Answering in the affirmative is all a scammer needs to execute the latest "can you hear me?" scam. This scam has historically been directed toward businesses, but your Better Business Bureau is hearing from consumers recently who are reporting the phone scam via BBB Scam Tracker. How the scam works: You receive a recorded call from someone who provides an introduction and identifies the business or agency they supposedly represent. Recent scam reports identify the caller as being from a home security agency, a cruise line or associated with social security. After the introduction, the recording will ask if you can hear the caller clearly. If you answer "yes" there's a possibility that the scam artist behind the phone call has recorded you and will use your agreement to sign you up for a product or service and then demand payment. If you refuse, the caller may produce your recorded "yes" response to confirm your purchase agreement. If you receive a similar call: If you receive an unsolicited robocall from an organization or business, just hang up. If you are on the Do Not Call List and a company calls out of the blue to ask questions, it's likely a scam. Avoid responding with "yes, sure or ok." If you are asked a similar question in a phone call or are asked to press a button to be placed on the Do Not Call Registry, just hang up the phone. Saying anything or pressing buttons when prompted may help the scam artists identify that you have an active phone number. Remember that no government agency will ever solicit for the Do Not Call Registry. Write down the phone number of those callers violating the Do Not Call Registry and file a scam report with BBB Scam Tracker and the FTC's Do Not Call List. Remember that Pennsylvania's wiretapping law is a "two-party consent" law, making it a crime to intercept or record a telephone call or conversation unless all parties to the conversation consent.

Elizabeth Becomes Queen - 1952![]() On this day in 1952, after a long illness, King George VI of Great Britain and Northern Ireland dies in his sleep at the royal estate at Sandringham. Princess Elizabeth, the oldest of the king’s two daughters and next in line to succeed him, was in Kenya at the time of her father’s death; she was crowned Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953, at age 27.
Queen Elizabeth, born on April 21, 1926, and known to her family as Lilibet, was groomed as a girl to succeed her father. She married a distant cousin, Philip Mountbatten, on November 20, 1947, at London’s Westminster Abbey. The first of Elizabeth’s four children, Prince Charles, was born in 1948. From the start of her reign, Elizabeth understood the value of public relations and allowed her 1953 coronation to be televised, despite objections from Prime Minister Winston Churchill and others who felt it would cheapen the ceremony. Elizabeth, the 40th British monarch since William the Conqueror, has worked hard at her royal duties and become a popular figure around the world. In 2003, she celebrated 50 years on the throne, only the fifth British monarch to do so. Special Future Events - See BelowCLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARCan You Believe It?Flight bound L.A. forced to land in Arctic![]() (UPI) -- Passengers aboard a Swiss Air flight bound for Los Angeles were close to trading in their sunscreen for snowshoes after the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Arctic Canada.
Swiss Air Flight 40, a Boeing 777, left Zurich with more than 200 passengers and 17 crew this week. The flight path on the direct flight to Los Angeles took the plane over Greenland and the northern part of Canada before turning toward Southern California. When the pilots lost the use of one of the plane's engines, they were forced to make an emergency landing – and the closest airport was in Iqaluit, the capital of Canadian territory of Nunavat, north of Quebec. The plane landed without incident. Initially, airport officials planned to let the passengers get off the plane and spend the night in Iqaluit, allowing for some tourist time, provided anyone was willing to brave the -20 degrees temperature. Ultimately, passengers were kept on board the plane and Swiss Air sent a replacement aircraft from New York, which arrived around 5:30 a.m. the following day and took the passengers to Los Angeles, as planned. Local officials in Iqaluit expressed regret their overnight visitors weren't able to see any of the area, save what was visible out the airplane windows. Parenting...Smart ways parents save time and money with a boss mindset![]() (BPT) - When it comes to parenting, there are as many styles as there are stars in the sky. It doesn't matter if you're a known helicopter parent or you prefer detachment parenting methods, there's one thing everyone can agree on: You want to parent with compassion and confidence.
