Hangovers Cost $249-billion in 2010 WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Those last few rounds at the bar and the resulting hangover costs more than the price of some Advil. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported excessive drinking cost the U.S. economy $249 billion in 2010, largely from reduced workplace productivity and resulting health problems.
Binge drinking -- five or more drinks on one occasion for men or four or more drinks on one occasion for women -- was responsible for 77 percent of the financial toll on the economy. Two of every $5 of costs -- more than $100 billion -- were paid by governments, the CDC said. The 2010 data, the most recent available, is a marked increase from $223.5 billion in 2006. The economic toll from excessive drinking extends to workplace absenteeism, loss of productivity, car crashes, fires, property damage and death. "The increase in the costs of excessive drinking from 2006 to 2010 is concerning, particularly given the severe economic recession that occurred during these years,"said Dr. Robert Brewer, head of CDC's Alcohol Program and one of the study's authors. "Effective prevention strategies can reduce excessive drinking and related costs in states and communities, but they are under used." The CDC said drinking to excess is also responsible for an average of 88,000 deaths each year. Washington, D.C., had the highest cost per person ($1,526 compared to an $807 national average) and New Mexico had the highest cost per drink ($2.77 compared to an $2.05 national average). |

Bear Goes To School
The festivities began at around 7:30 a.m. when a janitor spotted the bear out on the football field, reports the Bozeman Daily Chronicle.
Next, the animal made its way over to the shop area. A handy open garage bay provided an ideal opportunity to enter the school building.
“Sure enough, it was right there in the hallway,” Bozeman High principal Kevin Conwell told the Chronicle.
Conwell added that the incident was his “first ‘bear-in-a-building’ experience” and that it “definitely raised” his blood pressure.
The “skittish” bear wandered down the long hallway, occasionally sniffing around. At one point, the animal attempted to climb onto a locker — perhaps after catching a whiff of some delicious grub inside.
Several students and staffers watched. Some took photos and video with their mobile phones.
“They were being careful,” Conwell assured the Chronicle. “They were keeping a good, safe distance.”
In due course, the bear decided to leave the halls of Bozeman High via one of the doors a staff member had propped open. It ran west, across the campus lawn — but not before leaving a giant bear poop as a parting gift.
“It left us a nice deposit,” Conwell told the local newspaper.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks spokeswoman noted that police then helped the bear find its way well away from the Bozeman High campus. She said state officials hope to monitor the beast if it makes a reappearance.
Driver-Ed Student Crashes into School
The student, a twentysomething woman from another country, was taking her final test before getting her Washington driver’s license when the incident occurred, reports Seattle, Wash. radio station KOMO.
She failed the test.
A police photograph shows the Bellevue 911 Driving School & DOL Testing Center after the wreck. The collision destroyed the entire right half of the plate glass in front of the testing center. The glass door remained intact but the glass part was entirely shattered. Also, the driver just missed a Shasta vending machine.

(BELOW IS A STORY THAT APPEARED IN THIS PAPER AUGUST 4, 2015) Bangor High graduate Karen (Shoemaker) Katchur has published The Secrets of Lake Road (Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Press) . Karen Katchur -- Official Author Website . In her book, Jo has been hiding the truth about her role in her high school boyfriend’s drowning for sixteen years. Every summer, she drops her children off with her mother at the lakeside community where she spent summers growing up, but cannot bear to stay herself; everything about the lake reminds her of the guilt she feels. For her daughter Caroline, however, the lake is a precious world apart; its familiarity and sameness comforts her every year despite the changes in her life outside its bounds. At twelve years old and caught between childhood and adolescence, she longs to win her mother’s love and doesn’t understand why Jo keeps running away. Then seven-year-old Sara Starr goes missing from the community beach. Rescue workers fail to uncover any sign of her—but instead dredge up the bones Jo hoped would never be discovered, shattering the quiet lakeside community’s tranquility. Caroline was one of the last people to see Sara alive on the beach, and feels responsible for her disappearance. She takes it upon herself to figure out what happened to the little girl. As Caroline searches for Sara, she uncovers the secrets her mother has been hiding, unraveling the very foundation of everything she knows about herself and her family in this riveting novel that is impossible to put down and hard to forget. Karen Katchur holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from West Chester University and a Masters of Education degree in Health and Physical Education from East Stroudsburg University. She lives in Eastern Pennsylvania with her husband and two children. She enjoys running and tennis and playing with her flat coat retriever puppy, Tucker and her cat, Carly. Ask The Doc........
Technology can be wonderful!

garywilliamsdmd.com
I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing.
Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making.
I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile.
It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry.
Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com.
