Harry Adams Secret to a Long Life![]() by Jennifer Trinkley
What is the secret to a long life ? Well, if you ask ninety-two and-a-half-year old Harry Adams of Bangor, its his mother's genes. Adams says she only ever gave birth to three children and had two cataracts and lived to be ninety-two. On October 8th, Harry will surpass his mother and turn ninety-three years old. He was originally from New Jersey and moved to his family's farm in Pennsylvania when he was twelve years old after a bout of scarlet fever. He also is one of only three surviving original graduates of the Class of 1939 at Washington Elementary School in Bangor. He says that he had to walk four miles everyday once he got to high school since busing wasn't provided in those days. He was known as the class jokester, and Catherine Miller another of the original students, reminded him of the day when he was able to make a very somber teacher actually smile. He remembers how important the discipline and respect he learned in school was, and how it helped him throughout his many years. He remembers each and every one of his teachers, because as he says " they were all a positive influence in my life." Harry hopes that everyone will count their blessings since you never know how short life truly is. On the day before he was supposed to start his senior year at Bangor High School, Harry decided to turn left on the road he was on and headed to Philipsburg NJ. where he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps. While in New York, he met his wife Marion who he was blessed to be married to for sixty years before she passed away eleven years ago. She wrote him letters everyday while he was away stationed on the U.S.S. Boxer CV21 in the Pacific for one year. With amazing endearment he said "sometimes she even wrote me two." When he came home they got married and were blessed with five sons. After he returned state side, Harry worked for Prudential Insurance until he retired. After retiring he became the ski club coordinator for Shawnee Mountain and is still employed there after thirty-two years. Every Saturday he is joined by four sons, two daughters-in-laws, and two of his grandchildren for dinner, and during the season, the Penn State football games. At a recent Washington Elementary School reunion he was joined by the following: Catherine Miller (pictured with Adams) also of 1939, Wayne Pysher class of 1954, Roy Godshalk class of 1954, Edna (last name unknown) of the class of 1957, Edwin Simons also of the class of 1957, Kay Hill class of 1959, and Jimmy Adams of the class of 1959. Brayden Hendershot a 1999 Bangor graduate and director of human resources for Bangor School District, spoke to the attendees about all the changes between what they knew as students versus what today's students do in their classes. He explained how each classroom now has a big screen TV in each class that interacts with the ipads of children and teachers. He also told the graduates about a classroom of Bangor students which were able to interact with a classroom of students in Africa on an assignment. ![]() Bangor High School honored girls tennis team seniors Thursday night. Cartwright Bill Prepares for Climate Change Health Impact![]() Washington, DC – Today, Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-17) and Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) introduced legislation that will help improve America’s public health response to climate change by supporting research, monitoring, and preparation in the health sector and by developing a national action plan. Representatives Brad Schneider (IL-10), Doris Matsui (CA-06), and Salud Carbajal (CA-24) joined in introducing the House bill.
The Climate Change Health Protection and Promotion Act would direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services acting through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop a National Strategic Action Plan to assist health professionals in preparing for and responding to the public health effects of climate change. The recent horrific impacts of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma are evidence of the potential for more. ”Specifically, the Climate Change Health Protection and Promotion Act would:

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - September 22Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation 1862 On this day in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issues a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which sets a date for the freedom of more than 3 million black slaves in the United States and recasts the Civil War as a fight against slavery. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, shortly after Lincoln’s inauguration as America’s 16th president, he maintained that the war was about restoring the Union and not about slavery. He avoided issuing an anti-slavery proclamation immediately, despite the urgings of abolitionists and radical Republicans, as well as his personal belief that slavery was morally repugnant. Instead, Lincoln chose to move cautiously until he could gain wide support from the public for such a measure. In July 1862, Lincoln informed his cabinet that he would issue an emancipation proclamation but that it would exempt the so-called border states, which had slaveholders but remained loyal to the Union. His cabinet persuaded him not to make the announcement until after a Union victory. Lincoln’s opportunity came following the Union win at the Battle of Antietam in September 1862. On September 22, the president announced that slaves in areas still in rebellion within 100 days would be free. In Case You Missed It......
