OK enters national vernacular - 1839

On this day in 1839, the initials “O.K.” are first published in The Boston Morning Post. Meant as an abbreviation for “oll korrect,” a popular slang misspelling of “all correct” at the time, OK steadily made its way into the everyday speech of Americans.
During the late 1830s, it was a favorite practice among younger, educated circles to misspell words intentionally, then abbreviate them and use them as slang when talking to one another. Just as teenagers today have their own slang based on distortions of common words, such as “kewl” for “cool” or “DZ” for “these,” the “in crowd” of the 1830s had a whole host of slang terms they abbreviated. Popular abbreviations included “KY” for “No use” (“know yuse”), “KG” for “No go” (“Know go”), and “OW” for all right (“oll wright”).
The man responsible for unraveling the mystery behind “OK” was an American linguist named Allen Walker Read. An English professor at Columbia University, Read dispelled a host of erroneous theories on the origins of “OK,” ranging from the name of a popular Army biscuit (Orrin Kendall) to the name of a Haitian port famed for its rum (Aux Cayes) to the signature of a Choctaw chief named Old Keokuk. Whatever its origins, “OK” has become one of the most ubiquitous terms in the world, and certainly one of America’s greatest lingual exports.

Park Uses Facial Recognition To Prevent Toilet Paper Theft![]() (UPI) -- A park in China has installed a facial recognition toilet paper dispensing system to prevent theft.
The newly installed machines in bathrooms at Temple of Heaven park in Beijing scan visitors' faces for three seconds before rationing 24 to 27.5 inches of toilet paper, which the park upgraded from one-ply to two-ply. The machines are placed at the height of the average man or woman and will not dispense additional toilet paper until nine minutes have passed. "If we encounter guests who have diarrhea or any other situation in which they urgently require toilet paper, then our staff on the ground will directly provide the toilet paper," a spokesman said. Temple of Heaven implemented the highly elaborate toilet dispensing system after it reported guests regularly took excessive amounts of toilet paper to use at home. Some guests have reported a multitude of errors and other concerns since the cameras were installed. Visitors have complained about longer lines and wait times and reported that malfunctions have left them waiting for the machine to dispense toilet paper for more than a minute. Machines have also broken down completely in some instances, leaving bathroom staff solely responsible for distributing toilet paper. The machines also raised privacy issues for some visitors, who argued cameras do not belong in the bathroom stalls. "I thought the toilet was the last place I had a right to privacy, but they are watching me in there too," a social media user said. |
Personal Finance...
3 tax hints every investor should know![]() (BPT) - It's a common misconception that if you have investments you need to shell out a large chunk of change to have your taxes prepared by an accounting genius. The truth is, it's easy and affordable to do your own taxes and maximize tax savings - even if you're an investor.
"First and foremost, gather all of your tax forms and financial information before you get to work on your return. It will save you time when you prepare your return and the process will be much easier," says Mark Jaeger, director of tax development for online tax preparation software provider TaxAct. "In addition to tax forms from brokerages, employers and financial institutions, you'll also want to have all documentation about your transactions readily available. That information will help prevent you from overpaying or underpaying taxes on your investments." Many DIY tax preparation solutions import transactions directly from brokerages or provided data files. TaxAct, for example, offers electronic import for most common tax forms including W-2 (Wage and Tax Statement), 1099-B (broker transactions), 1099-INT (interest income), 1099-OID (Original Issue Discount), 1099-DIV (dividend income) and 1099-R (retirement income). However, if you have hundreds or thousands of transactions and you can't electronically import the related brokerage statements, Jaeger recommends entering your total short- and long-term gains on Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets. Then, you'll simply attach the statements that list your transactions individually when you e-file your return. The following helpful tips from TaxAct can help you save time and money when you prepare your tax return this year. 1. Don't rely solely on your Form 1099s. Verify the information shown on your Form 1099-Bs aligns with your records. It is a good idea to review cost basis and date acquired. Whether that information is included on your form depends on where the investment originated and how long you've held the asset. Keep in mind even if you don't see your cost basis and acquisition date on your Form 1099-B, you still have to report that information on your tax return. Without it, any sales proceeds without a cost basis will be taxed as a capital gain. If you're still waiting for 1099s or other investment information, Jaeger recommends preparing as much of your return as possible now, but wait to file until you receive it to avoid amending your return. 2. Make sure you report the correct cost basis. The cost basis is the purchase price of an asset adjusted for stock splits, dividends, return of capital distributions and any other basis adjustments. It is important to use the correct cost basis to accurately report and calculate a capital gain versus a loss, the difference between the asset's sales proceeds and the cost basis. Even if your cost basis is reported on Form 1099-B, it is a good idea to check your investment records to verify it's correct. The cost basis reported on your Form 1099-B is based on the information available to your brokerage, which may not include data needed to calculate the true cost basis. For example, the sale of certain employer stock options may be reported on your Form W-2 and Form 1099-B. If you don't adjust your cost basis to account for this, your sale may be taxed as ordinary income and as a capital gain. If you need to report adjustments to cost basis amounts on your tax return, you'll include the adjusted amounts and an adjustment code next to each that explains the reason for the change. 