U.S. space shuttle docks with Russian space station - 1995
On this day in 1995, the American space shuttle Atlantis docks with the Russian space station Mir to form the largest man-made satellite ever to orbit the Earth.
This historic moment of cooperation between former rival space programs was also the 100th human space mission in American history. At the time, Daniel Goldin, chief of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), called it the beginning of “a new era of friendship and cooperation” between the U.S. and Russia. With millions of viewers watching on television, Atlantis blasted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in eastern Florida on June 27, 1995.
Just after 6 a.m. on June 29, Atlantis and its seven crew members approached Mir as both crafts orbited the Earth some 245 miles above Central Asia, near the Russian-Mongolian border. When they spotted the shuttle, the three cosmonauts on Mir broadcast Russian folk songs to Atlantis to welcome them. Over the next two hours, the shuttle’s commander, Robert “Hoot” Gibson expertly maneuvered his craft towards the space station. To make the docking, Gibson had to steer the 100-ton shuttle to within three inches of Mir at a closing rate of no more than one foot every 10 seconds.
The docking went perfectly and was completed at 8 a.m., just two seconds off the targeted arrival time and using 200 pounds less fuel than had been anticipated. Combined, Atlantis and the 123-ton Mir formed the largest spacecraft ever in orbit. It was only the second time ships from two countries had linked up in space; the first was in June 1975, when an American Apollo capsule and a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft briefly joined in orbit.
Once the docking was completed, Gibson and Mir’s commander, Vladimir Dezhurov, greeted each other by clasping hands in a victorious celebration of the historic moment. A formal exchange of gifts followed, with the Atlantis crew bringing chocolate, fruit and flowers and the Mir cosmonauts offering traditional Russian welcoming gifts of bread and salt. Atlantis remained docked with Mir for five days before returning to Earth, leaving two fresh Russian cosmonauts on the space station. The three veteran Mir crew members returned with the shuttle, including two Russians and Norman Thagard, a U.S. astronaut who rode a Russian rocket to the space station in mid-March 1995 and spent over 100 days in space, a U.S. endurance record. Music in the Valley
Stroudsburg (PA) – On Saturday July 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is the place to be to enjoy the sounds of traditional music. Supported in part by a Project Stream grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the eleventh annual “Music in the Valley” will feature musical performances at various locations around the historic farm, reminiscent of how it would have been heard in the 19th century.
A variety of groups will perform at the different venues and the day will end with a jam session at 3:30. As well as performances throughout the day, there will be sessions to provide visitors with an opportunity to take a closer look at the music and maybe even try a featured instrument. Puppeteer, Bonnie Scott, will hold puppet shows throughout the day and the One Room School will be open. The outdoor Bake Oven will be in operation and Wagon Rides will take place, weather permitting.
There will be a seminar on traditional music presented by Norm Williams, Tom Druckenmiller, and Betty Druckenmiller. A wonderful opportunity to learn the background of songs you still know and love and how the music of our country developed through the last two centuries.
The event will be held rain or shine, under tents as needed. Schedule is subject to change. Music in the Valley is included in the price of admission for the historic farm tour of $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for ages 3 – 12. The farm tours will run on Saturday from 10:00 to 5:00. Great fun for all ages, so come for a few hours or bring a picnic lunch make a day of it.

Elderly woman tossed coins into plane's engine for 'good luck'
(UPI) -- A flight in China was delayed several hours after an elderly passenger tossed coins into the engine for "good luck."
The 80-year-old woman with the last name Qiu was seen tossing coins into the engine of the Airbus 320 while boarding the plane scheduled to fly from Pudong to Guangzhou to "wish a safe flight." Passengers who had already boarded the plane were asked to get off, as mechanics searched to determine if any coins were left inside the engine. Crews recovered one coin that landed inside the engine and eight more in the surrounding area during the inspection, which lasted about five hours. The pilot said serious damage, including engine failure, can occur if metal is sucked into the engine. Police confirmed Qiu, who was traveling with husband, daughter and son-in-law, did not have a criminal record or any indication of mental illness. China Southern Airlines said activities that threaten passenger safety are prohibited and the incident remains under investigation. |

