Marilyn Monroe born - 1926
Norma Jeane Mortenson–who will become better known around the world as the glamorous actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe–is born on this day in 1926, in Los Angeles, California. She was later given her mother’s name, and baptized Norma Jeane Baker.
After a tumultuous childhood–both maternal grandparents and her mother were committed to mental institutions, and she lived with a string of foster families–Norma Jeane married one of her neighbors, James Dougherty, when she was 16. He later joined the Merchant Marines and was sent to the South Pacific during World War II. A photographer “discovered” the naturally photogenic Norma Jeane while she was working in a California munitions factory, and she was soon launched into a successful modeling career. She divorced Dougherty in June 1946 and soon after signed a film contract with 20th Century Fox.
At the outset of her acting career, Norma Jeane dyed her brown hair blonde and changed her name again, calling herself Marilyn Monroe (Monroe was her grandmother’s last name). After a bit part in 1947’s The Shocking Miss Pilgrim, she had a string of forgettable roles before landing a spot in John Huston’s thriller The Asphalt Jungle (1950). That same year, she also drew attention for her work in All About Eve, starring Bette Davis. Her true breakout performance, however, came in Niagara (1953), a thriller in which Monroe played an adulterous young wife who plots with her lover to kill her husband.
After starring turns in Gentleman Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire–both also released in 1953–Monroe was at the top of Hollywood’s A-list. In January 1954, she married baseball great Joe DiMaggio at San Francisco’s City Hall after a two-year romance. Though the press hailed their relationship as the quintessential All-American love affair, trouble began brewing almost immediately. DiMaggio was notoriously uncomfortable with his new wife’s sexy public image, and her wild popularity, as evidenced by the near-riot among U.S. servicemen stationed in Korea during a performance she gave in the middle of the couple’s honeymoon. They would divorce that October, after only nine months of marriage, but remained good friends. (After Monroe’s death, DiMaggio famously sent roses to her grave several times a week for more than three decades, until his own death in 1999.)
Monroe attempted to switch to more serious acting roles, studying at the prestigious Actors’ Studio in New York. She earned positive reviews for her more nuanced work in Bus Stop (1956), The Prince and the Showgirl (1957) and particularly Some Like It Hot (1959). By 1961, however, trouble in Monroe’s personal life–her third marriage, to the acclaimed playwright Arthur Miller, dissolved after four years–had led to her increasing emotional fragility, and that year she was admitted on two occasions to hospitals for psychiatric observation and rest. Her final film was The Misfits (1961), written by Miller and co-starring Montgomery Clift and Clark Gable (it would also be Gable’s final appearance on-screen.) In June 1962, Fox dismissed the actress after repeated and extended absences from the set of Something’s Got to Give. On August 5, 1962, Monroe was found dead from an overdose of barbiturates in her home in Brentwood, California. She was 36 years old.

(UPI) -- Cambridge University in England hired a "Lego professor of play" to teach and research the role of play in young children.

(BPT) - Is it ever too early to think about aging in place, and making home improvements that will allow you to remain living in the same house well into your golden years? Homeowners in their 60s and 70s are no longer the only Americans investing thought and money into preparing their homes to meet their needs as they grow older — and that’s good news, according to HomeAdvisor’s 2016 Aging-in-Place report.
“If homeowners start early, they can spend sufficient time researching and planning to avoid wasted time and suboptimal solutions,” Brad Hunter, HomeAdvisor’s chief economist, says in the report. “Homeowners can protect, and possibly even raise, resale value of the home by making (it) more appealing to buyers in all age groups with modifications that have broad appeal.” The report notes universal design improvements, such as wider doorways and open floor plans, “can enhance the quality of life in a home even as they make the home safer ... and can be just as beneficial to a homeowner in their 30s or 40s as they are to a homeowner in their 70s or 80s.” Universally beneficial upgrades Incorporating universal design principles into your home can facilitate aging-in-place goals, while comfortably addressing the diverse needs of all ages and mobility levels using your home. Features like single-story design, bedrooms and bathrooms on the ground floor, daylighting through larger windows and skylights, and wider doors and hallways appeal to users of all ages. However, if you’re considering aging-in-place upgrades, making improvements in the bathroom can deliver the greatest return on your investment. The bathroom is often referred to as the most dangerous room in the home for all ages, but especially for seniors with increased risk of falling in showers or bathtubs, or around the toilet area. Upgrades to improve a bathroom’s usability and safety can help people remain in their homes for longer. Here are bathroom improvements to consider: * Replace a step-in bathtub with a walk-in option — Falls send thousands of older people to the emergency room each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Slate Belt Futures exhibit
Slate Belt Futures exhibit will be on display at the Slate Belt Heritage Center, May 14 to June 4th. Design students from the University of Pennsylvania visited the Slate Belt during the fall semester of 2016 and completed projects that re-purpose former industrial sites for future use. The plans show many parts of the Slate Belt and consider safe and innovative uses for familiar places. The sites include quarries, flood plains, fens, railroad beds, and other areas in Slate Belt municipalities.

Slate Belt Futures exhibit will be on display at the Slate Belt Heritage Center, May 14 to June 4th. Design students from the University of Pennsylvania visited the Slate Belt during the fall semester of 2016 and completed projects that re-purpose former industrial sites for future use. The plans show many parts of the Slate Belt and consider safe and innovative uses for familiar places. The sites include quarries, flood plains, fens, railroad beds, and other areas in Slate Belt municipalities.

1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.

With a BFA, she worked as designer in the corporate art departments of Hess’s Department Store, Finance America, a Bank America subsidiary, and Blue Cross of RI., and then as a toy and package designer for Hasbro Toys in New England, specializing in My Little Pony packaging and play-sets.

Chandler Estates to hold Rummage Sale
A rummage sale will be held at Chandler Estates, 1569 Teels Road, Pen Argyl on Saturday,

Plainfield Changes Synagro Meeting Time
Notice is hereby given pursuant to Section 709 of the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act that the Plainfield Township Planning Commission will hold a rescheduled regular meeting on Monday, June 12, 2017, at 7:00 P.M. prevailing local time until 10:30 P.M. prevailing local time at the Wind Gap Middle School located at 1620 Teels Road, Pen Argyl, PA 18072.
The meeting will be held in the Russell H. Roper Auditorium. This meeting replaces the previously advertised regular meeting originally scheduled for Monday, June 19, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. Notice is hereby given pursuant to Section 709 of the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act that the Plainfield Township Planning Commission will hold a rescheduled regular meeting on Monday, June 12, 2017, at 7:00 P.M. prevailing local time until 10:30 P.M. prevailing local time at the Wind Gap Middle School located at 1620 Teels Road, Pen Argyl, PA 18072.

The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit.
As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife.
Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.
