U.S punishes nations for trading w/Cuba- 1964

The United States cuts off military assistance to Britain, France, and Yugoslavia in retaliation for their continuing trade with the communist nation of Cuba. The action was chiefly symbolic, but represented the continued U.S. effort to destabilize the Cuban regime of Fidel Castro.
The amount of aid denied was miniscule–approximately $100,000 in assistance to each nation. None of the nations indicated that the aid cut-off would affect their trade with Cuba in the least. America’s decision to terminate the trade, therefore, hardly had a decisive effect. Many commentators at the time concluded that the U.S. action was largely a result of frustration at not being able to bring down the Castro government.
Since Castro came to power in 1959, the United States had tried various methods to remove him and his communist government. First, the U.S. severed diplomatic relations and enacted a trade embargo. In 1961, it unleashed a force of Cuban exiles (which it had armed, trained, and financed) against Castro in the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion. In 1962, the United States set up a naval blockade around Cuba to prevent the shipment of Soviet missiles to the island. Rumors also flew fast and furious about other U.S. efforts, including talks with the Mafia about assassinating the Cuban leader. Despite all of these efforts, Castro survived and prospered, simply replacing most U.S. trade and aid with the same from the communist bloc. The American obsession with Castro provoked the New York Times to observe that the U.S. policies toward Cuba “suggest an extraordinary sensitivity that does not in fact correspond to basic policy judgments.”

NASA announces winners of 'Space Poop Challenge

NASA announced the winners of its "Space Poop Challenge" to develop a solution to help astronauts safely expel physical waste in spacesuits.
Using crowdsourcing site HeroX NASA awarded a total of $30,000 in prizes to five members of the public, including two doctors, a dentist, an engineer and a product designer.
Astronauts now wear diapers while conducting launch and entry activities and in-space activities which often require the use of a space suit for about 10 hours at a time.
NASA began to seek a more high tech solution that would provide a healthy or protective option for astronauts to expel waste for periods longer than one day, as they begin to travel beyond low earth orbit.
"What this challenge set out to crowdsource was a complete system inside a space suit that collects human waste for up to 144 hours and routes it away from the body, without the use of hands," NASA said. "The system had to operate in the conditions of space - where solids, fluids, and gases float around in microgravity (what most of us think of as "zero gravity") and don't necessarily mix or act the way they would on earth."
Thatcher Cardon, an Air Force officer, family practice physician and flight surgeon, claimed the top prize of $15,000 for his "MACES Perineal Access & Toileting System (M-PATS)" design, inspired by minimally invasive surgical techniques.
"I never thought that keeping the waste in the suit would be any good," Cardon told NPR. "So I thought, 'How can we get in and out of the suit easily?'"
Cardon's design allows astronauts to change their underwear and pass items such as inflatable bedpans and diapers through a small airlock in the suit.
"I thought about what I know regarding less invasive surgeries like laparoscopy or arthroscopy or even endovascular techniques they use in cardiology — they can do some amazing things in very small openings," he said. "I mean, they can even replace heart valves now through catheters in an artery. So it should be able to handle a little bit of poop!"
The second place prize of $10,000 was awarded to a group known as Space Poop Unification of Doctors, consisting of a physician, an engineering professor and a dentist.
The trio developed an air-powered system to push waste away from the astronaut's body and pour it in different parts of the suit.
"More specifically, that air is created by passive and active normal body movements of the astronaut," team leader Jose Gonzales said.
Product designer Hugo Shelley was awarded $5,000 for placing third with his "SWIMSuit — Zero Gravity Underwear," which disinfects and stores waste inside the suit.
"Making something as comfortable as possible I thought was fairly important...a lot of your mechanism really has to be in, effectively, the first few millimeters away from the skin," he said.
Orion crew survival system project manager at NASA Dustin Gohmert said the winning ideas will be combined to create a system that will actually be used in space.
"Optimistically this will never be used, because it is a contingency scenario that something catastrophic has happened," he said. "But this will be on Orion and should something happen, and should it be called on to save the crew, this will be there and at their disposal."

