...5 fast shortcuts to make your home sparkle this spring![]() (BPT) - We all know that one person who just adores cleaning. But for the rest of us, it's a necessary evil that gets old very quickly!
Before you tackle that long list of spring cleaning tasks, try some of these cleaning hacks designed to make these chores faster and easier. When cleaning is fun and even effortless, you'll feel more energized and gain the momentum you need to knock out your list of chores. Afterward, your house will sparkle from top to bottom, which is its own reward! 1. Find smarter tools Throw out the messy bucket and mop and reach for a smarter floor solution that's efficient and fun to use. For example, the O-Cedar EasyWring Spin Mop & Bucket System has a built-in wringer that offers superior moisture control of the mop, which makes it safe and easy to use on all hard floor surfaces - even hardwood! The hands-free wringer requires a simple press of the foot pedal to easily spin out the water and help finish the job with less mess and faster drying times. 2. Try natural solutions Commercial cleaning solutions can add extra costs to your deep cleaning session, not to mention the harsh chemicals can leave behind unpleasant odors. Why not experiment with everyday pantry items? These often cost less and are just as effective in their cleaning power. A simple solution of warm water and vinegar removes built-up grime from your floors, while leaving a clean, rinse-free finish. Just add a half cup of distilled white vinegar to a gallon of warm water and start mopping. If you dislike the smell of vinegar, add a couple drops of your favorite essential oil - the fresh scent will be like a small reward! 3. Shortcut to shining windows If you want streak-free mirrors and clean windows without the hassle, Cas Aarssen, author of "Real Life Organizing: Cleaning and Clutter-Free in 15 Minutes a Day" and the YouTube channel ClutterBug, has this expert tip: Add a teaspoon of cornstarch to your favorite glass cleaner and shake until dissolved. Cornstarch improves the cleaning power of the solution and makes streaks a thing of the past, so you'll get the job done more quickly. 4. Use a cleaning method that also protects Aarssen has an easy tip that will not only shine up your kitchen appliances, it will repel fingerprints and food splatters often left behind. Just spritz on a little wood furniture polish and rub in with a soft cloth until the surface shines like new. 5. Clean up top Dust can collect on those high, hard-to-reach places, such as decorative molding and ceiling fans, making cleaning day more difficult. To clean your ceiling fan without showering dust bunnies everywhere, an old pillowcase is your best tool. Spritz the inside of the pillowcase with a vinegar and water solution and slip it over the blades of the fan, pulling it back to trap the dust. For those tough to reach moldings and corners, use a sturdy rubber band to wrap a microfiber cloth around the end a broom, and give those hard-to-reach areas a clean sweep! BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement. Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship should see the guidance counselor at Bangor High School. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267.