Tasty Tuesdays at Trinity Lutheran Church
Trinity Lutheran Church, located at Broadway and 4th Streets in Bangor, will once again offer the free bag lunch program to children, families and individuals in the Slatebelt Community this summer. Tasty Tuesdays will begin on June 13 and will run until August 8th. Every Tuesday the bag lunch will be available between 11am- 1pm and will contain a sandwich, fresh fruit/vegetable, chips, healthy snack bar, and a drink. The bus will leave at 8:00 AM from Weiss Market, Route 512 in Bangor, and will return at 5:00 PM. Cost per individual is $95.00 which includes bus ticket and admission ticket into the museum. This is the only museum that tells the entire Civil War story. Local Civil War expert and the National Civil War Museum educator Dane DiFebo will host a special presentation for the tour. See exhibits, visit with re-enactors on the museum grounds, attend Hari Jones program on the United State Colored Troops in the South from 1865-1870 and much more. Reservations are required and a light lunch will be provided. Tickets are available at Bray’s News, 36 Broadway and Heard’s Market, 501 South Main Street, both in Bangor, PA. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. Let’s get ready to rumble on Saturday, July 1st when the holiday weekend kicks off in roaring style as the Hamlin Speedway hosts its second VetStock Firecracker 100 for the benefit of our area’s veterans.
The second annual event is an exciting and grueling 100-lap race that again will be sponsored by Hollywood Towing & Auto, The Honesdale National Bank and presented by S & S Speedways-Indoor Go-Karts and SS Promotions, LLC. Last year’s inaugural race drew huge crowds of family and devotees at what has been heralded by Dirt Track Digest as “one of the top entertainment values in the country today for small car division racing.”
In making this year’s announcement, Promotions Director Allesson Rode reiterated the Speedway’s unwavering commitment to support VetStock in its effort to ensure that the funds it raises benefit our local men, women and families who served our Country,” Veterans and current service members will have free admission with military ID. General admission is $10, seniors are $5, and children under 6 are free. Pit Passes are $25. Hot laps start at 6:00 p.m. with racing starting around 7:00 p.m. Gates open at 3:00 p.m.

Butterflies of Jacobsburg

Please join Bill Grant, local butterfly enthusiast, as he leads a walk through the fields of Jacobsburg in search of local species of butterflies. Participants will be able to help catch butterflies for closer observation. Participants should wear comfortable shoes; bring a hat, bottled water, and sunscreen. Butterfly nets will be available. Registration is required.

Why are native plants important? Native plants do a better job of providing food and shelter for native wild animals than do introduced plants and protect biodiversity. Please join us as we work to maintain our beautiful native plant gardens. Please dress for the weather and bring snacks, bottled water and work gloves. Registration is not required. Please join us for a two hour butterfly walk that same day from 10 AM-12 noon!

Portland Mayor Lance Prator is happy to announce the first ever 4th of July Parade in Portland and Upper Mount Bethel!
Yes, this coming 4th of July we will be having a Parade at 11am starting in Upper Mount Bethel at Custom Heliarc which is at the intersection of Turkey Ridge Road and Church Street.
The Parade will travel south on Church Street then onto Delaware Ave; then onto Route 611 and through the business district of Portland to State Street, turning right onto State Street and left into the Portland Social Hall’s (old firehouse) parking lot. The Parade will conclude with music, free hot dogs and refreshments to be served at the Hall.
Come meet our Fireman, Police, local politicians, and local recreational sports teams in addition to others who all will be marching in the Parade.
If your child or children would like to march in the parade all are welcome to do so. Children can decorate their bicycles and/or dress up in patriotic costumes. Prizes will be given to the winners! Children must be at Custom Heliarc at 10am to lineup and march in the Parade.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (June 23) – Families and friends visiting Pennsylvania’s state parks, lakes and other popular outdoor spots over the Independence Day holiday can enjoy a day of free fishing, thanks to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC).
Tuesday, July 4, marks the second of two free fishing days in the Commonwealth. The first was May 28.
First established in 1984 as part of the PFBC’s public outreach efforts, Fish-for-Free days allow anyone – residents and non-residents – to legally fish in Pennsylvania without a fishing license. From 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on both days, no fishing license is needed to fish in Pennsylvania's waterways. All other fishing regulations apply.
“The dates around Memorial Day and Independence Day were chosen because they are popular picnic and camping days, with many families already spending the day at lakes and parks throughout the state,” said Steve Kralik, director of the PFBC Bureau of Outreach, Education and Marketing. “Fish-for-Free days offer an easy, convenient way to introduce friends and family to the sport of fishing, or to reconnect with the sport if someone hasn’t fished in some time. On these days, individuals can fish at no cost.”
To make the fishing experience more convenient, people can borrow equipment from dozens of fishing tackle loaner sites across the state. Many of the sites are at state parks, which are always a popular place for visitors on the Independence Day holiday. Loaner sites are also available at county parks and some public libraries.

