Slater Band To Debut New Uniforms![]() Pictured above are uniforms worn at last year's band festival. This also shows the Welsh emblem and the Welsh Flag. The new uniforms will be worn for the first time Friday during the Bangor - Northern Lehigh football game. Sbtt File Photo Larry Cory
The Bangor High School Marching Band will debut its new uniforms Friday night retaining the Welsh theme which began in 1975. Barry Transue, a long-time volunteer with the Bangor Slater Band, was involved with the concept of using the Welsh Guard theme for the band uniforms. He relates the following story about how this happened: In the summer of 1973, bands from the UK gave a performance at Muhlenberg College. A group of students and adults went on a bus to see the performance. The Bangor band director was John Farley and the flags director, then known as the Boleros, was Earl Rader who took a Welsh flag from the band room along to the performance. The first band to perform was the Scottish Guard. After an intermission, the Welsh Guard Band entered. They saw the Welsh flag that Rader waved. The leader approached the Bangor group and saluted them. Transue, Rader, and Farley had been discussing what to do about uniforms. Transue said that they then decided to model Bangor’s uniforms after the Welsh Guard. In the summer of 1975, Bangor had a large centennial celebration and the band wanted to have their new look for that parade. The Boosters raised $8,000 of the $16,000 cost for the uniforms. However, the uniforms did not arrive in time for the celebration. The first time the Welsh Guard style uniforms were worn was in October of 1975 at an away Wilson football game. Few in the crowd knew the idea behind the uniforms, so Transue went to the loud speaker and described the purpose of the Welsh theme. It was then that Transue became the announcer for the Bangor Band and continued as a volunteer announcer until 2007 after traveling to Wales with the Slater Marching Band. In the spring of 2017, new uniforms were ordered, continuing with the Welsh theme, and will be worn for the first time September 8, 2017. The Bangor Slater Band Boosters, with the support from the community, alumni, current members, and businesses raised $68,000 towards the purchase price of $117,000. The Board of Education contributed the additional towards the total cost. The old uniforms were retired after serving the band for 42 years. The Slater Band Boosters would like to thank all the donors, school administration, the Board of Education, and the community for all their support. Vendors Wanted

The name is linked to Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York, who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army during the War of 1812.Wilson (1766-1854) stamped the barrels with “U.S.” for United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as “Uncle Sam’s.” The local newspaper picked up on the story and Uncle Sam eventually gained widespread acceptance as the nickname for the U.S. federal government. In the late 1860s and 1870s, political cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840-1902) began popularizing the image of Uncle Sam. Nast continued to evolve the image, eventually giving Sam the white beard and stars-and-stripes suit that are associated with the character today. The German-born Nast was also credited with creating the modern image of Santa Claus as well as coming up with the donkey as a symbol for the Democratic Party and the elephant as a symbol for the Republicans. Nast also famously lampooned the corruption of New York City’s Tammany Hall in his editorial cartoons and was, in part, responsible for the downfall of Tammany leader William Tweed. Perhaps the most famous image of Uncle Sam was created by artist James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960). In Flagg’s version, Uncle Sam wears a tall top hat and blue jacket and is pointing straight ahead at the viewer. During World War I, this portrait of Sam with the words “I Want You For The U.S. Army” was used as a recruiting poster. The image, which became immensely popular, was first used on the cover of Leslie’s Weekly in July 1916 with the title “What Are You Doing for Preparedness?” The poster was widely distributed and has subsequently been re-used numerous times with different captions.
