Meet The Candidates - County Council
Scott Parsons
I am a lifelong resident of the Slate Belt area, a graduate of Pen Argyl High School and served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corp. I have comprehensive experience in local government that includes the following: currently serving on Northampton County Council and ten years on Wind Gap Borough Council embracing the position of President for 3 years.
During my past term, I have shown commitment to the voters with my formidable attendance record by attending regular and alternative committee meetings. Researched diversified projects within the county, and engaged with anyone who may have been affected or involved to analyze the situation, project or process that Council votes on to make the best decision on behalf of the voters. I aspire to continue my work with the County in keeping Gracedale moving forward under county supervision. Farmland Preservation and Open Space shall continue and insuring that grants are awarded to the Slate Belt for infrastructure, municipal parks and economic development. Matt Dietz
I am running for County Council because I believe I will make a positive impact on our beloved Northampton County. I am a commercial pilot who worked my way up from baggage handler to Captain and Chief Pilot for LR Services.
These promotions were based on demonstrated strong work ethic, problem identification and resolution skills, and ability to work efficiently and productively with fellow workers and government agencies. I have lived in Northampton County for over 23 years. My wife, Lori, and I live in Wind Gap with our three children. We both volunteer in our community as well teach Sunday School and leaders of our church's youth group. I also serve on the Wind Gap Park Board. As a family man and community participant, I recognize the difficulties that many families across the county are going through and believe I can make a positive difference as a member of County Council. I will work hard using my small business ownership experience to improve the efficiency of Northampton County government. I will be a strong advocate for the people of Northampton County, both listening to and promoting your concerns. I am willing to work to be your voice for constructive change. |

NCC Info Session on Legal Weapon Training Northampton Community College (NCC) will offer a free information session on the Pennsylvania Lethal Weapons Act (235) courses on Sept. 14 at 10:00 a.m. and at 6:00 p.m., at the Fowler Family Southside Center, 511 E. The course provides training for watch guards, security guards, protective patrolmen, and private detectives, who in their course of employment, are required to carry lethal weapons.

Bangor Halloween Parade October 15
The Bangor Elks Halloween Parade will be held on Thursday, October 15th at 7:00pm. This year’s theme is “The Wild Wild West”. Parade participants may register at Brays Newsstand, 36 Broadway, Bangor; Heard’s Meat Market, 501 S. Main Street, Bangor; or the Bangor Public Library. The signup deadline is Saturday, October 10th at 3pm. Late signups will be held at the Bee Hive Community Center on Thursday, October 15th at 5pm.
All parade participants will meet and line up at the Bee Hive Community Center and Merchants Bank, 191 Branch. Group and float participants will be notified a few days before the parade with their line-up information. Candy may be handed out to the children by walking along side your float or group. Please do not throw candy from your float or car! Prizes will be awarded after the parade at the Elks Lodge on Broadway. Hot dogs and drinks will be served. Booster Seat Makes Driver 12 Look Older
FULSHEAR, Texas, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A Texas police department shared a photo of a booster seat allegedly used by a 12-year-old boy to seem older when he took a car for a joyride.
Fulshear Police said in a Facebook post an officer spotted the young driver Oct. 8 and pulled him over before he had traveled very far.
Police said the car belonged to a friend's mother and the boy used the booster seat "to appear older" while behind the wheel.
"If he had only added a fake mustache to go with the booster seat, we may have not noticed," police joked in the Facebook post.
Police said "no one was hurt" during the boy's joyride, but the incident was "scary just the same."
I t was unclear whether the boy was arrested or whether he will face charges stemming from the incident.

