Chocolate Facts.....
- People who lived in South-east Mexico around the year 1000BC discovered the cacao tree, although whether they actually used it for anything is a different matter.
- Much later, in about 300 AD, the Mayan people began to use cacao as a form of currency, buying everything from animals to slaves with the cacao beans. You’d need around 100 beans to buy yourself a slave, which got some people spending hours making counterfeits!
- Lovers of chocolate may not be surprised by the fact that the Mayans also used their cacao beans during religious ceremonies. A bridge and groom would give each other chocolate, and there was even a cacao god which they worshipped.
- Since chocolate was used as a form of currency, many of the Mayan people simply couldn’t afford to eat it. Only the wealthy were able to eat and drink chocolate, which was harvested before being fermented and dried.
Prom
Rising Costs of the Big Dance

Going to the prom can put a fairly large dent in one’s wallet. In fact, the average family with a teenager spends nearly a thousand dollars on the dance, according to a recent prom spending survey by Visa. Take a look at the budget breakdown below.
“The Promposal”
Just as significant as the dance itself, the new “promposal” trend is an elaborate -- and often public -- way that teens ask someone to prom. Teens are spending about one third of their overall prom costs on it, totaling around $324, according to the Visa survey.
What are some popular promposal tactics? Spelling “prom” with pepperonis on pizza, airplane banner flyovers, giant duct tape posters and the jumbotron at a sporting event are just a few ways teens are “popping the question.”
Fashion First
When proms first became common, teens were encouraged to wear their “Sunday best” -- implying that they wear a nice dress or suit that they already owned. Not so anymore. For girls, going to prom is all about the dress, and finding the perfect one at the right price is no easy task. In 2012, girls surveyed by Seventeen magazine said they planned to spend $231 on average for a dress, $45 on shoes, $23 on a handbag, $32 on jewelry and $118 on hair, nails and makeup combined.
While guys typically spend less on prom clothing and accessories, they’re still shelling out heavy cash to arrive in style. Guys spent on average $127 for a tuxedo, $20 on a corsage for their dates, and $100 on other accessories, according to research from USA Today.
Cut Costs, Save for College
The steep cost of prom night is leading teens to look at alternatives to traditional prom practices. One way high schoolers are saving is by ditching typical outfits and making their own. One creative example is Duck Tape prom wear. The Duck brand Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest annually offers more than $50,000 in scholarship dollars to creative prom-goers who craft DIY prom fashions.
Over the last 15 years, the contest has attracted more than 7,000 entrants seeking the top prize of $10,000 each in college scholarships. So, in addition to recouping your prom investment --- the scholarship can help offset the skyrocketing cost of college, which has increased by 40 percent in the last decade! For more information about the contest, visit www.stuckatprom.com.
Carpooling with a big group, asking a family member to take pictures with a nice camera and creating DIY flowers (i.e. Duck Tape roses) are all ways to add a personal touch to prom, and they cost significantly less than the usual limos, professional photographers and flowers.
Setting a budget and looking for opportunities to save money can ensure prom is an amazing night that doesn’t break the bank.
March 6, 1963 - The Hula-Hoop, a hip-swiveling toy that became a huge fad across America when it was first marketed by Wham-O in 1958, is patented by the company’s co-founder, Arthur “Spud” Melin. An estimated 25 million Hula-Hoops were sold in its first four months of production alone.
March 6, 1770 - Angry colonists gather at the Customs House. in Boston. The protesters opposed the occupation of their city by British troops, who were sent to Boston in 1768 to enforce unpopular taxation measures passed by a British parliament without direct American representation. |

