    Vestige of Florence May Visit Here Next Week   
    The remains of devastating Hurricane Florence may arrive here next week according to the graphic below supplied by NOAA at 5:00am this morning..  Just how much Florence will affect the Slate Belt isn't known at the moment. However, it will be much weaker than before and most likely will be a rain maker rather than anything more. Considering the wet weather this year it likely will just be more of the same.

   I don't care if your heart is as frozen as Elsa's castle - it's about to melt into a puddle of emotions when you see the lengths this couple went to to throw their ultimate Disney dream wedding. Garrett and Jason, aka Woody and Buzz, went all out with their Disney-themed big day, and no detail was ignored. The best part? Every single guest (including their dog) dressed in costume as a different Disney character. Honestly, we can't get over it. And coming in at a close second in our books is the themed tablescapes, each based on a different Disney movie (complete with VHS tape).
   Garrett and Jason met at a friend's New Year's Eve party, and what they didn't know until their wedding day was that Garrett's parents and grandparents also met on New Year's Eve! It was meant to be. Here's what else Jason told us about their big Disney day. 
 The table decorations were all made by hand. Classic Disney VHS clamshells signified the table name and theme. The VHS clamshells were chosen since the couple both had them and watched them so much they got wore out when they were kids.  Each table had elements from the movie; it looked like the movie came to life on the table. There was at least one light-up or glow-in-the-dark element at each table to make it extra magical.
   The couple  had both been fans of Disney and Disney parks growing up. One would frequently visit his friends who worked in the park, while the other was inspired by the artists and Imagineers who influenced him to pursue a career in graphic design. But it wasn't until their first trip together to Disneyland that the love for Disney became more of an obsession.
    Family and friends must have thought they were crazy to have a costume wedding in the middle of August. But they were happily surprised that most all of their guests were really into it and dressed for the occasion, even their dog!
  The couple wanted to dress as Buzz and Woody because "You've Got a Friend in Me" is one of their favorite Disney songs, and they have known for a long time they wanted that to be the song they danced to as their first dance.  Both characters are reminiscent of each of their personalities.
          Touchdowns Against Cancer 2018   
   In support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Pen Argyl Green Knights will be passing, running, kicking and blocking to score touchdowns and to help Tackle Cancer.  They are proud to join high school football teams throughout the Colonial League and across the country in Touchdowns Against Cancer 2018
  Pledge for every touchdown they score this September 7th - 30th to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and help the 16,000 children and adolescents that will be diagnosed with cancer this year.

Why Does Climate Increase Rainfall?

The climate crisis is impacting weather patterns and the water cycle in dangerous ways. Some of these impacts might seem counterintuitive at first but make sense once you look at the big picture.
 A lot of people want to know: Why does climate change sometimes mean more rain? Here’s the answer!
The water vapor that feeds precipitation comes from two sources. One study concludes that about 60 percent of the rain and snow that falls over land comes from moisture originating from the oceans, and the other 40 percent is “recycled” over the continents. China, for example, gets most of its rain and snow from evaporation over Eurasia.
As the atmosphere gets warmer, it can hold more moisture. The intensity of downpours (and therefore the risk of floods) depends in part on how much water the air can hold at a given time.
The rate of evaporation from the ocean is increasing as the world warms. Think about heating a large pot of water on your stove – the higher you turn the dial, the faster the water evaporates. Pretty much the same thing happens with the planet, and globally, this higher rate of evaporation contributes to more extreme rain and snow events.​

   What a pity that most Americans have never eaten pizza and confuse it for the junk food advertised on television. In Italy there are laws defining pizza, which set allowances on the type of flour, tomato, mozzarella, olive oil, basil and oregano. Pizza is inherently nutritious and filling. Street corner pizza shops in Philadelphia, New York and other large cities kept close to the original idea of simple, fresh ingredients. Then came the pizza chains, which put most local shops out of business. Fresh ingredients were replaced with preservative-laden, cheap and fatty ingredients that could be mass-produced, frozen and shipped across the country. Commercial pizza is now a high-calorie, high-fat, high-sodium, low-nutrient food.

'Crack pipe' vending machines found in Long Island

​   ​(UPI) -   Police in the Long Island town of Coram, N.Y. are looking for the people responsible for putting up vending machines that appear to be crack pipes.Two of the small blue machines were found over the weekend and angry residents reported them to police, who then removed them. The machines have coin slots where would-be patrons insert $2 to get a pen-shaped device that has the items required to construct a pipe used to smoke crack cocaine.

