Fidgets may harbor hidden danger for kids
The wildly popular toy made the annual list of unsafe summer playthings on Wednesday issued by the Boston-based World Against Toys Causing Harm. W.A.T.C.H.'s list highlights potentially hazardous items that parents should avoid.
Authorities in Germany said last week they plan to destroy tons of the tiny twirling gadgets that have been confiscated by customs agents. They said they tested the toys, which arrived from China, and found that bits could fall off and pose possible choking hazards for small children. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is also investigating several incidents involving the toys. A number of children have needed surgery after small parts got stuck in their throats. Fidget spinners were first designed to help children with concentration and to reduce fidgeting, although they picked up in popularity as a toy. Many different versions and designs have appeared as manufacturers sought to get in on the fad, with the TSA even singling out one design as "a weapon." Instead of helping kids concentrate, the toys tended to distract students at school, some educators said. A survey of 200 largest schools in the U.S. found about one-third of them had banned the toy. "Because it's a distraction we are no longer allowing them in school and if they do bring them to school, we will take them, hold on to them and then give them back at the end of the day," John McDonald, assistant principal at Delano Elementary School in Minnesota, told CBS Evening News earlier this year. Some fidget spinners sell for only a few dollars, while the most expensive gadgets can fetch a few hundred dollars. The ServSafe® course, conducted by Penn State Extension is being held at the Penn State Lehigh County Extension Office in Allentown on Tuesday, July 10, 2017 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and Monday, July 17 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. The exam will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 17. After attending the class sessions and passing the multiple choice exam, participants will receive a ServSafe® certificate which meets the PA Department of Agriculture’s requirement for food safety certification. The course covers information related to preventing cross contamination, safe handling of food, temperature control, cleaning and sanitization, proper storage, and pest control in addition to other relevant topics. The cost of the class is $185.00 and the registration deadline is July 5, 2017. Environmental Rights The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled June 20, on Pennsylvania Environmental Defense Fund v. Commonwealth. The majority decision is a huge win for the Pennsylvania Constitution, specifically Article 1, Section 27 (the "Environmental Rights Amendment"), and conservation. At the most basic level, the Court said that the Pennsylvania Constitution means what it says: The people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the environment. Pennsylvania's public natural resources are the common property of all the people, including generations yet to come. As trustee of these resources, the Commonwealth shall conserve and maintain them for the benefit of all the people. This right is part of the Constitution's Article 1-Pennsylvania's "Declaration of Rights"-which is akin to the U.S. Constitution's Bill of Rights. The immediate effect of the ruling is that the General Assembly and Governor are prohibited from selling oil and gas from State Forests without reinvesting the proceeds into conservation. CLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARTHIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 28Workers assemble first Corvette in Flint, Michigan - 1953 On this day in 1953, workers at a Chevrolet plant in Flint, Michigan, assemble the first Corvette, a two-seater sports car that would become an American icon. The first completed production car rolled off the assembly line two days later, one of just 300 Corvettes made that year. The idea for the Corvette originated with General Motors’ pioneering designer Harley J. Earl, who in 1951 began developing plans for a low-cost American sports car that could compete with Europe’s MGs, Jaguars and Ferraris. The project was eventually code-named “Opel.” In January 1953, GM debuted the Corvette concept car at its Motorama auto show at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. It featured a fiberglass body and a six-cylinder engine and according to GM, was named for the “trim, fleet naval vessel that performed heroic escort and patrol duties during World War II.” The Corvette was a big hit with the public at Motorama and GM soon put the roadster into production. On June 30, 1953, the first Corvette came off the production line in Flint. It was hand-assembled and featured a Polo White exterior and red interior, two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, a wraparound windshield, whitewall tires and detachable plastic curtains instead of side windows. The earliest Corvettes were designed to be opened from the inside and lacked exterior door handles. Other components included a clock, cigarette lighter and red warning light that activated when the parking brake was applied–a new feature at the time. The car carried an initial price tag of $3,490 and could go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 11 or 12 seconds, then considered a fairly average speed. In 1954, the Corvette went into mass production at a Chevy plant in St. Louis, Missouri. Sales were lackluster in the beginning and GM considered discontinuing the line. However, rival company Ford had introduced the two-seater Thunderbird around the same time and GM did not want to be seen bowing to the competition. Another critical development in the Corvette’s survival came in 1955, when it was equipped with the more powerful V-8 engine. Its performance and appeal steadily improved after that and it went on to earn the nickname “America’s sports car” and become ingrained in pop culture through multiple references in movies, television and music. Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. This is the only museum that tells the entire Civil War story. Local Civil War expert and the National Civil War Museum educator Dane DiFebo will host a special presentation for the tour. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. Portland Mayor Lance Prator is happy to announce the first ever 4th of July Parade in Portland and Upper Mount Bethel! Yes, this coming 4th of July we will be having a Parade at 11am starting in Upper Mount Bethel at Custom Heliarc which is at the intersection of Turkey Ridge Road and Church Street. The Parade will travel south on Church Street then onto Delaware Ave; then onto Route 611 and through the business district of Portland to State Street, turning right onto State Street and left into the Portland Social Hall’s (old firehouse) parking lot. The Parade will conclude with music, free hot dogs and refreshments to be served at the Hall. Come meet our Fireman, Police, local politicians, and local recreational sports teams in addition to others who all will be marching in the Parade. If your child or children would like to march in the parade all are welcome to do so. Children can decorate their bicycles and/or dress up in patriotic costumes. Prizes will be given to the winners! Music in the Valley Stroudsburg (PA) – On Saturday July 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is the place to be to enjoy the sounds of traditional music. Supported in part by a Project Stream grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the eleventh annual “Music in the Valley” will feature musical performances at various locations around the historic farm, reminiscent of how it would have been heard in the 19th century. A variety of groups will perform at the different venues and the day will end with a jam session at 3:30. As well as performances throughout the day, there will be sessions to provide visitors with an opportunity to take a closer look at the music and maybe even try a featured instrument. Puppeteer, Bonnie Scott, will hold puppet shows throughout the day and the One Room School will be open. The outdoor Bake Oven will be in operation and Wagon Rides will take place, weather permitting. There will be a seminar on traditional music presented by Norm Williams, Tom Druckenmiller, and Betty Druckenmiller. A wonderful opportunity to learn the background of songs you still know and love and how the music of our country developed through the last two centuries. The event will be held rain or shine, under tents as needed. Schedule is subject to change. Music in the Valley is included in the price of admission for the historic farm tour of $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for ages 3 – 12. The farm tours will run on Saturday from 10:00 to 5:00. Browns Presenting Letters to the Homefront
The Slate Belt Heritage Center is pleased to “welcome home” Slate Belt natives Kirk and Sara Brown on Thursday, July 13th @ 7:00 PM for their monthly historic presentation. This event will coincide with the Center’s recently published book: Letters to Homefront: A Love Story Between a Community and It’s WW II Soldiers. Within a collection of hundreds of letters from more than forty men across all armed services, in all theatres throughout all the years of World War II, one set of letters and post cards stands out from the rest. It describes a story of meeting, separation, connection and loss-of-youth. It’s a correspondence that stands as the embodiment of the coming-of-age of the “Greatest Generation”. Uncovered in a battered trunk as a house was being broken-up, these letters to Margaret Frable define life in the small town of Bangor Pennsylvania and the changes that came with the dislocation of war. As a result of this discovery Kirk (Margaret’s son) and Sara Brown will present a play commemorating this unique “pen-pal” relationship. They will read a collection of these war time letters preserved by Kirk’s mother that illustrate how far we’ve come but how little we’ve changed. Sara Stine Brown hails from Portland, Pa and graduated Valedictorian of the Bangor High School Class of 1968. Kirk Brown grew up in Bangor and was Valedictorian of his Bangor High Class of 1970. It was a friendly competition that grew out of their meeting while portraying the contentious leads in Bangor’s first all school musical: Bye Bye Birdie. They have been married since 1975 and together they write, design and produce plays, have remodeled their old house, volunteered at church, and built gardens together while raising two sons.