It is our goal to bring the basics back to children in this area. To focus on the very simple things in life that make it a better place. Showing pride in your community, having respect, showing kindness and encouraging random acts of kindness and honesty.
You are welcome to attend any that you are able!
THE FIRST NIGHT WILL BE JULY 6 AT 6:30 PM AND WE WILL FOCUS ON PRIDE IN YOUR COMMUNITY.
We will begin the night with some words from Judge Alicia Zito about what pride in your community means and things that your child can do to show that pride and help others show that pride.
While Judge Zito is speaking, your child will be given a canvas to encourage their artistic side by painting what community looks like through their eyes!
Another fun activity will follow along with a snack and then a quick recap for what to expect the following week!

Open Quoit Tournament
During the Bangor Block Party organizers would like to have a Open Quoit Tournament. The Open Quoit Tournament will start around 4:30-?, depending on how many teams join the tournament. It will be a double elimination for doubles only. It will cost $20 a person to participate in this tournament. The prize money will be as follows. The 1st place will receive 25%, 2nd place will receive 15%, and 3rd place will receive 10% of the winnings. This tournament is a HBBA fundraiser to help us support other events in downtown Bangor.

Friends of the Bangor Public Library Duck Race
The Friends of the Bangor Public Library will again sponsor its once famous Duck Race on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 in conjunction with Bangor’s Downtown Block Party. The numbered ducks will be placed in the Martin’s Creek at the Penna. Avenue bridge and will continue their trek until they reach the library bridge at Broadway and Main Streets. Four cash prizes will be given out to the first four ducks to cross the finish line. A percentage of tickets sold will determine the purse.

3rd Place: 5%
4th Place: 5%.

Stroudsburg (PA) – On Saturday July 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is the place to be to enjoy the sounds of traditional music. Supported in part by a Project Stream grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the eleventh annual “Music in the Valley” will feature musical performances at various locations around the historic farm, reminiscent of how it would have been heard in the 19th century.
A variety of groups will perform at the different venues and the day will end with a jam session at 3:30. As well as performances throughout the day, there will be sessions to provide visitors with an opportunity to take a closer look at the music and maybe even try a featured instrument. Puppeteer, Bonnie Scott, will hold puppet shows throughout the day and the One Room School will be open. The outdoor Bake Oven will be in operation and Wagon Rides will take place, weather permitting.
There will be a seminar on traditional music presented by Norm Williams, Tom Druckenmiller, and Betty Druckenmiller. A wonderful opportunity to learn the background of songs you still know and love and how the music of our country developed through the last two centuries.
The event will be held rain or shine, under tents as needed. Schedule is subject to change. Music in the Valley is included in the price of admission for the historic farm tour of $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for ages 3 – 12. The farm tours will run on Saturday from 10:00 to 5:00. Great fun for all ages, so come for a few hours or bring a picnic lunch make a day of it.

Friends of the Bangor Public Library Duck Race
The Friends of the Bangor Public Library will again sponsor its once famous Duck Race on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 in conjunction with Bangor’s Downtown Block Party. The numbered ducks will be placed in the Martin’s Creek at the Penna. Avenue bridge and will continue their trek until they reach the library bridge at Broadway and Main Streets. Four cash prizes will be given out to the first four ducks to cross the finish line. A percentage of tickets sold will determine the purse.

4th Place: 5%.

