The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Flood Watch for the entire area including the Slate Belt from Thursday morning through Friday afternoon. Rain with embedded thunderstorms is forecast to overspread the region on Thursday. Rain will likely be heavy at times, especially Thursday morning into early afternoon. Rainfall totals of one to two inches with isolated three inch amounts are expected. This will be the third rainfall event in the last week. The ground remains wet, and rivers and streams continue to run high. The moderate to heavy rain will likely result in some roadway flooding along with flooding in areas of poor drainage on Thursday. Isolated instances of flash flooding may occur, especially in urban areas. Some small streams and creeks may leave their banks Thursday afternoon into Thursday night. Minor to moderate flooding could then occur along a number of larger rivers late Thursday night into Friday. The river flooding could persist through the weekend.

Emrick Lauds MLB's Saving Majestic Job
HARRISBURG – VF Corp., owner of Majestic Athletic, today released details of the sale of its Licensed Sports Group, including Majestic, to Fanatics Inc. State Rep. Joe Emrick (R-Nazareth) issued the following statement in reaction to the announcement that nearly 600 jobs at the Majestic facility in Palmer Township have been saved thanks to actions taken by Major League Baseball: “When caller ID on my telephone read ‘Major League Baseball’ on more than one occasion late Monday, I logically assumed it was a wrong number. Thankfully, and very graciously, league officials were persistent in reaching out to me with news that the threat of job losses at Majestic’s Palmer Township plant was over. “Anyone who has ever owned a jersey from their favorite baseball team need only look at the shirt tails to see the Majestic logo. The initial news in December that Under Armour had struck a deal to manufacture all on-field apparel, including jerseys and game-day and training outerwear, for our national pastime was devastating for our area. “While I’m already a fan of Major League Baseball, I now have an even greater appreciation for the game and those who run it. League officials were very cognizant of the potential impact the loss of these jobs would have had on our community. They worked tirelessly with the companies involved to guarantee the plant and those who work there would not be negatively affected. Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family. The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest. Pocahontas, daughter of the chief of the Powhatan Indian confederacy, marries English tobacco planter John Rolfe in Jamestown, Virginia. The marriage ensured peace between the Jamestown settlers and the Powhatan Indians for several years. In May 1607, about 100 English colonists settled along the James River in Virginia to found Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America. The settlers fared badly because of famine, disease, and Indian attacks, but were aided by 27-year-old English adventurer John Smith, who directed survival efforts and mapped the area. While exploring the Chickahominy River in December 1607, Smith and two colonists were captured by Powhatan warriors. At the time, the Powhatan confederacy consisted of around 30 Tidewater-area tribes led by Chief Wahunsonacock, known as Chief Powhatan to the English. Smith’s companions were killed, but he was spared and released, (according to a 1624 account by Smith) because of the dramatic intercession of Pocahontas, Chief Powhatan’s 13-year-old daughter. Her real name was Matoaka, and Pocahontas was a pet name that has been translated variously as “playful one” and “my favorite daughter.”
Their marriage brought a peace between the English colonists and the Powhatans, and in 1615 Pocahontas gave birth to their first child, Thomas. In 1616, the couple sailed to England. The so-called Indian Princess proved popular with the English gentry, and she was presented at the court of King James I. In March 1617, Pocahontas and Rolfe prepared to sail back to Virginia. However, the day before they were to leave, Pocahontas died, probably of smallpox, and was buried at the parish church of St. George in Gravesend, England. John Rolfe returned to Virginia and was killed in an Indian massacre in 1622. After an education in England, their son Thomas Rolfe returned to Virginia and became a prominent citizen. John Smith returned to the New World in 1614 to explore the New England coast. On another voyage of exploration in 1614, he was captured by pirates but escaped after three months of captivity. He then returned to England, where he died in 1631. BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement. Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. We are looking for scientists, college students, naturalists and interested volunteers to help conduct an intensive field study at Jacobsburg over a 24 hour time period. Registration is required.

