Can You Believe It?
President of Iceland would ban pineapple as a pizza topping
(UPI) -- The president of Iceland shared his disdain for pineapple on pizza by announcing he would ban the topping. While speaking at a high school in North Iceland President Gudni Thorlacius Johannesson was asked how he felt about pineapples as a pizza topping and replied by saying if he could pass laws he would ban the topping throughout the country.
Gudni, who holds an approval rating of 97 percent, was also asked which English premiere league soccer team he rooted for.
The pizza topic was the question that gained the most attention and prompted the president to release a statement.
"I like pineapples, just not on pizza," he said. "I do not have the power to make laws which forbid people to put pineapples on their pizza. I am glad that I do not hold such power."
After clarifying his stance on pineapples, Gudni shared his thoughts on presidential power and offered his own pizza topping recommendation.
"Presidents should not have unlimited power. I would not want to hold this position if I could pass laws forbidding that which I don't like. I would not want to live in such a country," he said. "For pizzas, I recommend seafood."

Trying to quit? Tips from former smokers can help you succeed
(BPT) - Since the Surgeon General released the first report on smoking in 1964, the smoking rate among adults has decreased from 42 percent to 15 percent. Though great strides have been made, more than 36 million adults in the United States continue to smoke cigarettes, claiming nearly half a million lives a year and leaving 16 million others to live with an illness or disease caused by smoking. There are now more former cigarette smokers than current smokers in the United States, and more than half of all people who have ever smoked have quit, according to the CDC. If you're still smoking and would like to quit, you're not alone. Nearly seven out of 10 cigarette smokers want to quit for good. Although each person's journey to a tobacco-free life is different, knowing what's worked for others could help you find what works for you. Participants from CDC's Tips From Former Smokers(TM) campaign share what worked best for them in their journeys to quitting smoking.
Choose a quit date and support team
Tiffany Roberson, 35, of Louisiana started smoking when she was just 19, despite having watched her own mother, a smoker, die of lung cancer. Over the years, Roberson tried to quit multiple times but struggled to stay quit for good. When her own daughter turned 16, she was inspired to try again. This time, a combination of tactics helped her succeed.
* A nicotine patch helped control her cravings. She chose it because it was discrete and easy to use.
* She chose a quit date. To avoid the temptation to smoke, she stayed busy on that day.
* She told her daughter and another relative she was quitting so she would be accountable for staying smoke-free. Her relatives supported her with a daily text of encouragement, noting the day of her progress-"Day 2 without smoking" and, eventually, "Day 365 without smoking."
* During work breaks, she drank water instead of smoking.
Create accountability
Beatrice Rosa-Swerbilov, 40, from New York tried her first cigarette at just 7 years old, and became a regular smoker at age 13. Although she had tried many times before, she quit for good after her 11-year-old son wrote her a letter asking her to quit smoking. Here are her success strategies.
* Avoiding triggers-things or situations that made her crave a cigarette. For example, going out for drinks with friends was a trigger, so Rosa-Swerbilov gave up doing that for a while.
* Creating accountability for herself by telling everyone that she was quitting. Her hope was that if someone did see her smoking, they would say "Oh, I thought you quit," thus holding her accountable for her decision to quit smoking.
Manage stress
Amanda Brenden, of Wisconsin, began smoking in fifth grade and was a daily smoker by age 13. She would duck outside during the day - even during Wisconsin winters - to smoke. By college, she was smoking a pack a day. When she got engaged and found out she was pregnant, she tried to quit, without success. The stress of being a pregnant college student drove her back to cigarettes. Her daughter was born two months premature and today still struggles with asthma. Breathing problems like asthma are common in premature babies.
* Stress was a trigger for Brenden, as it is for many smokers. In a smoking cessation class, she learned stress reduction techniques. She also relied on support from her family.
* When Brenden feels frustrated, she exercises to release her negative energy rather than reaching for a cigarette.
Substitute positive for negative
James Fulton, 40, of New York, began smoking at 14 to emulate his father, a smoker who was well-respected in their community. When decades of smoking began to affect his health, Fulton created a plan for quitting that included replacing negative behaviors with positive ones.
When he felt a craving for a cigarette, he used a nicotine patch or chewed sugar-free gum. He's learned to rely on exercise, becoming an avid cyclist and swimmer.
Rebecca Cox-MacDonald, 57, of Texas, also found exercise to be helpful in quitting. Surrounded by a family of smokers, she started smoking as a teenager. Multiple events inspired her to try quitting a final time; her father died of a smoking-related illness, she watched the health of other relatives who smoked deteriorate, and she developed severe gum disease-a risk for smokers-that required her to get bone grafts and dental implants.
She quit and committed to a healthier lifestyle that included regular exercise like running and getting treatment for the depression that had been a major factor in keeping her smoking.