After attending the class sessions and passing the multiple choice exam, participants will receive a ServSafe® certificate which meets the PA Department of Agriculture’s requirement for food safety certification. BMCL Nature Adventure
The Blue Mt. Community Library will offer a new program this summer for children. The library will partner with Waste Management for NATURE ADVENTURE! Children entering Kindergarten through 3rd Grade are encouraged to attend this program for Storytime and outdoor activities and should dress to explore! The 3 programs will be held at 10:00 am at the WM Environmental Center, 891 Grand Central Road, Pen Argyl July 12 (Landfill Trucks and More!) and August 9 (Bluebirds and Tree Swallows).
The BMCL announces a special summer reading program called HIGH FIVE YOUR READING DRIVE! The program runs June 12 through August 12. Children entering Kindergarten through 8th Grade are encouraged to read at least 5 Library books and keep a log of their titles to earn one free book of their choosing from the Book Nook. The reading logs and information will be available at the front desk. Children 18 and under who do not have a library membership can open one, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The library is now automated and new library cards will be issued to replace old cards and you MUST have a PA driver’s license or ID with you to open a membership. Browns Presenting Letters to the Homefront
The Slate Belt Heritage Center is pleased to “welcome home” Slate Belt natives Kirk and Sara Brown on Thursday, July 13th @ 7:00 PM for their monthly historic presentation. This event will coincide with the Center’s recently published book: Letters to Homefront: A Love Story Between a Community and It’s WW II Soldiers.
Within a collection of hundreds of letters from more than forty men across all armed services, in all theatres throughout all the years of World War II, one set of letters and post cards stands out from the rest. It describes a story of meeting, separation, connection and loss-of-youth. It’s a correspondence that stands as the embodiment of the coming-of-age of the “Greatest Generation”. Uncovered in a battered trunk as a house was being broken-up, these letters to Margaret Frable define life in the small town of Bangor Pennsylvania and the changes that came with the dislocation of war.
As a result of this discovery Kirk (Margaret’s son) and Sara Brown will present a play commemorating this unique “pen-pal” relationship. They will read a collection of these war time letters preserved by Kirk’s mother that illustrate how far we’ve come but how little we’ve changed.
Sara Stine Brown hails from Portland, Pa and graduated Valedictorian of the Bangor High School Class of 1968. Kirk Brown grew up in Bangor and was Valedictorian of his Bangor High Class of 1970. It was a friendly competition that grew out of their meeting while portraying the contentious leads in Bangor’s first all school musical: Bye Bye Birdie. They have been married since 1975 and together they write, design and produce plays, have remodeled their old house, volunteered at church, and built gardens together while raising two sons.

Executive Director, Jayne Ann Recker states that the idea for the class came from the Celtic Song Writing Contest held at the Celtic Classic. The contest is for ameatur musicians and many inquire where they can find more instruction. The partnership with instructor Jim Carolan was the perfect fit.
As part of the continued educational programming, CCA is presenting a Crash Course in Celtic Songwriting by Jim Carolan of Big Daddy Songs on Thursday, July 20, 2017. This workshop is to encourage the continued tradition of Celtic tunes and to help those interested in entering the Celtic songwriting contest at Celtic Classic in September.
Jim Carolan, a Top 5 Billboard Hit Songwriter and International Award winning professional songwriter, will be the instructor from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Life in Christ Church, 51 E. Hillmond St. Bethlehem, 18018.
The 30th annual Celtic Classic runs from Friday, September 22nd through Sunday, September 24th in downtown historic Bethlehem. The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, August 11, 2017 at the Shawnee Golf Resort. “Shotgun Start” is at 7:30 AM with registration, coffee & Danish from 6:30 – 7:30 AM. Format is a 4-Man Scramble and the cost is $75.00 per golfer which includes, Golf, Cart, Food and Cookout after the event. Prizes include, “Longest Drive” and “Closest to Pin”. Bus Trip to National Civil War Museum
Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. The bus will leave at 8:00 AM from Weiss Market, Route 512 in Bangor, and will return at 5:00 PM. Cost per individual is $95.00 which includes bus ticket and admission ticket into the museum. This is the only museum that tells the entire Civil War story. Local Civil War expert and the National Civil War Museum educator Dane DiFebo will host a special presentation for the tour. See exhibits, visit with re-enactors on the museum grounds, attend Hari Jones program on the United State Colored Troops in the South from 1865-1870 and much more. Reservations are required and a light lunch will be provided. Tickets are available at Bray’s News, 36 Broadway and Heard’s Market, 501 South Main Street, both in Bangor, PA.