Drunk Driver Blames Dog for Driving
ARASOTA, Fla., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A Florida DWI suspect allegedly offered authorities an unusual explanation for his vehicle's erratic movements: "My dog was driving."
The Manatee County Sheriff's Office said a deputy attempted a traffic stop shortly before 8 p.m. Oct. 7 on a white four-door vehicle seek speeding through a neighborhood.
The sheriff's office said the vehicle sped up while attempting a turn and ended up traveling through a ditch on the side of the road. The driver then over-corrected, swerved and ended up going through a ditch on the opposite side of the road before crashing into a house, investigators said.
The suspect, later identified as Reliford Cooper, fled on foot and a K9 unit soon found his t-shirt in front of a church.
A pastor from the church told a deputy that someone was hiding in the facility's bathroom. Churchgoers forced Cooper out, and he was placed under arrest.
"I wasn't driving that car." Cooper allegedly told deputies while he was being handcuffed. "Who was chasing me? You're slow as [expletive]!"
A deputy told Cooper he smelled of alcohol and marijuana, leading him to allegedly offer an explanation for the events.
"My dog was driving that car. I ran because I wanted to. You ain't gonna find no drugs or guns on me," Cooper allegedly said, before vomiting and complaining of a back injury.
Cooper was arrested on charges including DWI with property damage, aggravated fleeing, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and resisting/obstructing an officer without violence. He was taken to Manatee Memorial hospital for examination and later transported to jail.

(BPT) - You've made furniture out of tree stumps and wind chimes from buttons, bottle caps and old tin cans. You are the queen (or king) of Pinterest projects, and you've DIYed your way to decorative splendor with just about every material imaginable. What's left if you want to take your interior and exterior decorating projects up a notch? One word: concrete.
"Concrete is an exciting, creativity-inspiring design material," says Fu-Tung Cheng, a pioneer in the integration of concrete into exterior and interior design applications, from outdoor water features to sculptural countertops. "Hobbyists and do-it-yourself decorators, however, may not realize the full potential of concrete."
Cheng, president of CHENG Concrete, partnered with concrete products maker Sakrete to create a new type of concrete that puts the full creative power of the material in the hands of virtually any DIYer. "Sure, concrete responds to any form you pour it into, but we wanted to create a material that can do that and respond to how you shape it with your hands, tooling or even found objects," Cheng says of the new product, ShapeCrete, which can be poured, rolled, pushed or molded to create custom concrete designs.
"We like to say ShapeCrete 'plays like clay and works like concrete'," says Eric Peterson, president of Sakrete of North America. ShapeCrete won Best Design Material honors during Dwell on Design 2015, an annual exhibit of current and future trends in architecture, interior design and landscaping. More than 32,000 people - including DIY designers and crafters - attended this year's event in Los Angeles.
If you're thinking about trying your hand at concrete design, here are five projects to liven up the interior and exterior of your home:
* Create a doorstop that will make visitors stop and stare. A 3/4-inch piece of Melamine-coated particle board, 2-inch thick piece of insulating foam or Styrofoam, some spray adhesive, a cutting tool and ShapeCrete are all you need to create an eye-catching, one-of-a-kind doorstop. Simply print out or draw the word "STOP" in large, bold letters, transfer to the foam, cut it out to create a mold, and pour the ShapeCrete into the mold.
* Concrete planters can be expensive if you buy them from a home and garden store. Making your own not only saves you money, but allows you to unleash your creativity and make planters in a variety of sizes, shapes and even colors. All you need to start are some plastic planters in the size of your choice. Add water to the concrete powder to achieve a clay-like consistency and press the concrete into the container to create the form. Or, you can create a unique draped planter by rolling out the concrete on a piece of round fabric and then draping the fabric inside a bowl, plastic planter or other container.
* Turn a large, fresh leaf into a one-of-a-kind dish. Simply create a bed of sand on a piece of cardboard or sheet of plastic, cover the sand with a plastic bag to keep the grains from sticking to the leaf, and lay the leaf on top of the plastic with the vein side up. Mix the concrete to a clay-like consistency and begin packing it onto the leaf, starting at the center and working your way out.
During the mixing process, you can add color to the concrete. You'll have 30 to 60 minutes of working time before the concrete begins to harden, and it will cure completely after 24 hours. You can find detailed instructions for these concrete projects and many more online at www.shapecrete.com.

