Book Review.......Circling the Sun by Paula McLain
review by Judy Piper If you enjoyed The Paris Wife (about a wife of Ernest Hemingway) by McLain, then you will probably enjoy this historical fiction novel about Beryl Chitterbuck. All the characters and the events are real. In 1904, Beryl at the age of two leaves England with her family to go to Kenya and live on a farm. After two years, her mother takes her older brother and moves back to London. Her father becomes a horse trainer and Beryl helps him. Her one true friend is Kibu, an African boy. As time passes, her father brings Emma into the household to take care of Beryl. Eventually, she marries her father. By the time Beryl is sixteen, her father has to leave the farm and encourages Beryl to marry a man twice her age. This will be her first of three marriages. Beryl and her husband Jack soon live separate lives. In 1925, she becomes the first girl horse trainer and meets Denys Finch Hatton, the great love of her life. As a scandal ensues, Beryl goes to London. The author continues with the events in Beryl’s life in London and back to Africa. Beryl eventually learns to fly and in 1936 becomes the first woman to fly solo from England to the United States. At the age of 83, in 1986, Beryl dies. |

Customized Knee Implants Help Patients
Seventy-two-year-old Ohio resident Tedd Boomershine went from running daily to having trouble walking and completing day to day tasks. When the pain became so severe it was debilitating, he decided to look into replacement surgery for both of his knees. His doctor told him about his options, including a customized implant from ConforMIS, Inc. called iTotal(R) that is now available for total knee replacements. He liked the idea that the implant would be specifically designed to fit his anatomy based on a CT scan of his knees.
"I had no second thoughts about surgery at all. I wanted to get back to my active lifestyle and enjoy my evening walks with my dog, Stella, again," says Boomershine. "Two weeks after my bilateral surgery with the ConforMIS customized knees, I was walking without the assistance of a cane or a walker and I was able to drive. Now after eight months, my knees are pain free and have total flexibility, my legs are straighter, my stride is better and I no longer have lower back pain. The best part is that I have been able to resume my evening walks with Stella."
Seven weeks after surgery Boomershine was able to walk to his fitness center, ride the bike and do weight machines and then walk back home, a total of three miles daily. Dr. Dan Dunaway, of Far Oaks Orthopedists in Dayton, Ohio reports that Boomershine's recovery is similar to other iTotal recoveries he has seen.
"Tedd has had an outstanding recovery, which is something we are now regularly seeing for patients who have both total and partial knee replacements with ConforMIS customized implants. Patients are able to get back to their normal routines much faster and with less pain. With an implant that is designed to fit that patient, the surgery often involves less blood loss and we can retain more of the patient's natural knee. This is a major advance in knee replacement surgery," says Dunaway.
Dunaway suggests that all patients ask their surgeon some important questions before making a decision about knee surgery:
* Is a customized knee implant that is designed based on my own anatomy an option for me?
* Could a customized knee mean less pain and a faster recovery?
* Will I be able to enjoy an active lifestyle again?

Nearly 1 in 5 say they have seen a ghost
The survey, published in late 2009, reveals 18 percent of Americans say they have come nearly face-to-face with a ghost. The number of those who believe they have been in the presence of an apparition doubled since a similar poll 13 years prior. In 1996, only 9 percent of Americans said they had seen a ghost.
Of just over 2,000 sample survey participants, 29 percent said they have at least been in touch with the dead through feeling or other sensation. The total reportcomes from two surveys consisting of about 4,000 American adults.
Dr. Alice Gregory from Goldsmiths University suggests such sightings or experiences have a more solid explanation. Factors such as sleep -- especially a condition called sleep paralysis -- can make a person believe they are in the presence of a ghostly figure.
"Hallucinations may occur during this experience," she said according to a reportpublished on BT.com. "And those suffering from [sleep paralysis] may be unsure whether the hallucination was a dream or not. Features of REM sleep -- this time the dream aspect -- appears to be carrying over into wakefulness."
Another factor able to influence a person's susceptibility to experiencing the supposed paranormal can be underlying religious belief. Professor Claude Fischer of the University of California, Berkley said in a 2013 blog pst "most American adults in the 21st Century say that they believe in life after death and in the devil."
People who attend religious services at least weekly are less likely to say they have seen a ghost (11 percent). Among those who attend less frequently, 23 percent say they have seen a ghost.
Evangelical Protestants are least likely to believe they have experienced paranormal activity with those beyond the grave. However, when broken down, about a third of major demographic groups within the Christian religion (37 percent of black protestants, 35 percent of white Catholics, and 29 percent of white mainline Protestants) say they have been in touch with someone who died. About 31 percent of the religiously unaffiliated report contact with the dead.
Statistics indicate ghost sightings among women are more frequent than those among men. About 33 percent of women report a ghostly experience as opposed to 26 percent of men, Pew says.
In total, the report concludes about 65 percent of adults believe in or report having experienced a supernatural phenomenon like ghost sightings or other spiritual events. The survey is based on about 1,000 telephone interviews with adults conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International.

Ask The Doc........
Technology can be wonderful!
garywilliamsdmd.com
I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing.
Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making.
I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile.
It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry.
Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com.
