Making People Feel Bad![]() Janissa Delzon, Medical Daily
It’s generally frowned upon to purposefully make someone feel bad, but new research suggests there may be some benefits to it. In a study, published in the journal Psychological Science, researchers found that people may be looking to improve another person’s long-term well-being by inducing negative emotion in the present moment. “We have shown that people can be 'cruel to be kind’--that is, they may decide to make someone feel worse if this emotion is beneficial for that other person, even if this does not entail any personal benefit for them,” study author Belén López-Pérez said in a statement. “These results expand our knowledge of the motivations underlying emotion regulation between people.” Past research has showed people who emotionally manipulate others do it for their own personal benefit. But in a new study, researchers were interested in examining altruistic behavior. They imagined it happening in everyday scenarios. “For instance, inducing fear of failure in a loved one who is procrastinating instead of studying for an exam,” López-Pérez said. The researchers hypothesized that the altruistic effect would happen when three conditions were met: the person making the other one feel bad has empathic concern for them; the negative emotion aids to help the target achieve their goal; and there’s no benefit for the person inducing the emotion. To test this hypothesis, 140 adults played a computer-based video game with an anonymous partner called Player A. All of the participants received an automated note generated by Player A about their recent breakup and feelings of helplessness. Some of the study subjects were asked to empathize with Player A, while others were told to stay detached. They were then assigned to play one of two games. The first game, Soldier of Fortune, involved killing as many enemies as possible. The second game, Escape Dead Island, involved trying to escape from zombies. After playing the game, they listened to music and read game descriptions. They then rated, on a 1-7 scale, if they wanted their partner to listen to the clips or read the descriptions, which evoked various emotions. Additionally, they rated how they wanted their partner to feel and if it would be useful in achieving the game’s goal. The findings revealed that study participants chose to induce specific emotions in their partner depending on which of the two games they played. For example, during the zombie game, players chose fearful music for their partner to listen to, in order to help them win the game. “These findings shed light on social dynamics, helping us to understand, for instance, why we sometimes may try to make our loved ones feel bad if we perceive this emotion to be useful to achieve a goal,” López-Pérez said. CLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARTHIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 7First successful ascent of Mt. McKinley - 1913 On this day in 1913, Hudson Stuck, an Alaskan missionary, leads the first successful ascent of Mt. McKinley, the highest point on the American continent at 20,320 feet. Stuck, an accomplished amateur mountaineer, was born in London in 1863. After moving to the United States, in 1905 he became archdeacon of the Episcopal Church in Yukon, Alaska, where he was an admirer of Native Indian culture and traveled Alaska’s difficult terrain to preach to villagers and establish schools. In March 1913, the adventure-seeking Stuck set out from Fairbanks for Mt. McKinley with three companions, Harry Karstens, co-leader of the expedition, Walter Harper, whose mother was a Native Indian, and Robert Tatum, a theology student. Their arduous journey was made more challenging by difficult weather and a fire at one of their camps, which destroyed food and supplies. However, the group persevered and on June 7, Harper, followed by the rest of the party, was the first person to set foot on McKinley’s south peak, considered the mountain’s true summit. (In 1910, a group of climbers had reached the lower north peak.) Stuck referred to the mountain by its Athabascan Indian name, Denali, meaning “The High One.” In 1889, the mountain, over half of which is covered with permanent snowfields, was dubbed Densmores Peak, after a prospector named Frank Densmore. In 1896, it was renamed in honor of Senator William McKinley, who became president that year. Mount McKinley National Park was established as a wildlife refuge in 1917. Harry Karstens served as the park’s first superintendent. In 1980, the park was expanded and renamed Denali National Park and Preserve. Encompassing 6 million acres, the park is larger than Massachusetts. Hudson Stuck died in Alaska on October 10, 1920. Today, over 1,000 hopeful climbers attempt to scale Mt. McKinley each year, with about half of them successfully reaching their goal. In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to hontzc@bangorsd.org

They have sung in the past years at East Stroudsburg Borough's Harvest Fest, Big Brother/Big Sister Telethon, Pocono Medical Center's Tree Lighting, Stroud Mall, Lackawanna Train Ride Excursions, PTA events, and Pancake Day. Join them on this musical journey where they always end up "Home"! Linda Kolbek is the artist for the evening. Her art is derivative to the work of Joan Miro and the "cartoon'ish" styles of Sally Cruikshank. It could be described as a "abstract cartoon". Her primary use of media is acrylic on canvas, and the themes range from the whimsical to the strange spiritual world of the unknown. She enjoy play on words, and this is also another reoccurring theme found in the structure of her work. Most of her influence is based on personal experiences that have happened in her life. The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.
