Wine May Help Fight Flu Symptoms
A recent study from Washington University School of Medicine has unveiled to us all a piece of appealing news: A compound found in blueberries, black tea, and most wines could help to promote healthy gut bacteria and prevent complications from influenza infection. (And just in time for flu season.)
Since when does your gut fight the flu? As it turns out, always — we just didn’t know about it. The study examined a particular strain of gut bacteria that produces a metabolite called desaminotyrosine (DAT). Mice with higher levels of DAT in their digestive tract exhibited a more effective immune response to the flu — they actually suffered less lung damage than other mice treated with the same dose of the flu virus. The mice were unable to prevent the onset of the flu, however; both groups experienced the same level of infection. The side effects to their lungs were simply mitigated, indicating that the infection was more effectively fought off by the immune systems of mice with the helpful gut bacteria. The magic ingredient in these three otherwise unrelated foods is simple: flavonoids, which the bacteria in the study metabolized into flu-fighting DAT. Antioxidants (of which flavonoids are a type) have been rumored to have flu-fighting power before, but this study helps to provide a potential cause behind the beneficial effect. The answer has been lying in our gut all along — to not only this problem, but likely others, as well. There’s a reason probiotics and fermentation are on the rise in health communities. The tiny shelf of kombucha at your local Whole Foods has likely expanded to consume an entire aisle. People are noticing a difference in their health after using probiotics. The effects of these bacteria-promoting agents are tangible almost immediately after ingesting them and this study suggests that they stretch much further than that, as well. Regardless, lung preservation is a promising benefit. “It is this kind of damage that often causes significant complications such as pneumonia in people,” says Thaddeus Stappenbeck, senior author of the study. Pneumonia is only one of many potential complications of the flu — thankfully, we can add wine to our list of prevention techniques. Monroe Animal League Meeting

The Da Vinci Science Center and the City of Easton have announced a series of four public forums to provide residents of Northampton County with an opportunity to learn more about, ask questions, and offer feedback on the Da Vinci Science City project. The Science
Center and the City of Easton are preparing to enter into the master-planning phase, and feedback from residents will inform this important phase of the project. The Slate Belt Forum will be held 7:00-8:30 PM Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 404 Broadway, Bangor. The project update will be delivered by Lin Erickson, Executive Director and CEO of the Da Vinci Science Center, and Mayor Sal Panto, City of Easton. Each update will be followed by breakout sessions on topics to include Education and Workforce Development, Tourism, and Economic Impact. The Da Vinci Science Center announced its plans for a major expansion project in downtown Easton, tentatively called Da Vinci Science City, in November 2016. At that time, the Science Center and the City of Easton entered into a feasibility-planning period to assess the size, scope, and economic viability of the project. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - August 28Charles and Diana divorce 1996 After four years of separation, Charles, Prince of Wales and heir to the British throne, and his wife, Princess Diana, formally divorce. On July 29, 1981, nearly one billion television viewers in 74 countries tuned in to witness the marriage of Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, to Lady Diana Spencer, a young English schoolteacher. Married in a grand ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in the presence of 2,650 guests, the couple’s romance was, for the moment, the envy of the world. Their first child, Prince William, was born in 1982, and their second, Prince Harry, in 1984. Before long, however, the fairy tale couple grew apart, an experience that was particularly painful under the ubiquitous eyes of the world’s tabloid media. Diana and Charles announced a separation in 1992, though they continued to carry out their royal duties. In August 1996, two months after Queen Elizabeth II urged the couple to divorce, the prince and princess reached a final agreement. In exchange for a generous settlement, and the right to retain her apartments at Kensington Palace and her title of “Princess of Wales,” Diana agreed to relinquish the title of “Her Royal Highness” and any future claims to the British throne.

Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. At each stop along the tour the special meaning of that place will be discussed, particularly as the place relates to the topics that were covered in the initial orientation talk. The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Thursday, September 14, 2017 @ 7:00 PM. Speaker for the evening will be James Gloria, Founder/Director of Totts Gap Arts Institute. He will be screening Lois Solver’s short film: “From the Earth: A tribute to Slate Belt Heritage and Culture”. Produced by the center’s film program, the documentary gives an overview of the area’s defining industry, with interviews of both former and current slate workers (“Slaters”). Historians Melissa Hough and Mike Piersa provide a knowledgeable historical perspective adding to the archival footage. The film was selected for screening at the Greater Lehigh Valley Film Festival and the Southside Film Festival in Bethlehem. The event is free and open to the public. Families First is celebrating its 15th Anniversary serving residents in the Pen Argyl Area School District. Join their 15th Annual 5-K Race & 1 Mile Fun Walk on Saturday, September 30, 2017, rain or shine. Registration for the race/walk will begin at the Wind Gap Borough Park at 7:45 a.m. with the race starting at 9:00 a.m. Pre-registration is open until 2 pm on Friday, September 29th at a fee of $20.00 per person or $40.00 for a family with three or more registrants. On Race day Saturday, September 30th Registration fee will be $25.00 per person and $50.00 for a family with three or more registrants.
