Gordon Coming Sunday....Flood Watch Sunday & Monday
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Flood Watch for the Slate Belt and portions of New Jersey and Pennsylvania from late tonight through Monday evening The remnant low of Gordon will pass to the north and west of the region late this weekend and early in the new week. With abundant moisture out ahead of it, a prolonged period of moderate to heavy rain will fall starting late tonight and continuing into Monday with 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected throughout the watch area, but there is the potential for training of thunderstorms that could result in 5 inches or more of rain. The grounds in southeast Pennsylvania and most of New Jersey are quite saturated, so it will not take much for flooding to occur. Excessive rainfall will lead to rapidly rising water and flooding, particularly in urban areas and along small creeks and streams. In a mock teen bedroom, parents can search for hidden “drugs” and learn how to identify drug paraphernalia. Ford pardons Nixon 1974
In a controversial executive action, President Gerald Ford pardons his disgraced predecessor Richard M. Nixon for any crimes he may have committed or participated in while in office. Ford later defended this action before the House Judiciary Committee, explaining that he wanted to end the national divisions created by the Watergate scandal.
The Watergate scandal erupted after it was revealed that Nixon and his aides had engaged in illegal activities during his reelection campaign–and then attempted to cover up evidence of wrongdoing. With impeachment proceedings underway against him in Congress, Nixon bowed to public pressure and became the first American president to resign. At noon on August 9, Nixon officially ended his term, departing with his family in a helicopter from the White House lawn. Minutes later, Vice President Gerald R. Ford was sworn in as the 38th president of the United States in the East Room of the White House. After taking the oath of office, President Ford spoke to the nation in a television address, declaring, “My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over.”
Ford, the first president who came to the office through appointment rather than election, had replaced Spiro Agnew as vice president only eight months before. In a political scandal independent of the Nixon administration’s wrongdoings in the Watergate affair, Agnew had been forced to resign in disgrace after he was charged with income tax evasion and political corruption. The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Thursday, September 13th @ 7 PM. Speaker will be railroad expert, Craig Ealey who will speak about the “Anthracite Coal Trains in the Slate Belt”. This will be held in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the Anthracite Coal Regions in Penna. Mr. Ealey will show how the Lackawana and Lehigh – New England railroads played an important role in transporting soft coal to the local cement mills and Portland power plant. His will cite the peak years of hauling the coal from Scranton area to the Slate Belt. The event is free and open to the public. The Heritage Center is located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, Pa. A mobile paper shredding event is scheduled for September 15 from 9 am to 12 pm at Weona Park in Pen Argyl. This event is for Northampton County Residents only. No business or commercial shredding will be allowed. Accepted items are financial statements, medical records, investment transactions, employee payvstubs, Social Security or credit card numbers, pre-approved credit card applications, legal documents, tax forms, accounting files, cancelled checks, credit reward or bonus cards. No ring binders, plastic sheet protectors or coverings and no metal strips. DO NOT BRING junk mail, greeting cards, postcards, magazines, fliers, etc. These go in a recycling bin.
Rules of the Road for “Bikers”
On September 15 from 10 am to Noon, Northampton Community College, Officers Stokes and Horvath from the Bethlehem and Lehigh Police Departments will share the Rules of the Road, including traffic laws, hand signals, how and where to ride your bike, and proper gear and clothes for bike riding. A mobile paper shredding event is scheduled for September 15 from 9 am to 12 pm at Weona Park in Pen Argyl. This event is for Northampton County Residents only. No business or commercial shredding will be allowed. Accepted items are financial statements, medical records, investment transactions, employee payvstubs, Social Security or credit card numbers, pre-approved credit card applications, legal documents, tax forms, accounting files, cancelled checks, credit reward or bonus cards. No ring binders, plastic sheet protectors or coverings and no metal strips. DO NOT BRING junk mail, greeting cards, postcards, magazines, fliers, etc. These go in a recycling bin.
Rules of the Road for “Bikers”
On September 15 from 10 am to Noon, Northampton Community College, Officers Stokes and Horvath from the Bethlehem and Lehigh Police Departments will share the Rules of the Road, including traffic laws, hand signals, how and where to ride your bike, and proper gear and clothes for bike riding. Suggested for children 4 – 10 years old.

The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.

Combat Veteran Jenny Pacanowski will provide a special presentation for children about being in our military and serving our country on November 10.