The Blue Mountain Community Library will hold its 3rd Antiques Appraisal and Silent Auction Event on Friday, April 7, 2017, from 5:30-8:00 PM at Slate Belt Nazareth Baptist Church, 1620 Church Road, Pen Argyl, PA 18072. The antiques appraisals will be conducted by licensed auctioneers Lori Biechy of Lori Biechy Auctions, Christian Answini of Saucon Valley Auction Co., and Les and Ginny Beyer, all who are generously donating their time and expertise. In addition to the appraisals, the event will feature a Silent Auction of over 50 items, including Baskets and Gift Cards, donated by a large number of area businesses. Barbecue, hot dogs, other food items, and beverages will be for sale. For food purchase and auction participation, cash and checks will be accepted.
Appraisal tickets for the evening are available at the library (216 South Robinson Avenue in Pen Argyl) during regular business hours (M-Sa 10AM-12PM and M-Th 6-8PM) or may be purchased at the Door. Writing in a style she describes as in the lyrical tradition of Virginia Woolf and Harriet Doerr, Joyce Hinnefeld is a Moravian College professor and acclaimed author of acclaimed fiction, poetry and essays.
She will give a reading from her novel In Hovering Flight, followed by an audience discussion and afternoon tea, on Monday, April 10, 2:30 p.m. at Northampton Community College (NCC), Bethlehem Campus in College Center, Room 114. Admission is free.
The novel is about a woman, Addie’s visit to her dying mother, a famous bird artist and “infamous” environmentalist. During the visit, Addie comes to peace with her mother’s complicated life and reveals a secret that has haunted her own life. The Washington Post called the novel “as quiet as twilight and as lovely.”
Hinnefeld received graduate degrees from Northwestern University and the State University of New York at Albany. She is the author of fiction, poetry and nonfiction. She is a professor at Moravian College.
The reading and tea are a part of NCC’s celebration of its 50th anniversary and its 2017-2018 humanities series Birds and the Human Spirit.

Meet The Authors of Letters to Homefront
What began as a treasure trove find of over 4000 letters, postcards and
v-mails has culminated in the publishing of the Slate Belt Heritage Center’s latest book: Letters to Homefront Magazine: A Love Story Between a Community and Its WWII Soldiers. On Thursday, April 20, 2017 @ 7:00 PM, the Heritage Center will hold its monthly historic presentation entitled: “Meet the Authors”. Present will be: Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Deanna Ruzanski and Karen Brewer co-authors of the book along with the volunteer readers who assisted in bringing this story to fruition. It was a project that has been 15 years in the making since the finding of the letters and was finally put into forward motion as of October 2015. It has now blossomed into a total “Labor of Love”. The authors will be present to relate their journey throughout the process and answer questions.
On display, in the Chamber Showcases, will be “Homefront and World War II Memorabilia”. Distribution and book signing will be on Sunday April 23rd, at the Heritage Center from 9 -12 Noon. The Friends of the Bangor Public Library will hold a “Meet the Author” event on Saturday, April 29, 2017 @ 10:00 AM at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Johnsonsville, PA. Featured Author will be Karen Shoemaker Katchur who will present her latest book: The Sisters of Blue Mountain. Main character in the book, Linnet, is owner of a Bed and Breakfast in Mountain Springs, Pennsylvania and her life has been a bit complicated lately. Hundreds of snow geese die overnight in the dam near the B&B, sparking a media frenzy, threatening the tourist season and bringing her estranged younger sister to town. A mystery evolves as a result of this occurrence and the sisters confront each other in a hidden past.
There will be a discussion and book signing with Ms. Katchur. Karen graduated from Bangor High School, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from West Chester University and a Master of Education degree from East Stroudsburg University. She is an active member of International Thriller Writers and Mystery Writers of America. BMCL Lunch With The Author
The Blue Mountain Community Library will hold an “Lunch With An Author” event on Tuesday, May 2 at Grace United Methodist Church, 404 E. Mountain Ave., Pen Argyl, PA. The church is handicapped accessible with ample parking. (Enter from the lower parking lot). Local author, Kate Moretti, will discuss her latest novel, “The Vanishing Year,” a chilling, powerful tale of nerve-shattering suspense, which tells the story of Zoe Whittaker, a member of Manhattan’s social elite, whose dark past and secrets come back to haunt her. Moretti, who lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and two children, has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for ten years as a scientist. She will have a question and answer session about her book and a book signing. Copies will be available to purchase.

First Round of JazzFest 2017 Events
Performing Arts Live released the first portion of the Allentown JazzFest 2017 schedule. The program has broadened to include live spoken word and conversation performances, and will introduce new musical styles into JazzFest. Consistent with prior years, a large majority of the overall schedule will be free to the public. JazzFest opens on Wednesday, May 3, and concludes Sunday, May 7, 2017.
Today’s announcements are the first of a group of performer announcements that will stretch over the next three weeks. It is expected there will be 6 or 7 additional performances to be announced.
All the 2017 events will occur in the Hamilton Street downtown area between 9th and 5th Streets, except for one event in Emmaus. The schedule can be viewed and tickets can be purchased through allentownjazzfest.org.

Fundraiser for BAHS Band Member
A fundraiser to benefit Bangor band member Elizabeth Goffinet's AMA trip to Europe to represent the band will be held at the Bangor Elks Sunday, May 7 from 4-8pm. Tickets include food and drinks, entertainment, 50/50 sold the day of the event.Tickets are $20.00