3. Short- and long-term gains: Make sure you know the difference. Assets held for more than 12 months are considered long-term and benefit from reduced capital gains tax rates of zero, 15 and 20 percent based on your tax bracket. On the other hand, short-term gains for assets held for less than 12 months are taxed at ordinary rates. Verify the asset's purchase date before selecting the short-term or long-term reporting category for the transaction on your tax return. Remember, the date acquired may not be on Form 1099-B. Incorrectly reporting the term may result in overstating or understating your total tax liability. For future investments, you may want to consider waiting to sell assets with large gains or holding periods approaching one year. For more investment tax tips visit www.irs.gov. Education and Careers...Committed to care: Higher education institutions pledge dedication to student success![]() (BPT) - The future of higher education is often the subject of debate; what constitutes a valuable education for students continues to shift as student demographics change. Recently, government regulators and other external stakeholders have been questioning the value of for-profit higher education, specifically, citing for-profit colleges and universities that have not upheld their commitment to students. For-profit education organizations like DeVry Education Group contend that their institutions are uniquely positioned to serve the new majority of students - those who juggle full-time jobs, families and other obligations in order to pursue their educational goals, typically years after they complete high school. This new normal is now the largest group of college attendees, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Some schools are working to demonstrate this unique value, and their commitment to students, by providing information to students making the decision to attend college. This includes setting and communicating new standards to help students achieve their educational and career goals, and formalizing their institution's commitment to students through public proclamations designed to hold them accountable to student and stakeholder interests. Chamberlain College of Nursing has made standards for student support part of the very fabric of its academic offering. Through an educational philosophy called Chamberlain Care, the organization has created a culture that fosters collaboration, cooperation and respect among all through a care-based set of beliefs, values and behaviors. "We believe that if we provide our students with the care and support they need to be successful, they will go on to provide that same level of care as nurses," says Susan Groenwald, national president of Chamberlain. "That's why we built the Chamberlain Care model. It naturally extends outwards from each student to their patients and to the communities they serve." Recently, DeVry Education Group and its institutions, including Chamberlain College of Nursing, announced a set of Student Commitments formed in partnership with students and stakeholders to guide education and service to students. The commitments go above and beyond standard higher education policies and practices to provide a new level of public accountability in hopes of inspiring institutions throughout the industry. They also encourage dialogue about value in education that will ultimately benefit all students, regardless of the institution they attend, and the employers who seek to hire them. The public proclamation outlines the following commitments, which Chamberlain hopes will serve as a model for other educators to consider for strengthening the industry's commitment to students: 1. Informed student choice. Help students make informed decisions by providing information about program performance and costs, and an orientation around student support services, online learning platforms and academic policies. 2. Responsible recruitment and enrollment. Provide financial and academic advising to prospective students and benchmark and disclose recruiting expenditures against national standards. 3. Responsible participation in the federal loan process. Lower institutional limits on federal funding and provide students with a variety of ways to manage tuition costs. 4. Financial literacy and academic transparency. Increase student visibility into program progression, loan balance and financial position throughout their academic journey. 5. Improving student satisfaction. Conduct student surveys to track progress and actively respond to results and feedback. 6. Successful student outcomes and accountability. Identify and proactively engage with students who may be at risk for program completion, and account for student satisfaction and quality outcomes in performance management for executive leadership. "Our role as educators is to lay the foundation for the future generation of leaders. Part of that is providing students with as many resources as possible to successfully complete their studies," Groenwald says. "By committing to put our students first, we are ensuring that they get the most out of their education and can pay it forward in the workplace." When leaders in higher education voluntarily invest in transparent practices to strengthen the student experience, all stakeholders benefit. For the new majority of students who face challenges at work and at home, their academic success depends on a school's commitment to them - not just their commitment to the school. Institutions like Chamberlain that put these students first are redefining the college experience and reinforcing the value of higher education today. |

Letters to Homefront Magazine
A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers

The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.
Please send a check payable to the Slate Belt Heritage Center (att: Marc Blau) for $35.00 to reserve your copy. Those out of town desiring a copy must add $10..00 to cover cost for shipping/handling. For additional information contact: Karen Brewer @ 610-588-8615.

1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to hontzc@bangorsd.org
