Tape Swap Radio Rooftop Sessions
(Allentown, PA) – Tape Swap Radio is celebrating its fourth anniversary recording bands and hosting concerts in the Lehigh Valley with the launch of a new live series dubbed, ‘Rooftop Sessions.’ Tape Swap
Radio, started by Lehigh Valley residents Matt Molchany and Shamus McGroggan in 2013, has partnered with The Alternative Gallery in Allentown to record live sets from bands on the roof of the four-story Cigar Factory Artist Studios building in South Allentown. The resulting ‘Rooftop Sessions’ will feature HD video including aerial drone footage by Bethlehem's George Wacker making it the first of its kind for a regular live music series in the Lehigh Valley. The video will be shared online and the audio will be broadcasted on the radio stations which carry Tape Swap Radio: Lehigh Valley NPR station, WDIY 88.1 FM, and internet station, WLVU: The Sound of the Underground. The first ‘Rooftop Session’ will feature Lehigh Valley vaudeville/punk-inspired indie band, This Way to the Egress. The band’s four-song performance and interview is set to premiere on WDIY 88.1 FM on Friday, July 14th at 11:00 PM. Video from the session will then be available on Tape Swap Radio’s website on Sunday, July 16th The next ‘Rooftop Session’ will feature up-and coming Wilkes-Barre indie rock band Doghouse Charlie & The Buck Knife, set to premiere in August. Other fourth anniversary initiatives launched by Tape Swap Radio include a redesigned website which will now serve as an archive for all 40+ sessions that Tape Swap Radio has recorded over the past four years, a quarterly zine documenting the Lehigh Valley music scene which will debut at LV Zine Fest on August 19th at 2nd Base Vintage in Easton, and a new season of bands recorded at the Shards recording studio in Bethlehem. The ServSafe® course, conducted by Penn State Extension is being held at the Penn State Lehigh County Extension Office in Allentown on Tuesday, July 10, 2017 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and Monday, July 17 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. The exam will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 17. After attending the class sessions and passing the multiple choice exam, participants will receive a ServSafe® certificate which meets the PA Department of Agriculture’s requirement for food safety certification. The course covers information related to preventing cross contamination, safe handling of food, temperature control, cleaning and sanitization, proper storage, and pest control in addition to other relevant topics. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - July 10U.S. women win World Cup - 1999 On July 10, 1999, the U.S. women’s soccer team defeats China to win their second Women’s World Cup. The game ended in a 5-4 shootout after 120 scoreless minutes: 90 tightly played minutes of regulation dictated by the United States and 30 tense minutes of overtime largely controlled by the Chinese. The title game was played at the Rose Bowl in southern California in front of 90,185 fans, the largest crowd ever to attend a women’s sporting event. The first-ever Women’s World Cup was held in China in 1991. In the final, American midfielder and tournament top scorer Michelle Akers scored two goals–her ninth and tenth of the tournament–to lead the United States to a 2-1 win over Norway. The team returned home victorious but to little fanfare. In 1995, the U.S. again had a strong showing, placing third behind Germany and champion Norway, but still few at home took notice. The 1999 World Cup, though, was a much different story. The event was to be held in the United States, where soccer’s popularity was at an all-time high and growing, especially among young girls. The team was finally well-covered in the media and tickets were snapped up early by fans eager to see their new heroes perform. The team’s stars, newly recognizable to the public, included veteran midfielder Michelle Akers, international scoring champion Mia Hamm, midfielder Julie Foudy, midfielder/forward Kristine Lilly and defender Brandi Chastain. Heading into the Cup, the U.S. and China, both deep and talented squads with lots of international experience, were widely recognized as the favorites. The Chinese were led by striker Sun Wen, considered one of the most dangerous scorers in the tournament, and keeper Gao Hong, who was known for her athleticism. When the two teams made the final, the stage was set for a historic match. Thirty-three-year-old Michelle Akers, playing in her final World Cup for the United States, was the star of the game, controlling the midfield and funneling balls to her forwards to set up the attack. In 90 minutes of regulation, the Chinese managed only two shots on the U.S. goal. Akers who suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, collapsed after colliding with goalie Brianna Scurry and had to leave the game after the second half. The Chinese team was now rid of their foil, and the momentum swung their way during overtime. On