Fire, Volunteer Ambulance Grants
Volunteer ambulance companies and all fire departments can soon apply for the popular Fire Company, Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program for the 2015-16 program year. More than $30 million is available statewide to help these first responders.
Applications are online for fire and ambulance departments to complete. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, Oct. 22. The grants may be used for construction or renovation of a unit’s station, the purchase or repair of equipment, training or debt reduction. October 14Bangor Borough Candidates Night Bangor residents are invited to attend the 2015 Candidates' Night, hosted by the Bangor Block Watch. The event is set for Wednesday, October 14th from 7pm-9pm at the Bee Hive Community Center in Bangor, 197 Pennsylvania Avenue. The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Northampton Community College (NCC) will offer a free information session on the Pennsylvania Lethal Weapons Act (235) courses on Sept. 14 at 10:00 a.m. and at 6:00 p.m., at the Fowler Family Southside Center, 511 E. The course provides training for watch guards, security guards, protective patrolmen, and private detectives, who in their course of employment, are required to carry lethal weapons.

Bangor Halloween Parade October 15
The Bangor Elks Halloween Parade will be held on Thursday, October 15th at 7:00pm. This year’s theme is “The Wild Wild West”. Parade participants may register at Brays Newsstand, 36 Broadway, Bangor; Heard’s Meat Market, 501 S. Main Street, Bangor; or the Bangor Public Library. The signup deadline is Saturday, October 10th at 3pm. Late signups will be held at the Bee Hive Community Center on Thursday, October 15th at 5pm.
All parade participants will meet and line up at the Bee Hive Community Center and Merchants Bank, 191 Branch. Group and float participants will be notified a few days before the parade with their line-up information. Candy may be handed out to the children by walking along side your float or group. For over 100 years, twenty miles of the north side of the Kittatinny Ridge was denuded because of heavy metal and acid rain contamination from the NJ Zinc Company plant in Palmerton. Attempts to remediate that damage were unsuccessful until members of Lehigh Gap Nature Center proposed the use of native grasses to initiate restoration of soils and stabilization of the contaminants. Within a few years the effectiveness of this approach was evident. Now LGNC is the center of active recreation, education, conservation and research activity, almost all of it carried out by volunteers. Registration is required. |

Jacobsburg Historical Society’s annual Market Faire & Rendezvous is traditionally held during the last full weekend of October on the grounds of the Boulton Historic Site, just outside of Nazareth, Pennsylvania. The 2015 event will be open to the public on Saturday, October 24th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday, October 25th from 10:00AM to 3:00PM. Parking is available in the pasture behind the John Joseph Henry House at 402 Henry Road, just off the Belfast Exit on Route 33. Adult admission $5.00 with free on-site parking. Children 12 and under, JHS members, active duty military and scouts are free.
The Market Faire & Rendezvous is family-friendly with a living history encampment representing many periods of American history, including the Pre-Colonial, Colonial, and Fur Trade Eras. Demonstrations and events include primitive archery, blacksmithing, black powder demos, children’s games, a scavenger hunt, a Market Faire of 18th & 19th century traders, and individual blanket traders. Demonstrators of Early American Arts & Crafts will present their skills in leatherwork, hornwork, ropemaking, quillwork, shoemaking, and gunmaking near the Nicholas Hawk Gun Shop. Open hearth cooking demonstrations will also be provided in the Summer Kitchen. Helping Hands 2015 Plans
October 2015 Roseto Helping Hands will be collecting canned goods to make Turkey Boxes for needy families within Roseto. Items can be dropped off at Roseto Borough Hall located at 164 Garibaldi Avenue, Roseto.
October 7, 2015 Roseto Helping Hands will be at Wendy's in Wind Gap from 5pm-8pm. A portion of the nights proceeds will be donated to Roseto Helping Hands. November 15, 2015 Roseto Helping Hands will be hosting "Bring A Friend" Bingo at the American Legion in Roseto. To purchase a ticket, contact Janet Farole at 484-221-0047.
