CLICK HERE TO READ THE MONROE DAILY NEWSATTENTION SLATE BELTDear Fellow Slate Belt Residents, Again, we ask our community to pull together. This time it's not to help build a YMCA but to stop the building of a Sludge Treatment Facility next to the Waste Management landfill in Plainfield Township. We urge as many citizens as possible to find all the information given to us through sludgefree.umbt on Facebook, John Reinhart’s January 17th letter in the Express Times, and the facebook Sludge Free Slate Belt flyers. This information will get you up to speed quickly. We urge you to contact the representatives of the Green Knight Economic Development group at [email protected] and the Plainfield Township Board of Supervisors and the Plainfield Township Zoning Board at twp.plainfield.pa .us. Contacting individual board members would be helpful. Anyone you know in these organizations should be contacted and your attendance at their meetings would be great. The future of our families and neighborhoods are at stake. We will be there in opposition with you. Slaters Rally Again, Advance to Quarterfinalsby Larry Cory
If Bangor High School athletics kept stats for resilience, the 2017 Slater softball team would rank near the top. Just a few weeks ago, the Slaters rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Northwestern 8-7 and then followed that two days later by coming from an 11-6 deficit in the sixth inning to beat Salisbury 12-11 for the league title. Today, Bangor (24-1) was on the short end of a 4-0 game versus Wyoming Area in the opening of the State AAAA tourney, but rallied again for a 9-4 win to advance to the state quarterfinals versus Upper Perkioman Thursday at a site and time TBD. The Warriors took a 3-0 lead with no outs in the top of the first on a three-run homer when freshman Dani Hess came on in relief to get three outs with no further damage. Hess allowed another run in the second, but thanks to some solid pitching and great defense, Bangor did not allow another run the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Slaters' offense began to make a dent in Wyoming's advantage. After catcher Kaitlyn Caleen fired a bullet to Dani Fey first to pick off a runner and end the second inning, Bangor's Niki Kessler doubled to open the bottom of the inning. She went to third on Lexi Kessler's sacrifice bunt and scored on a infield hit by Ciarrah Holmqvist , cutting the Warrior lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the third, Dani Hess singled, Lexi Kessler and Dani Fey reached on walks to load the bases. Caleen then hit a fly ball to short right that dropped in for a single which drove in two runs, bringing the Slaters within one run at 4-3. In the fourth inning, singles by Hannah England and Dani Hess and a fielder's choice tied the game at 4-4 and Holmqvist delivered a sacrifice fly to put the Slaters up 5-4. In the sixth, Nikki Kessler singled and Lexi Kessler beat out a bunt to put runners on first and second. Holmqvist sacrficed the runners to second and third. Wyoming then elected to intentionally walk Fey to load the bases. However, Caleen followed with with a sharp single plating two runs for a 7-4 lead. Jackie Hess then singled home two more runs as Bangor took command with a 9-4 lead. Understanding How Boys Play(NAPSI)—You may have seen it at home, in the classroom, on the playground and around the sports field: boys carrying on the way boys do. If someone gets roughed up, he may be told to “man up,” or if feelings get hurt, to “let it go.”