a corner kick in the U.S. end, Chinese defender Fan Yunjie headed the ball toward the U.S. goal. Scurry couldn’t make the save, but just as the game seemed lost, defender Kristine Lilly, standing at the goal-line, headed the ball away from the cage. After a full 120 scoreless minutes, the teams entered a shootout, in which each would be given five penalty shots on goal. With the score tied 2-2 in the shootout, U.S. goalie Brianna Scurry dove left to make a save on China’s Liu Ying, giving the U.S. a chance to win. With the score tied at 4-4, all eyes were on Brandi Chastain, the last American to shoot. Chastain avoided eye contact with Gao Hong so as not to let the intimidating Chinese goalkeeper psych her out. She boomed a kick into the upper-right corner of the net, then ran and ripped off her jersey in celebration. Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. This is the only museum that tells the entire Civil War story. Local Civil War expert and the National Civil War Museum educator Dane DiFebo will host a special presentation for the tour. In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. The Blue Mt. Community Library will offer a new program this summer for children. The library will partner with Waste Management for NATURE ADVENTURE! Children entering Kindergarten through 3rd Grade are encouraged to attend this program for Storytime and outdoor activities and should dress to explore! The BMCL announces a special summer reading program called HIGH FIVE YOUR READING DRIVE! The program runs June 12 through August 12. Children entering Kindergarten through 8th Grade are encouraged to read at least 5 Library books and keep a log of their titles to earn one free book of their choosing from the Book Nook. The reading logs and information will be available at the front desk. Children 18 and under who do not have a library membership can open one, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. It is our goal to bring the basics back to children in this area. To focus on the very simple things in life that make it a better place. Showing pride in your community, having respect, showing kindness and encouraging random acts of kindness and honesty. You are welcome to attend any that you are able! THE FIRST NIGHT WILL BE JULY 6 AT 6:30 PM AND WE WILL FOCUS ON PRIDE IN YOUR COMMUNITY. We will begin the night with some words from Judge Alicia Zito about what pride in your community means and things that your child can do to show that pride and help others show that pride. While Judge Zito is speaking, your child will be given a canvas to encourage their artistic side by painting what community looks like through their eyes! Browns Presenting Letters to the Homefront
The Slate Belt Heritage Center is pleased to “welcome home” Slate Belt natives Kirk and Sara Brown on Thursday, July 13th @ 7:00 PM for their monthly historic presentation. This event will coincide with the Center’s recently published book: Letters to Homefront: A Love Story Between a Community and It’s WW II Soldiers. Within a collection of hundreds of letters from more than forty men across all armed services, in all theatres throughout all the years of World War II, one set of letters and post cards stands out from the rest. It describes a story of meeting, separation, connection and loss-of-youth. It’s a correspondence that stands as the embodiment of the coming-of-age of the “Greatest Generation”. Uncovered in a battered trunk as a house was being broken-up, these letters to Margaret Frable define life in the small town of Bangor Pennsylvania and the changes that came with the dislocation of war. As a result of this discovery Kirk (Margaret’s son) and Sara Brown will present a play commemorating this unique “pen-pal” relationship. They will read a collection of these war time letters preserved by Kirk’s mother that illustrate how far we’ve come but how little we’ve changed. Sara Stine Brown hails from Portland, Pa and graduated Valedictorian of the Bangor High School Class of 1968. Kirk Brown grew up in Bangor and was Valedictorian of his Bangor High Class of 1970. It was a friendly competition that grew out of their meeting while portraying the contentious leads in Bangor’s first all school musical: Bye Bye Birdie. They have been married since 1975 and together they write, design and produce plays, have remodeled their old house, volunteered at church, and built gardens together while raising two sons. July 20Crash Course in Celtic Song Writing Class The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) will host a Celtic song writing class to encourage creative musicians interested in developing their musical skills. Executive Director, Jayne Ann Recker states that the idea for the class came from the Celtic Song Writing Contest held at the Celtic Classic. The contest is for ameatur musicians and many inquire where they can find more instruction. The partnership with instructor Jim Carolan was the perfect fit. Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017.