Fun ways to decorate for spring
(BPT) - Spring is the perfect time to shake things up with your home decor. As Mother Nature transforms her landscape with fresh buds and blooms, you're probably longing to refresh your home, too. These five easy craft projects are perfect family activities and the results will add touches of springtime throughout the house.
Rain boot wreath
Do you have a pair of rain boots your kids have grown out of? Use these as an adorable way to display silk flowers in the entryway. Simply select your favorite long-stem flowers from your local craft store (hint: tulips are perfect for spring). Have kids help arrange flowers inside boots and then hang with a large decorative ribbon on your door.
Thumbprint flower pots
Jazz up boring terracotta pots with acrylic paint and the tiny fingerprints from your mini helpers. Have kids wear a smock (acrylic paint can stain), then carefully dip fingertips into paint and press onto the pot. For example, red fingerprints can be turned into cute ladybugs with a few black details when dry. You can also use fingerprints to create flowers, butterflies and more.
Flip-flop welcome sign
Favorite warm-weather foot gear can be used to create a cute sign welcoming guests to your home. Buy four pairs of colorful flip flops from any dollar store. Line up and then adhere each side together with hot glue (eight flip-flops total glued together). On the heel of each sandal paint a letter from "Welcome!" When done, let kids adorn with colorful gems, stickers, and other fun spring details.

Supplies:
4-inch cube vase
6-inch cube vase
Jelly beans
30 Gerbera Daisies or silk flowers of choice
20 PEEPS Bunnies
Directions:
1. Center one vase inside the other and insert jelly beans (in any colors you like) between the walls of the two cubes.
2. Place PEEPS on top of jelly beans, making sure to save a few for the corners of the vase. Don't be afraid to squeeze them into the space. You should have enough to fill in any gaps.
3. Gerberas are usually sold with plastic tubes on the stems for support. Keeping the plastic in place, cut the flowers to desired length and arrange them in the smaller vase.
4. Cutting shorter stems for the outside flowers and longer stems for the inner ones will give you a nice rounded top. And don't skimp on flowers: If you don't want to use that many gerberas, find a pair of smaller vases.
Pastel painted pine cones
Take kids on a nature walk and collect pine cones. Brush off dirt and allow to dry if moist. Then, lay out paper and have kids paint pine cones in festive pastel colors. Mint green, soft pink and sky blue are classic spring hues. Once dry, display in a decorative bowl and hang from strings in front of a window.

1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. Letters to Homefront Magazine
A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers
The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.

BAHS Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. Pen Argyl, PA – State Senator Mario Scavello will continue his Healthy Living Series in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to offer free Tdap vaccine shots at his Pen Argyl District Office on Thursday, February 23 from 10 AM to 11:30 AM (2 N. Robinson Avenue, Pen Argyl).
The Tdap vaccine shots are available to individuals of all ages who are uninsured or underinsured. This service is not available to anyone with Medicare Part D or insurance that already covers the vaccination.
Tdap is a combination booster vaccine that inoculates against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough).

Also learn about edible plants that can help save you in an emergency situation! Participants should wear waterproof boots, dress for the weather, bring snacks and bottled water. Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area is one of the premier birding spots in eastern Pennsylvania. It is an early spring staging area for up to 100,000 Snow Geese and over 4,000 Tundra Swans. Join us for this birding tour of Middle Creek as we enjoy this spectacle and look for many other species of waterfowl. Both Ross’s and Cackling Geese have been seen on previous trips. We’ll also check the extensive grasslands for raptors like Northern Harriers and Rough-legged Hawks. Bald Eagles are often seen and Golden Eagles are seen occasionally. Leaders will stay until dusk to listen for American Woodcocks and to look for Short-eared Owls. This program is free of charge. Participants should dress for the weather and bring binoculars and a lunch. This is a great opportunity for photographers. Registration is required.

The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church is offering a Lenten Bible Study, "The Seedy Side of Jacob". We all know Jacob, the highly-regarded patriarch of the Israelites. From Jacob came the offspring who became "The Twelve Tribes of Israel," who were the foundation of the Jewish movement. Jacob was, and is, highly revered. He was also human - very human. And in his humanness his quest for power and authority often got in the way of his decision-making process. During Lent, we will take a look at the less-than-admirable side of Jacob in the quest to embrace our own humanity and seek alternatives to accomplishing God's will without resorting to cleverness and self-centeredness. American Cancer Society Egg Hunt
The American Cancer Society's second annual community egg hunt will be held Saturday, April 1, 2:00 pm at East Bangor Park, The egg hunt will be for ages 0 to 10. An adult egg hunt will follow. They are looking for vendors, have limited space with first come, first serve for $10. Adult Pair Egg Hunt for a five-dollar donation. Several prizes will be given out. Take a picture with the Easter bunny using your own camera for a donation. Bake sale!!! Special thanks to East Bangor Fire Company and East Bangor Park Board.
