Winter Weather Advisory Sunday The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet which is in effect from 6 am to 6 pm EST Sunday for portions of the Lehigh Valley and adjacent northwest New Jersey. Sleet accumulations less than one inch. Ice accumulations up to one-tenth inch. Precipitation is expected to begin late Saturday night. Temperatures may be warm enough for the precipitation to begin as rain, but they are expected to cool below freezing by sunrise on Sunday. A mixture of freezing rain and sleet is expected during the day on Sunday. Precipitation may transition back to rain before tapering off during the early evening hours. Ice and sleet accumulations may create slippery conditions, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks. Winds east to northeast 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures in the lower 30s.

He is perhaps best known as composer and performer of songs from Schoolhouse Rock! He worked with Miles Davis and Blossom Dearie, and his adventurous style influenced Mose Allison. During World War II, he participated in Army bands as pianist, clarinetist, saxophonist, and arranger. Bob Dorough on piano will be accompanied by Steve Berger on guitar and Pat O'Leary on bass.. History of the Viaduct in Bangor The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Sunday, February 12th @ 2:00 PM. Speaker for the afternoon will be local photographer Ernie Dietz. Mr. Dietz will be showing pictures of the Bangor “Viaduct” pre 1939 construction, during its use as a conduit span over the railroad tracks, its recent demolition and current reconstruction.
He will also speak about the materials that were and are now being used to erect the historic landmark and will reveal the little known fact about “names” that were inscribed on the top of the old side posts. Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family. The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest. Whitney Houston dies at age 48 - 2012
On this day in 2012, Whitney Houston, one of the world’s top-selling singers from the mid-1980s to late 1990s, is found dead in the bathtub of her suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Houston’s death was the result of accidental drowning; heart disease and cocaine, which was found in her system, were determined to be contributing factors. The 48-year-old pop diva, known for her soaring voice and beauty, won a total of six Grammy Awards and 22 American Music Awards (more than any other female), and was credited with influencing several generations of singers, from Mariah Carey to Jennifer Hudson. Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey, to John Houston, a theatrical manager, and Cissy Houston, a singer who backed up a variety of artists, including Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Growing up, the younger Houston sang in her church’s gospel choir. In high school, she performed background vocals on songs for Chaka Khan and others, and modeled, becoming one of the first African-American women to appear on the cover of Seventeen magazine.
In 1983, music producer Clive Davis heard Houston perform at a New York City nightclub and signed her to a recording deal. Can You Believe It?'Limbo Queen' balances drinks shimmying under SUV
(UPI) -- A Guinness World Record holder known as the "Limbo Queen" showed off her skills by shimmying under an SUV while balancing several glasses.
Shemika Charles shared video of herself limboing underneath a Toyota SUV while carrying a pair of trays each containing two drinks. "Limbo, under a Toyota, balancing drinks, and not spilling a drop," she said. Charles, a Buffalo, N.Y., resident, holds the Guinness World Record for lowest limbo at a height of 8.5 inches. (NAPSI)—In the 2016−17 school year, colleges and universities are expected to award more than a million bachelor’s degrees alone.1 Under these graduates’ seemingly identical caps and gowns are men and women with incredibly different stories, struggles and accomplishments—many don’t fit the “traditional” mold of a college graduate. For example, some of these students have full-time jobs or families to care for and some already have decades of work experience under their belts.
Adult learners account for a substantial portion of students in higher ed; the Department of Education found that in 2016, students over 24 years old accounted for nearly two-fifths of postsecondary enrollment.2 “I’ve seen firsthand the drive of working adults to return to college and the challenges they face juggling their lives and their education,” said Timothy P. Slottow, president, University of Phoenix. “The unique needs of these students matter. As a parent or full-time employee, you require flexibility and structure. As a professional, you require a career-relevant program, aligned to skills and competencies in your field. As an ambitious individual, you deserve committed faculty members with experience in their fields.” There are a few simple steps working adults considering a return to school can take to help get the most out of the experience. Slottowoffers the following advice: 1. Put your support system in place. As a working adult returning to school, remember, you are not alone. Think about who you lean on for support—significant others, children, employers, etc. Make sure your support system knows your goals and that they are committed to encouraging you along the way. 2. Do your homework before starting school. Speak to academic counselors to determine which programs best fit your goals. Talk with a financial adviser to plan for the costs of your education. You may find it easier to attend schools with access to counselors who can keep you motivated and on track. Look for an institution with resources and networks that align with your goals. 3. Leverage your personal experiences. Every college and university will view your work and educational histories differently. Consider schools that offer credit for prior learning and work experience. If you have a military background, ask about credit for your military experience. 4. Set a plan. You can work full-time AND be a full-time student. Schools with flexible but structured scheduling can allow you to attend school full-time while managing other responsibilities. Some programs may offer classes entirely online, while some will expect you to be at a campus once or more a week. Before you enroll, know what you are committing to. Utilize the flexibility of programs—night classes, online learning—to ensure that your life outside school also remains a priority. “Choosing to begin—or complete—your higher education journey as a working adult is a complicated decision,” said Slottow. “The importance of providing access and opportunity to working adults who aspire to continue their education cannot be overstated. That is why students must learn what options exist, and institutions must provide the flexibility, structure and career-relevant programs that working adult students need to succeed.” Just as numerous students will take the final step in accomplishing their goal of graduating college this school year, many more will make the first step in pursuing that goal. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. BAHS Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. NCC Lineworker Info Session
Northampton Community College (NCC) will be holding free Information sessions about its Lineworker program at 5 pm on February 13 and February 21, 2017 at Alumni Hall, Room 130 A-D, Gates Center, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. These sessions are mandatory for anyone who would like to enroll in the program.
The session will provide students with the opportunity to meet the instructors, hear about the program and its requirements, and gain information about potential resources for financial assistance for qualified candidates.
This hands-on non-credit course is taught by instructors with lineworker experience and has been popular since its inception since 2013. It prepares students for entry-level linework in the electrical and telecommunications industries.
The session will provide students with the opportunity to meet the instructors, hear about the program and its requirements, and gain information about potential resources for financial assistance for qualified candidates.
This hands-on non-credit course is taught by instructors with lineworker experience and has been popular since its inception since 2013. It prepares students for entry-level linework in the electrical and telecommunications industries.

