Coconut Oil and Your Hair
When you’re ready to grow your hair out, you want it to be longer, like yesterday. So when you hear promotors freaking out about how coconut oil can help hair grow faster, it seems worth a try. After all, coconut oil can basically do...anything?
Sorry to break it to you, but there's "no evidence" that coconut oil (or any other oil) will actually help your hair grow longer, says Gary Goldenberg, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Yes, coconut oil has moisturizing and antimicrobial (bacteria and fungus-fighting) properties that make it beneficial for skin and hair, says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., a New York City–based board-certified dermatologist and director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. But neither of those properties directly translate into faster hair growth.
If you’re struggling with thinning hair, Rogaine can help by encouraging healthy follicle growth, Zeichner says. Other derms have also previously recommended taking a hair growth supplement (such as Nutrafol or Viviscal).
Are there any benefits to using coconut oil in your hair? Actually, yes. Coconut oil has tons of fatty acids, making it a great natural conditioner, says Zeichner. And coconut oil can help reduce levels of yeast on your scalp that can lead to dandruff, he adds.
Coconut oil also has anti-inflammatory properties that help decrease local inflammation (which can mess with your hair’s ability to grow), says Goldenberg. It's also packed with lauric acid, which helps to strengthen and moisturize your hair, Goldenberg adds.
All of these properties can help hair become stronger and less prone to damage-which can promote healthier growth. But that's not quite the same as directly causing hairgrowth, obvz.
If you want to try it, make a DIY conditioning hair mask using plain yogurt, coconut oil, and honey. Let it sit in clean, wet hair, then rinse thoroughly after 10 minutes. You'll find hair that's extra-soft and smooth. You can also just apply some straight to your hair and let it sit overnight as you sleep for an intensely-hydrating experience.

Plague
Unlike smallpox, this ancient killer is still with us. Plague, which is caused by a bacterium carried by fleas, has been blamed for decimating societies including 14th-century Europe during the Black Death, when it wiped out roughly a third of the population, including in Basel, Switzerland, depicted in this painting from 1349. The disease comes in three forms, but the best known is bubonic plague, which is marked by buboes, or painfully swollen lymph nodes.
Plague is now found in animals throughout the world, particularly in the western U.S. and Africa. In September 2016, the World Health Organization reported 783 cases (including 126 deaths) worldwide from plague.
Pickup truck drives on Texas road with wheel missing
(UPI) A shocked traveler on a Texas road captured video of a man driving a severely damaged pickup truck with a missing front wheel.
Justin Seidel said he was leaving a cellphone store with a friend and his mother in the Magnolia area when they spotted the truck traveling with its hood open and a front wheel missing.
The trio decided to follow the vehicle and Seidel captured video of the pickup before it was pulled over minutes later by Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies.
"Sparks were just going everywhere under his truck," Seidel told KTRK-TV. The Conroe Police Department, which is handling the investigation, said the man was not intoxicated when he was pulled over. Investigators said the vehicle had been damaged when the driver struck a transformer.
Police said the man was not arrested, but the driver could face legal troubles if the owner of the transformer decides to press charges.
A similar situation was caught on video in late August in Crestview, Fla. A video captured by a surprised witness shows a pickup truck driving on a road with its roof partially caved-in and its driver's side door stuck wide open.

The Pennsylvania Treasury announced the launch of a new website that reunites military decorations with their rightful owners.
The new search function allows users to search their names, or the name of a loved one, to see if Treasury is holding a military decoration as unclaimed property. In addition, users can look through a photo gallery featuring some of the decorations that are in the unclaimed property vault, as well as medals that have been returned to their rightful owners. Military decorations are often reported to Treasury as contents held in a safe deposit box that has gone unclaimed or abandoned.
Since 2017, Treasury has returned 58 service decorations, some of which have been in Treasury’s custody for decades, including Purple Hearts, to their rightful owners. The department continues to search for the owners of over 500 unclaimed military awards.

Central High School integrated 1957
Under escort from the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, nine black students enter all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Three weeks earlier, Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus had surrounded the school with National Guard troops to prevent its federal court-ordered racial integration. After a tense standoff, President Dwight D. Eisenhower federalized the Arkansas National Guard and sent 1,000 army paratroopers to Little Rock to enforce the court order.
On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka that racial segregation in educational facilities was unconstitutional. Five days later, the Little Rock School Board issued a statement saying it would comply with the decision when the Supreme Court outlined the method and time frame in which desegregation should be implemented.
Arkansas was at the time among the more progressive Southern states in regard to racial issues. The University of Arkansas School of Law was integrated in 1949, and the Little Rock Public Library in 1951. Even before the Supreme Court ordered integration to proceed “with all deliberate speed,” the Little Rock School Board in 1955 unanimously adopted a plan of integration to begin in 1957 at the high school level. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) filed suit, arguing the plan was too gradual, but a federal judge dismissed the suit, saying that the school board was acting in “utmost good faith.” Meanwhile, Little Rock’s public buses were desegregated. By 1957, seven out of Arkansas’ eight state universities were integrated.

Local Game Warden Brad Kreider will speak about what is being done to help control the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Pennsylvania and what you can do to help. CWD has been found in white-tailed deer populations in the state and is spreading. It is a fatal disease in the same family as Mad Cow Disease in cattle. This program will provide important information about what is being done and the roles that hunters and landowners can play in preventing the spread of this disease. Registration is required.

The Senior Fair will be held Friday, September 28 from 10 am to 1 pm at Forks Township Community Center, 500 Zucksville Road, Eastson, PA. Free flu shots will be provided to anyone 18 and above by Lehigh Valley Health Network. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.

Celtic Cultural Alliance Announces Songwriting Competition
Celtic Cultural Alliance will be hosting a songwriting competition, sponsored by C.F. Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 31st Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The contest is open to all amateur songwriters.
Original songs must have lyrics and be performed in person on the guitar. Songs will be judged on lyrics, melody and performance by professional musicians Graham Wright of the Glengarry Bhoys, Gerry Timlin and Seamus Kennedy. The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.

Irish Soda Bread Competition
Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish soda bread contest sponsored by King Arthur at Celtic Classic on September 29, 2018. mateur bakers should bring their favorite Irish soda bread to Celtic Classic to be crowned the best by judges Jennifer Sheehan, Dean Donaher, and Suzie Farley. Contestants are asked to register prior to September 7, 2018, and some spots will be reserved for walk ups at Celtic Classic. Contestants are sked to use King Arthur flour to receive the prizes. There is no fee to enter.
The soda bread will be scored based on taste, overall appearance, creativity and texture. Celtic Cultural Alliance will be hosting a songwriting competition, sponsored by C.F. Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 31st Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The contest is open to all amateur songwriters.
Original songs must have lyrics and be performed in person on the guitar. Songs will be judged on lyrics, melody and performance by professional musicians Graham Wright of the Glengarry Bhoys, Gerry Timlin and Seamus Kennedy. The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.

Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish soda bread contest sponsored by King Arthur at Celtic Classic on September 29, 2018. mateur bakers should bring their favorite Irish soda bread to Celtic Classic to be crowned the best by judges Jennifer Sheehan, Dean Donaher, and Suzie Farley. Contestants are asked to register prior to September 7, 2018, and some spots will be reserved for walk ups at Celtic Classic. Contestants are sked to use King Arthur flour to receive the prizes. There is no fee to enter.
The soda bread will be scored based on taste, overall appearance, creativity and texture.