Although numerous studies show that strong relationships and the ability to connect are key to happiness, health and even career success, boys grow up with cultural messages telling them feelings and relationships make them weak. For generations, boys have been pumped with messages that encourage stepping away from their feelings. They’re urged to mask their emotions with bravery and toughness and it’s reinforced in the toys targeted to them. Trucks, action figures, building sets and the like don’t much contribute to developing emotional intelligence or teaching compassion and empathy. In the girls’ toy aisle, the opposite is true. Almost all toys targeted to girls focus on creativity, friendship and nurturing. Now, a psychotherapist and mother of a son, Laurel Wider, has come up with a way to change how boys connect during play. When her son returned home from preschool and declared that “boys aren’t supposed to cry,” she realized that even though she encouraged her son to express his feelings, it was quite evident that influences outside the home were sending the “man up” message. The same directive was also broadcast—loud and clear—in the toy aisle. Wider decided to use her experience and expertise to create a different play option for boys—one that would focus on building social and emotional skills. “In efforts to bring friendship and empathy to boys’ play, I knew I had to find a way to cut through the stigma and that’s when it hit me: There’s no reason why a superhero or builder can’t also be a nurturer.” In response, Wider created a line called Wonder Crew Buddies, designed for boys ages 3 to 5. The 15” buddies combine the adventure of an action figure with the emotional connection of a stuffed animal. The four pals, Will, Marco, James and Erik, can empower boys to develop emotionally through friendship, imagination and adventure. Each 15-inch figure comes friendship- and adventure-ready, dressed in superhero gear, complete with matching mask and cape for kids. When children suit up along with their buddies, this not only adds to the crewlike vibe, but deepens the imaginative play experience. Boys can partake in both adventurous and imaginative play, while having meaningful conversations and sharing feelings with their buddies. The diversity among the dolls is a huge plus, bolstering the confidence, self-worth and empowerment in all boys. As Dr. Shawn Meghan Burn, Professor of Psychology at CaliforniaPolytechnic State University, put it, “Children need toys that will prepare them for active roles in both the home and workplace, that promote a wide variety of skills, and that help them develop their own unique aptitudes and skills rather than only those that conform to traditional gender stereotypes.” In partnership with PlayMonster, the Buddies are available now where toys are sold Faith Christian Graduation.......These seniors play music during Faith Christian School graduation ceremonies held Friday night at Slate Belt Baptist Church in Wind Gap. New Immunization Requirements for PA Schools
The Pennsylvania Department of Health has revised Pennsylvania’s school immunization requirements for the 2017-18 school year. The new rules require parents to get their children fully immunized prior to the fifth day of school or the students will be excluded from school. Previously, parents had eight months to meet school immunization requirements. If a student is in the middle of an immunization series and it is too soon for the next dose, the parents must provide the school nurse with a written plan, signed by their health care provider, within the first five days of school. For more information, contact your health care provider, visit www.health.pa.gov or call 1-877-PA-HEALTH. CLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARTHIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 5FDR takes U.S. off gold standard - 1933 On June 5, 1933, the United States went off the gold standard, a monetary system in which currency is backed by gold, when Congress enacted a joint resolution nullifying the right of creditors to demand payment in gold. The United States had been on a gold standard since 1879, except for an embargo on gold exports during World War I, but bank failures during the Great Depression of the 1930s frightened the public into hoarding gold, making the policy untenable. Soon after taking office in March 1933, Roosevelt declared a nationwide bank moratorium in order to prevent a run on the banks by consumers lacking confidence in the economy. He also forbade banks to pay out gold or to export it. According to Keynesian economic theory, one of the best ways to fight off an economic downturn is to inflate the money supply. And increasing the amount of gold held by the Federal Reserve would in turn increase its power to inflate the money supply. Facing similar pressures, Britain had dropped the gold standard in 1931, and Roosevelt had taken note. On April 5, 1933, Roosevelt ordered all gold coins and gold certificates in denominations of more than $100 turned in for other money. It required all persons to deliver all gold coin, gold bullion and gold certificates owned by them to the Federal Reserve by May 1 for the set price of $20.67 per ounce. By May 10, the government had taken in $300 million of gold coin and $470 million of gold certificates. Two months later, a joint resolution of Congress abrogated the gold clauses in many public and private obligations that required the debtor to repay the creditor in gold dollars of the same weight and fineness as those borrowed. In 1934, the government price of gold was increased to $35 per ounce, effectively increasing the gold on the Federal Reserve’s balance sheets by 69 percent. This increase in assets allowed the Federal Reserve to further inflate the money supply. The government held the $35 per ounce price until August 15, 1971, when President Richard Nixon announced that the United States would no longer convert dollars to gold at a fixed value, thus completely abandoning the gold standard. In 1974, President Gerald Ford signed legislation that permitted Americans again to own gold bullion. Bald Eagle Nest Cam in Hanover, PA - Live

In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to [email protected]

The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.