A Fairy Tale Come True—Stay In A Castle

NAPSI)—If you or your kids have been dreaming about living like princes and princesses—at least for a while—you may be glad to know it’s possible to live your own fairy tale. You can join the more than 9,000 people who this year will choose to rent a castle through HomeAway® instead of more traditional vacation rentals like beach houses and mountain cabins.
The vacation home rental site offers nearly 1,000 castles around the world and expects them to be a popular option in 2017 as travelers may draw inspiration from Disney’s new live-action adaption of “Beauty and the Beast,” which takes place in an enchanted castle. Surprisingly, the price tag on these castles won’t leave you royally broke. In fact, renting a castle can be as cheap as $20 per guest a night.
In celebration of the movie, HomeAway is giving away the ultimate dream vacation. One lucky winner will be able to bring up to 20 guests to all vacation together in the 14th-century castle in Scotland this summer. The prize package includes a five-night stay in the majestic Duns Castle and includes travel arrangements for all guests.
Members of the winning party will have the entire castle to themselves. They will be free to roam the 1,200 acres as they wish and can partake in the many activities offered on the grounds, such as archery and falconry. Or, they may choose to wander around the many rooms of the castle, dancing, singing, looking for magic mirrors, or conversing with the furniture hoping it will talk back, just like in “Beauty and the Beast.”
Located on the Scottish border just an hour south of Edinburgh, the Duns Castle Estate boasts its own nature reserve with extensive forest trails. The winning guests will be treated to custom experiences such as wine tastings and art classes.
The contest runs through March 31, 2017 at www.HomeAway.com/Disney.
More Great Spots For Your Getaway
In addition to castles, the company has more than 2 million other unique places to stay in more than 190 countries. You can choose from private islands, tree houses, houseboats, or more traditional options such as lake, beach and mountain homes. Vacation home rentals consistently come with twice the space for about half the cost per person of hotel rooms and the only thing you have to share is creating memories.

Automotive Care..
Money-Back Guarantees Add Appeal To
Safety-Critical Auto Repairs

(NAPSI)—When your vehicle’s brakes wear out, they probably “chirp” or grind. When your tires become worn, you can see the loss of tread depth.
Failed headlamp? Worn wiper blades? The evidence is right in front of you.
But how do you monitor the condition of safety critical parts that are largely “invisible” beneath your vehicle’s chassis? Shock absorbers, for example, play critical roles in protecting your driving safety by keeping your tires planted firmly on the road, which in certain driving conditions can help you stop sooner, maintain more precise steering control and improve vehicle stability. That’s why having your suspension inspected at least once a year is vitally important—you might not be aware that your shocks and other key safety components are no longer doing what they’re designed to do.
Ask About a Guarantee
Some leading automotive parts manufacturers have established money-back guarantees to help demonstrate the importance of replacing worn components. The Monroe shocks and struts brand, for example, now promises consumers they will “Feel the Difference” in ride and handling performance following installation of select new Monroe shocks and/or struts or get their money back, plus labor and alignment (if applicable), during a risk-free 90-day or 1,000-mile trial period.
“Consumers have the right to expect a noticeable, positive difference in vehicle performance following a repair,” said Mark Boyle, director of marketing for Tenneco, U.S.-based manufacturer of Monroe ride control products. “Our new Feel the Difference Guarantee is designed to offer the consumer assurance that they are making a wise investment in their vehicle. It also helps promote confidence and loyalty in their relationship with the repair provider.”
Because shocks and struts often wear out very gradually, the slow degradation of ride and handling precision can be difficult to detect—not unlike the gradual change in your eyesight. But, just as a new vision prescription can have surprising benefits, vehicle owners who replace worn shocks and struts or other undercar components can experience dramatically improved ride and handling. New ride control parts can also reduce chances of abnormal wear of other components, including tires.
“After a ride control repair, many consumers are amazed at the difference in their overall driving experience,” Boyle said. “A guarantee like ours essentially is an investment in educating consumers about the ‘invisible’ parts that help keep them safe. And it helps ensure they get quality products from a supplier they can trust.”

The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to hontzc@bangorsd.org

Letters to Homefront Magazine
A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers

The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.
Please send a check payable to the Slate Belt Heritage Center (att: Marc Blau) for $35.00 to reserve your copy. Those out of town desiring a copy must add $10..00 to cover cost for shipping/handling. For additional information contact: Karen Brewer @ 610-588-8615.