Three Ways to Maximize Space in a Smaller Kitchen

Ditch the compromises and maximize the space you do have to make your kitchen work for you, and all your culinary aspirations.
Cut the Fat
Do a top-to-bottom inventory of your kitchen implements to assess what you need and what you can discard or donate.
Sleek newer designs of certain appliances tend to take up less space than their clunky, older counterparts. They also offer more multi-functionality.
For example, ovens that contain a warming drawer that can be used for slow cooking, potentially eliminates the need for a standalone slow cooker. Blenders that come with food processor attachments can help you de-clutter your countertop.
A periodic audit of your kitchen can keep things running smoothly and efficiently.
Space Efficient Appliances
New appliance options designed for compact kitchens can help ensure that limited space is not a deterrent for those passionate about cooking. For example, Verona Appliances offer upscale, space efficient ranges at 24 and 30 inches with both gas and electric options.
These ranges include features like space-saving drawers for pots and pans, multi-function ovens featuring a closed-door broil, European convection fan, heavy-duty racks and a broiler pan, and multi-functional warming drawers with settings suitable for proofing dough and slow cooking. For more information, visit veronaappliances.com.
For a stylish, sophisticated option, consider the 24 inch Nostalgie Gas Range from ILVE, which comes fully equipped with the benefits of the brand’s larger ranges, but is small enough to fit into virtually any kitchen with a gas connection. Four high power BTU burners, a full width warming drawer and multi-function oven with convection bake and broil and a defrost mode can make cooking compactly a cinch.
And powerful compact cooking can also extend to cooktops. For instance, ILVE also offers a 15 inch Gas Griddle Cooktop that works with accessories like a steam cooker, bain marie warming basin, cutting board and griddle top dome to cook eclectically and with flair in a tight space. More information can be found at ilveappliances.com.
Creative Storage
Your conventional storage options will only get you so far in a compact kitchen. Stretch your concept of storage to open up a world of new possibilities.
Wall-mounted magnetic units can be a great place to store knives, pots and pans, freeing up limited cabinet space. Corkboard added to the backs of pantry and cupboard doors is ideal for hanging light utensils, recipes and notes. Shelving can be built under kitchen tables and kitchen islands. The possibilities are endless.
For happier cooking, give your compact kitchen a functional makeover.
Man conceived at 'K-Rock' concert seeks biological father via Facebook

Jette Collins, 18, shared a photo of himself holding a sign claiming that his mother met his biological father at the first ever "K-Rockathon" concert in 1996.
"I am looking for a man by the name of Jason that lived in Syracuse, NY in 1996," the sign read. "He went to the first K-Rockathon in 1996 and met a girl named Diana Collins. I am the product of that night. I am not asking for anything. Just would like to meet my biological father." Collins added that while his expectations weren't high, he hoped that the photo could gain enough traction to help him meet his father.
"I don't know if this actually works but I'm going to try it, just hoping for the best and a little luck. Help a kid out," he wrote.
The photo quickly spread around the Internet, garnering almost 10,000 shares and catching the attention of K-Rock radio host Rainman.
"Didn't meet my biological father til I was 21, I wanna help Jette out. Hits close to home for me. Please RT this," he tweeted.

March 8Free Amateur Radio Classes What is amateur radio, and what do you do with it?
Amateur radio is a fun hobby where you can talk with people across town or all over the world, even with astronauts in space, without telephone wires, cell phones or the Internet. It provides helpful communication service in emergencies, public service and community events. Amateur radio operators come from all walks of life, from all ages, men and women, students and retirees, factory workers and doctors, and all in between. We all have one thing in common: ham radio. We can tinker and experiment and build things. We can help with communications at parades and other community events. We send health and welfare messages in times of disaster; sometimes we are the only communications available. We can compete in radio contests, and we can have casual conversations with other hams worldwide. To do all this you need a license and a radio. Delaware-Lehigh Amateur Radio Club will offer a series of 9 Tuesday evening free classes, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., beginning March 8 at the Northampton County Gracedale Complex, Nazareth, We will help anyone interested in earning their entry-level FCC amateur radio license. Similar to how Volleyball is played, Fistball also allows 3 individual touches using either closed fist with a bounce allowed before each touch. As in Volleyball, when receiving a serve from an opponent, the idea is to save, set and spike the ball back into the opponent’s half of the field. USFA President, Bob Feid played a key role in bringing the Fistball Pan American Fistball Games to New Jersey during August 2015 and is committed to expanding the sport giving young people more opportunities for competitive play. Ask The Doc........ Technology can be wonderful!
![]() by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
garywilliamsdmd.com I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing. Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making. I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile. It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry. Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com. Slate Belt Senior Center
