Breathing Could be Life Changing
We’ve been breathing since the day we were born. Why the heck would we need more practice at it? But the ancient technique of breathwork is having a moment—celebs like Gisele Bündchen and Christy Turlington swear by it, and it has some serious mood-enhancing and body-boosting benefits. Here’s what you need to know before you try it.
Wait, what exactly is breathwork? Practitioner Debbie Attias from New York's Maha Rose Center for Healing is breaking it down for us. She describes it as “an active meditation where we alter the breath to reach deeper states of consciousness and awareness.” Ooo, so new-agey. Breathwork can take many forms, but the basic principle is to use breath awareness and exercises to boost your physical, mental and spiritual health. Why the sudden interest? The celebrity attention (hey Gisele), definitely doesn’t hurt. But our hunch is it’s because we’re all super stressed right now. New York City breathwork teacher Erin Telford agrees. “People are seeking inner peace,” she says. “And breathwork is one way to do that that's efficient and effective.” So how do you do it? You can practice breathwork in a group, one-on-one with a practitioner, or at home by yourself. Sessions often last for hours and usually involve lying down on a yoga mat and breathing in a highly controlled (and not always comfortable) fashion. Experiences vary, but many people say it can get pretty intense—think visions, life-changing revelations and outpourings of emotion. Telford was working as an acupuncturist and Reiki master for years before she tried it and says that it was one of the most powerful healing experiences of her life. “It gave me an outlet for all of the repressed anger, resentment, grief and sadness that was in my body.” Whoa, sounds cathartic. Any other health benefits?One group of Danish researchers found that breathwork noticeably improved the mood of participants, while another study published in the Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy suggested that it might be helpful in treating anxiety and depression. And according to expert Dan Brulé (who counts Navy SEALS, Olympians and Tony Robbins as clients) mastering your breath might give you a leg-up in your career. “Sometimes all it takes is a slight tweak of the breath to open up all kinds of new levels of abilities, skills and possibilities,” he says. Sign me up. Where can I try it? Check with your local meditation or yoga center for group sessions, or do a quick Google to find a private practitioner. Looking for a quick fix? Breathe Sit or lie down comfortably. Close your eyes. Focus on your breath at your nostrils or in your chest, and count 12 to 15 long breaths. See As you count another set of 12 to 15 breaths, visualize yourself somewhere pleasant and safe: the beach, on a hike, perhaps with a loved one. Say In another set of breaths, use your inner voice to remind yourself that life is a gift, and that you are thankful to learn new things. In a final set of breaths, tell yourself that a positive mental outlook is the most practical way to overcome obstacles.

1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants. BMCL Nature Adventure The Blue Mt. Community Library will offer a new program this summer for children. The library will partner with Waste Management for NATURE ADVENTURE! Children entering Kindergarten through 3rd Grade are encouraged to attend this program for Storytime and outdoor activities and should dress to explore! The 3 programs will be held at 10:00 am at the WM Environmental Center, 891 Grand Central Road, Pen Argyl: June 14 (Pollinators), July 12 (Landfill Trucks and More!) and August 9 (Bluebirds and Tree Swallows). The BMCL announces a special summer reading program called HIGH FIVE YOUR READING DRIVE! The program runs June 12 through August 12. Children entering Kindergarten through 8th Grade are encouraged to read at least 5 Library books and keep a log of their titles to earn one free book of their choosing from the Book Nook. The reading logs and information will be available at the front desk. Children 18 and under who do not have a library membership can open one, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The library is now automated and new library cards will be issued to replace old cards and you MUST have a PA driver’s license or ID with you to open a membership. Visitors coming to the farm for the historic tour will experience guides portraying family members going about a typical day on a homestead in the 1800s. In addition to the tour, folks will have a chance to involve themselves in a variety of garden-related activities. Tour a typical Pennsylvania German kitchen garden, get help with garden basics, sample yummy things made with fresh herbs and vegetables and take home some recipes. At the outdoor brick oven herb breads will be baked and samples shared. This year’s feature area, Outdoor Living Space will have an example of a comfortable gathering place for families looking for some fresh air and relaxation at home, complete with a Zen gravel bed. There will be new adventures at the party including two Food Demonstrations, Dutch Oven Cooking with Fresh Herbs and Easy Herb Cheese Making. Older youth and adults will enjoy making birds using wire and paper as well as quilled flower mobiles. The Children’s Area will have lots of summer craft fun with insect creatures, 3D flower cards and bubble pictures. Visitors are welcome to hang some artwork from the tree featured in the theme area. This is a day full of gardening inspiration, artistic expression and fun in the outdoors. This event is sponsored in part by a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Project Stream grant. All activities on June 17 are rain or shine and are subject to change.
