Drought Warning In Effect Northampton, Carbon, Lehigh and Monroe counties are now under a drought warning. Residents and businesses, particularly in central and eastern counties, should use water wisely and follow simple water conservation tips to ease the demand for water. Citizens are encouraged to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10-15 percent.
Data from the Commonwealth drought monitoring network shows dry conditions persisting in the middle of the state and lack of precipitation in the eastern part of the state have deepened precipitation deficits, resulting in extremely low stream flow and groundwater levels, particularly in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas in the Delaware River Basin. The Department of Environmental Protection encourages all citizens to take these steps to reduce their water use:

Ex-Pius Student’s Dog Aids Deaf Teacher

It’s amazing to realize the huge impact just one dog can have on so many people. Take the case of Leonardo, a service dog trained by Natalie Martino and her parents Linette and David of Saylorsburg. When Natalie was a junior at Pius X high school (2014-15) she chose to raise a service dog for her junior-year project. Enter Leonardo, born late in 2014 in California and joining the Martino family two months later, a continent away. See: www.sbtopics.com/home---march-22.html The dog came from Canine Companions for Independence which breed Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers and a cross of the two for assistance dogs. CCI service dogs are valued at more than $50,000 and are placed with people with disabilities free of charge. When Pius X closed its doors in June, 2015, Natalie transferred to Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg, graduated and enrolled at Penn State to study speech therapy. Leonardo, meanwhile, finished his year-long training, went back to California and was assigned to work with Patty, who recently became deaf and is a special education teacher. Leonardo, who once walked the halls of a school in Pennsylvania, now walks the halls of another school, this one in California. There he assists Patty with her chores as a teacher. He has learned many commands. For example, he amazes Patty’s students when someone knocks on the classroom door he rubs his nose on Patty’s leg and leads her to the door. If there is a fire drill he is at the ready to help Patty lead the children out of the room. Leonardo is conditioned to recognize sounds and act as Patty’s ears, much like a guide dog acts as its owner’s eyes. Guide dogs can also perform incredible tasks like “Thunder Dog” who derived his nickname from his fear of thunder, but led his blind owner down the steps of the world trade center from the 78th floor to safety in 2001 during 9-11. While the Martinos are not seeking to train another thunder dog they are committed to training another service dog. In fact, they got another puppy the day Leonardo left for California. Even David, who in the beginning was a bit skeptical about training service dogs, is now all in on the next one. Linette recently flew to California and had a “very happy reunion” with Leonardo. Natalie hopes to do the same as time permits.

Good News for Pennsylvanians
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has signed into law legislation that will allow Pennsylvania and New Jersey residents to pay income tax where they live, regardless of where they work. His decision keeps in place the Reciprocal Personal Income Tax Agreement, which was reached in 1977. Pennsylvania’s Personal Income Tax rate is 3.07 percent, while New Jersey’s tax rate ranges from 1.4 percent for those earning $20,000 or less to 8.97 percent for those earning at least $500,000. An estimated 250,000 Pennsylvania and New Jersey residents commute across the Delaware River for work. ORANGEBURG, S.C., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- A 55-year-old South Carolina State University student rushed the football for three yards to become the oldest-ever Division 1 collegiate football player.
Joe Thomas Sr., 55, father of Green Bay Packers player Joe Thomas Jr., was cleared to play by the NCAA last week, but didn't make it onto the field until Saturday, when he rushed the ball for three yards against Savannah State in the first play of the second quarter. Thomas is now believed to be the oldest player to participate in a Division I football game, officials said. "Happiest day of my life," said Thomas told WACH-TV. "Something I've always wanted to do was play college football, and I got to do that today." Thomas took to the field again in the fourth quarter to rush three more times, helping the team come out victorious, 32-0. "Never give up on your dream," Thomas said. "I've been waiting 36 years...thank God it happened today." .

This most recent work is a series of plein-air paintings using an impasto of marble dust and oil to capture the fresh and raw nature of flowers, with surface effects that encompass both abstraction and realism. Forks Tree of Lights Forks YMCA Education Center Hosts Third Annual Tree of Lights Celebration is where individuals of all ages will gather to honor and remember those who make our neighborhoods and lives a better place. The event will feature a tree lighting, seasonal songs sung by the center’s children, the Easton Area High School’s Brass Ensemble, Frosty the Snowman and the arrival of Santa Claus.
The event will be held Wednesday, December 7, 2016, 7 PM – 8 PM at Park Plaza, 1800 Sullivan Trail, Easton, PA.x Library Night at Wendy’s The Blue Mountain Community Library will be holding a “Library Night at Wendy’s” Fundraiser on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Wendy’s Restaurant, route 512, Wind Gap, PA will generously donate a portion of all sales that night to the Library in Pen Argyl. The fundraiser will include dine-in, take-out and drive-through orders. Please consider supporting the Blue Mountain Community Library by purchasing a meal from Wendy’s. The money will be used to purchase new books and to meet the many expenses associated with maintaining the building. Membership to the library is free to all residents of the Pen Argyl School District and non-residents may join for a small yearly fee.
A Christmas Tree Fundraiser is currently being offered at the library for anyone wishing to honor or memorialize a loved one or pet. Please consider purchasing an ornament for $5.00 to decorate the tree. The library has many Pen Argyl High School yearbooks for sale, as well as books on local history. December 9Celebrate Christmas In Historic Downtown Bangor Downtown Historic Bangor holiday festivities start Friday, December 9 from 2-7 PM with live reindeer on Broadway next to Merchants Bank from 2- 7 pm, Participating businesses will be open until 8. Santa will be at Merchants Bank on Broadway from 3-6 pm. Music at the First UE Church on South Second Street will include the Slate Belt Cantata Choir of Grace United Methodist Church in Pen Argyl singing 4:45 to 5:15 and the Chime Choir of First UE singing from 5:30 - 6:00. The Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church will be caroling in downtown Bangor from 6:00 to 7:00pm. There will also be a drawing for prizes at the end of the evening.
More festivities on Saturday December 10 include the Heritage Center which will be open from 11-3 pm where Perry Morris will be telling old-fashioned Christmas stories. Music at The Broadway Pub from 12-2 pm will feature Jimmy Hummel and Lorri Woodward. Santa will be at Grace on Broadway from 11-2 pm. . A prize drawing will be held at 3 pm. Slate Belt Girl Scouts will be decorating the meters downtown. The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will be decorating windows of businesses who choose to have non-profit do their decorating. Community Christmas Cantata A Community Christmas Cantata, ”Sing Alleluia! Christ Is Born!,” will be presented on Sunday, December 11 at 3:00 pm in the Sanctuary at Grace United Methodist Church, located at 404 East Mountain Ave. in Pen Argyl, PA.
The choir is composed of singers from various churches in the Slate Belt Area and will be directed by Mr. Walter Cole, senior choir director at Grace UMC and accompanied by Mr. William Stine. Bangor High School Bands Winter Concert The BAHS Bands Winter Concert will be held on Friday, December 16 at 7:30 PM in the M. Craig Paine Performing Arts Theater at Bangor Area High School. The Concert and Symphonic Bands will each present their own portion of the concert with compositions by Steve Reisteter, James Barnes, Chris Bernotas, James Curnow, Pavel Tschesnokoff, and John Moss.
At the conclusion of the program, both groups will unite on stage for a grand finale complete with a Christmas Carol sing-along and our annual performance of Sleigh Ride conducted by a jolly special guest. Tickets will be available at the door for $3 adults/$2 students and seniors. Gold Cards and Slater Band Boosters Membership Cards will be honored.