NCC to Stage Collision
Northampton Community College (NCC) will stage a production of Collision, a play by Lyle Kessler, in which the lives of three students, a professor and a stranger collide.
Performances will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
Admission is free with a donation of a non-perishable food item for a local pantry or a contribution to the Norman R. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Reservations are suggested. Email NCC_theatre_tickets@northampton.edu or call 610-861-5524.

Lemieux to Speaking at NCC
Jamilah Lemieux, a former senior editor at Ebony magazine and current vice president of news and men’s programming at Interactive One, an online news platform, will speak at Northampton Community College (NCC) on Thursday, February 16, at 11:00 a.m., as part of the College’s observation of Black History Month. The talk is titled The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, but It Might Be Live-Streamed.
Also included on February 16 will be social justice performances by NCC students, starting at 9:30 a.m. and a faculty panel discussion at 1:30 p.m.

Then we’ll put on warm layers and snowshoes to go outside and experience a snowy winter night. Snowshoes and trekking poles will be provided. If we don’t get any snow then we will hike in our boots. The hike will be about half a mile. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Registration is required. You will be asked to specify your age and weight range when registering to determine what size snowshoe you will need. If you plan to bring your own snowshoes note that on your registration so we can offer the equipment to additional families.

BAHS Drama Department Pancake Breakfast
On Saturday, February 18, from 8am to noon, at Bangor Area Middle School, the Bangor High School Drama Department will host the fourth annual pancake breakfast with the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” Classic characters, such as Belle, the Beast, and Mrs. Potts, will transport visitors to the French countryside as they welcome guests of all ages with music, food, and activities.
In addition to restaurant-quality food and top-notch service, patrons can take advantage of a special opportunity to have their photo taken with the princess, the beast, and the enchanted characters. After snapping a photo and filling their bellies, guests can play games and participate in other activities, all while enjoying musical performances from the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”.
The breakfast will raise funds for the high school musical production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”. Performance dates are: March 3, 4 & 5, 2017. The play examines urban gentrification through an interracial couple’s relationship as they move to the inner city.

American Cancer Society Egg Hunt
The American Cancer Society's second annual community egg hunt will be held Saturday, April 1, 2:00 pm at East Bangor Park, The egg hunt will be for ages 0 to 10. An adult egg hunt will follow. They are looking for vendors, have limited space with first come, first serve for $10. Adult Pair Egg Hunt for a five-dollar donation. Several prizes will be given out. Take a picture with the Easter bunny using your own camera for a donation. Bake sale!!! Special thanks to East Bangor Fire Company and East Bangor Park Board. The family and friends of Mr. Denny Strouse are offering a $1000 scholarship in loving memory of Denny. The 7th Annual “912” Scholarship is for a graduating Bangor HS senior who plans on attending a technical school or college. The scholarship is awarded to a well rounded student with interests in academics, outdoor sporting activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking and an enthusiasm for the outdoors. The student must possess a giving spirit exemplified through community service and love for family and friends. The application process is being facilitated by Slater Family Network. Applications are in the HS Guidance office, Slater Family Network office or on the school district website front page under 2017 Scholarships or under Slater Family Network.

Allentown, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks are happy to announce their 2017 National Arena League (NAL) schedule. Featuring six home and six away games, the Steelhawks season opens at home on Sunday, March 19 th at 4pm against the expansion Dayton Wolfpack.
“After much anticipation are thrilled to be able to release our 2017 league schedule today,” stated Steelhawks General Manager Mike Clark. “The National Arena League is ready to kickoff its inaugural season, and we can’t wait to start our seventh year of play. Week one can’t come soon enough, and we look forward to seeing the Steelhawks faithful out in full force this season inside the PPL Center.” Additional schedule highlights include a Week Three matchup where the team will be making the long trip to Florida to take on the Jacksonville Sharks, former members of the AFL. Week Four brings a familiar opponent to the Valley; the Columbus Lions will be in the Hawks Nest for the Steelhawks second home game on April 9th. The Steelhawks closest rivals this year will be the Dayton (Ohio) Wolfpack and the High Country (North Carolina) Grizzlies, each of whom appear on Lehigh Valley’s schedule multiple times; LV faces Dayton four times – two home, two away, and High Country three times – one home, two away.