Every mom knows that managing a family can be a full-time job. Throw in your career and a social life and you might find yourself asking: how do some parents make it look so easy? There's no magic formula, but there are a few strategies that these 'Total Boss Moms' implement to manage those hectic days. Take it from an expert: "Being a total boss mom means juggling a chaotic schedule with ease - like a boss," says Tamera Mowry, actress and host of 'The Real' talk show. "When I'm running a mile a minute, I rely heavily on my smartphone to help me manage my days." Here are five tips for parenting like a total boss that will help you stay organized, cut wasted time and save money: Prep early and often Packing lunches, organizing backpacks, prepping dinner - staying on top of all the day's to-do's can be overwhelming. The best way to reduce stress and stay organized is to do as much as you can early. That means use Sunday night to chop vegetables for the week's lunches and dinners. Pack backpacks and pick out clothes the night before. Finally, parents who get up before their kids have a few moments of silence to shower, read the paper and get a cup of coffee down before the little ones wake. Stay connected to stay in charge Being connected is essential to being a boss. Fortunately, that doesn't require an expensive mobile plan. Starting at $35 a month, Total Wireless offers unlimited talk and text plus 5GB of 4G LTE† data with no contracts or hidden fees. Plus, with nationwide coverage on America's largest and most dependable network, you have confidence you're always connected. Learn more at www.totalwireless.com. Stay organized with a central calendar When parents and kids all have different obligations, it means schedules can get chaotic. Set up a shared electronic calendar that both you and your partner can access to see what the day holds. If possible, use color coding and other sorting tools to designate items for each family member. Then set alarms and always make sure you can access this calendar on your smartphone throughout the day. Use group texts to save time Save time and stay up-to-date by using group texts to communicate quickly with multiple people. "I have a group text with the girls from 'The Real,'" Mowry says. "A busy mom doesn't have a lot of time, so being able to streamline those conversations about work and personal life is a real time-saver. This way everyone is on the same page and we can plan things outside of work easily, too." Stay healthy with the help of your smartphone It can be easy to overlook your own needs between everything you manage, but they're just as important. "I use the fitness apps all the time. As a busy mom, I need to make sure I'm staying healthy," says Mowry. "I can keep track of the calories I'm burning on my phone. I can also make sure all the food items I'm buying at the store are healthy for my family." Health and WellnessSimple Steps to Boost Your Immune System Now![]() (BPT) - Whether it's battling the rampant germs of cold and flu season or maintaining wellness throughout the year, the immune system is your main line of defense. In order to feel good as often as possible - and recover quickly when you don't - it's important to keep your immune system strong.
"The immune system is the part of the body that monitors both internal and external environments," says Dr. Chris Oswald, certified nutrition specialist and chiropractor in Hudson, Wisconsin. "It's important to understand that both too much immune response and too little immune response, including inflammation, is not good, so maintaining that happy medium is the name of the game." To achieve that "happy medium," Dr. Oswald recommends incorporating five simple steps into your daily routine: Support natural sleep cycles "Sleep is the time when our bodies repair and rejuvenate, so it is something to not be taken lightly," Dr. Oswald says. "Generally speaking, the older we are the less sleep we need, but for adults 7-9 hours is usually the sweet spot." He says a good way to know if you are sleeping well is if you fall asleep within 30 minutes of lying down and you are able to wake at approximately the same time every day without an alarm clock. "It is also very important to maintain regular hours as our body's circadian rhythms do not like to be disrupted," he adds. Eat fermented and unprocessed foods Dr. Oswald says the body's microbiome health has a huge impact on the immune system. The microbiome is the collection of microorganisms that inhabit the intestinal tract, creating a mini-ecosystem. "Every bite of food we eat impacts microbiome balance, so it is important to eat foods that promote its health," he says. "I like fermented foods and foods that are minimally processed or as close to their form in nature as possible. When the wrong foods are eaten, certain microbiota are able to 'gain strength' and offset the health promoting benefits of other more beneficial organisms." He adds that dietary fiber is also very important to maintaining the health of the microbiome. Additionally, foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA and EPA help boost the immune system. Use supplements to support digestive health "The digestive tract is a barrier to the outside world which selectively allows molecules to pass through," says Dr. Oswald. This is why a healthy gut is a big part of overall health - it filters out the bad while keeping in the good. Eating plenty of probiotics in foods like yogurt and kefir helps maintain digestive health, but it can be difficult for the average person to get enough to make an impact. "Supporting digestive health with a comprehensive probiotic supplement such as Nordic Naturals Nordic Flora Probiotic Daily is a great foundational health strategy for everyone," Dr. Oswald says. Move your body "Higher levels of fitness are definitely associated with improved immune function," says Dr. Oswald. He recommends high intensity interval training (HIIT), where you alternate short periods of intense exercise with brief rest periods. "I like people to choose any activity they like and have a nice gentle 5 minute warm-up followed by up to six 100 percent work intervals for 30 seconds with 60 seconds of rest," he says. "Once complete with the circuit, a five minute cool down completes your workout in 19 minutes or less." Embrace mindfulness and meditate Dr. Oswald says both acute and chronic stress have an effect on the immune system, which can potentially decrease your resistance to illness. One easy way to combat stress is to try to meditate every day. "Meditation is a very powerful option and I firmly believe that all should find some way of increasing mindfulness," he says. "It is important to remember that meditation is different for everyone." Meditation can be sitting quietly with eyes closed, staring at a flame, walking in the woods, etc. Try something that feels right to you that allows you to relax and be mindful of the present. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club.
