Bangor Bank Employee on WDIY Board The Lehigh Valley Community Broadcasters Association, licensee and operator of WDIY, recently elected three new members to serve on the Board of Directors for WDIY, Lehigh Valley’s community NPR station.
Officers elected by the board are Judy Parr of Bethlehem (Lehigh University), Dr. Bill Dautremont-Smith of Orefield, and Deborah Carey of Hellertown (Merchants Bank of Bangor). Ms. Parr works as a planned giving officer in Lehigh’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Dr. Dautremont-Smith has previously served as Interim Executive Director of WDIY in 2008 and then Executive Director of the station from 2009 to 2013. He continues to serve as weekly Tuesday host of WDIY’s afternoon eclectic music program, The Blend. Ms. Carey was elected to a two year-term as member representative. She is Vice/President Branch Manager of Merchants Bank of Bangor and involved with several other community organizations in the Lehigh Valley. Ms. Carey has hosted WDIY's Sunday afternoon world music program, World Bop, for the past nine years. WDIY has over 140 volunteers, about 90 of whom host on-air programs. The station's schedule includes national news and entertainment from the NPR network, locally-produced public affairs shows, and a wide range of music, including classical, album-oriented rock, folk, blues, jazz, and world music.

A public concert will be held Saturday, February 25 at 1 PM at Lehigh University Campus in the Zellner Performing Arts Center, 420 E. Packer Ave., Bethlehem, PA. The festival is under the direction of guest conductor, Dr. Bradley Olesen, Director of Choral and Elementary Music for Dallas Independent School District. Dr. Olesen oversees 334 programs at 237 Secondary and Elementary Schools with 160,000 students. The program repertoire includes: “Cantata Domino”, “Travelin’ Home”, “This is My Father’s World“, “Bogoroditse Devo, raduisya”, “Ubi Caritas”, “Jenny Kissed Me”, “Battle of Jericho", and “Flight Song“.

Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area is one of the premier birding spots in eastern Pennsylvania. It is an early spring staging area for up to 100,000 Snow Geese and over 4,000 Tundra Swans. Join us for this birding tour of Middle Creek as we enjoy this spectacle and look for many other species of waterfowl. Both Ross’s and Cackling Geese have been seen on previous trips. We’ll also check the extensive grasslands for raptors like Northern Harriers and Rough-legged Hawks. Bald Eagles are often seen and Golden Eagles are seen occasionally. Leaders will stay until dusk to listen for American Woodcocks and to look for Short-eared Owls. This program is free of charge. Participants should dress for the weather and bring binoculars and a lunch. This is a great opportunity for photographers. Registration is required. In New York City, Malcolm X, an African American nationalist and religious leader, is assassinated by rival Black Muslims while addressing his Organization of Afro-American Unity at the Audubon Ballroom in Washington Heights. After six years, Malcolm was released from prison and became a loyal and effective minister of the Nation of Islam in Harlem, New York. In contrast with civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X advocated self-defense and the liberation of African Americans “by any means necessary.” A fiery orator, Malcolm was admired by the African American community in New York and around the country.
In the early 1960s, he began to develop a more outspoken philosophy than that of Elijah Muhammad, whom he felt did not sufficiently support the civil rights movement. In late 1963, Malcolm’s suggestion that President John F. Kennedy’s assassination was a matter of the “chickens coming home to roost” provided Elijah Muhammad, who believed that Malcolm had become too powerful, with a convenient opportunity to suspend him from the Nation of Islam. A few months later, Malcolm formally left the organization and made a Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, where he was profoundly affected by the lack of racial discord among orthodox Muslims. He returned to America as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and in June 1964 founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity, which advocated black identity and held that racism, not the white race, was the greatest foe of the African American. Malcolm’s new movement steadily gained followers, and his more moderate philosophy became increasingly influential in the civil rights movement, especially among the leaders of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. On February 21, 1965, one week after his home was firebombed, Malcolm X was shot to death by Nation of Islam members while speaking at a rally of his organization in New York City. This hands-on non-credit course is taught by instructors with lineworker experience and has been popular since its inception since 2013. Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family. The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest. Hanover is located in south-central PA about five miles from the Mason-Dixon line. In Case You Missed It......

BAHS Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. After years of normal wear and tear, the uniforms must be replaced. The new uniforms will continue to use the same style.
The Slater Band Boosters have initiated a fund drive to support this effort. The Boosters will appreciate any donations, small or large, to this cause. Pen Argyl, PA – State Senator Mario Scavello will continue his Healthy Living Series in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to offer free Tdap vaccine shots at his Pen Argyl District Office on Thursday, February 23 from 10 AM to 11:30 AM (2 N. Robinson Avenue, Pen Argyl).
The Tdap vaccine shots are available to individuals of all ages who are uninsured or underinsured. This service is not available to anyone with Medicare Part D or insurance that already covers the vaccination.
Tdap is a combination booster vaccine that inoculates against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough).

The play examines urban gentrification through an interracial couple’s relationship as they move to the inner city.

March Madness at Middle Creek

Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area is one of the premier birding spots in eastern Pennsylvania. It is an early spring staging area for up to 100,000 Snow Geese and over 4,000 Tundra Swans. Join us for this birding tour of Middle Creek as we enjoy this spectacle and look for many other species of waterfowl. Both Ross’s and Cackling Geese have been seen on previous trips. We’ll also check the extensive grasslands for raptors like Northern Harriers and Rough-legged Hawks. Bald Eagles are often seen and Golden Eagles are seen occasionally. Leaders will stay until dusk to listen for American Woodcocks and to look for Short-eared Owls. This program is free of charge. Participants should dress for the weather and bring binoculars and a lunch. This is a great opportunity for photographers. Registration is required.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is hosting a hunter training course on Saturday, March 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at East Bath Rod and Gun Club, Township Line Road, Bath. The course is required by law for all first-time hunters and trappers before they can purchase a license.

Please hang a Black Balloon outside of your home or business to show awareness for all the ones we have lost to addiction. This is a sign that you have been affected by drug addiction or an overdose death. It is a sign that we are all in this together!
This is the second annual event, last year it was a huge success with over 40,000

East Bangor UMC Lenten Bible Study
The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church is offering a Lenten Bible Study, "The Seedy Side of Jacob". We all know Jacob, the highly-regarded patriarch of the Israelites. From Jacob came the offspring who became "The Twelve Tribes of Israel," who were the foundation of the Jewish movement. Jacob was, and is, highly revered. He was also human - very human. And in his humanness his quest for power and authority often got in the way of his decision-making process. During Lent, we will take a look at the less-than-admirable side of Jacob in the quest to embrace our own humanity and seek alternatives to accomplishing God's will without resorting to cleverness and self-centeredness.