   "They were actually repurposed tampon dispensers," said Jack Krieger, Communications Director for the Town of Brookhaven, CNN reported.
   "Who in their right mind would even do something like that -- to enable and to encourage somebody to do this?" Tony Gallo, a Coram resident, told WPIX-TV.  Police are now looking for the crack pipe vendors.
    "It is not illegal to sell the pens and it is not illegal to sell a pipe, but they are considered drug paraphernalia and they were being dispensed from a machine that was installed illegally per town code," Councilman Michael Loguercio told reporters.

Jacobsburg Environmental Center - Friday, September 14 at 6:30 to 8:00 PM 
    Join us a for a family craft night followed by a slide presentation by naturalist Brian Hardiman of the Monroe County Environmental Education Center showing snake species living in eastern Pennsylvania. Brian will explain and how to identify venomous from non-venomous snakes and discuss why many snakes are in decline. This program features live snakes! Registration is required.

Paper Shredding Event  
   A mobile paper shredding event is scheduled for September 15 from 9 am to 12 pm at Weona Park in Pen Argyl. This event is for Northampton County Residents only.  No business or commercial shredding will be allowed.  Accepted items are financial statements, medical records, investment transactions, employee payvstubs, Social Security or credit card numbers, pre-approved credit card applications, legal documents, tax forms, accounting files, cancelled checks, credit reward or bonus cards.  No ring binders, plastic sheet protectors or coverings and no metal strips.  DO NOT BRING junk mail, greeting cards, postcards, magazines, fliers, etc.  These go in a recycling bin.

​Rules of the Road for “Bikers”
   On September 15 from 10 am to Noon, Northampton Community College, Officers Stokes and Horvath from the Bethlehem and Lehigh Police Departments will share the Rules of the Road, including traffic laws, hand signals, how and where to ride your bike, and proper gear and clothes for bike riding. Suggested for children 4 – 10 years old.

Bushkill Township Open Space Tour    
    Saturday, September 15 at 9:00am to 3:00pm 
   For the past 15 years, Bushkill Township has worked diligently to preserve open space farmland and natural areas throughout the entire Township. Efforts have largely focused on the lands along Sobers Run, an Exceptional Value stream flowing from the Blue Mountain into Jacobsburg EE Center, as well as acquisition of remaining larger farms and other key parcels at risk for land development. Join Bushkill Township supervisor Jason Smith and DCNR educator Rick Wiltraut for this bus tour of acquired open space in the township. Registration is required. Fee of $20.00 includes transportation and lunch. 

Craft Show  
   There will be a Craft Show at Episcopal Apartments, 684 American Bangor Rd., Bangor on Saturday, September 15th. 9am to 2pm. Everyone is welcome!
Come support some very talented senior artists. Also featured: Raffles, Bake Table, Book Sale.  The kitchen will be selling sausage and peppers.

​Spaghetti Dinner  
​   Mission of Love Ministries will have a spaghetti dinner and basket raffle on September 15 from 4 to 7 pm.  The gift basket raffle will begin at 6:45.  Dinner will be spaghetti dinner, salad, bread, desserts and beverages.  Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Mission of Love, 555 North Main St., Bangor or by calling Terri at 610-588-3766.  Proceeds will benefit the Haiti Orphanage Project.

Calligraphy Workshop 
   Join us for a beginners calligraphy workshop at Bloom on Saturday, September 15 from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. The cost is $35 for each reservation and you’ll receive a mini-calligraphy kit that includes the tools to get started in pointed-pen modern-style calligraphy.  This workshop will cover the basics on how to use a nib and holder, create the thick and thin lines that are characteristic of pointed pen calligraphy. Space is limited to 10 students so make your reservation TODAY! This workshop will include 2 hours of instruction, 1 pen holder, 2 nibs, 1 jar of black ink, practice sheets.  REGISTER HERE

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament   
   As a follow-up to the Diocesan request, there will be Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Saturday, Sept. 15th from 9AM until 3PM at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Bangor, PA.   Sadly, in these days, we have deeply felt the ravage of sin, evil and crime that has afflicted our Church for far too long.  
   In turn, may we use this time in The Lord's presence to pray for healing and a sense of spiritual hopefulness in looking to the future.  Jesus Christ has assured us that He is with us at all times, even until the end of time.  We would encourage you to join us in prayer before our merciful God, as we seek forgiveness to replace anger and embarrassment, and peace to replace the anguish that has been brought on by the evil of abuse. ​

Flag Tray  
   Come into Bloom and create a flag tray on September 15 from 1-3 pm.  These cute trays add a nice touch to any home. Cost of $35 includes the wooden tray, all materials, and instruction. All proceeds empower women survivors of the Bloom Bangor House to heal and begin a new life. REGISTER HERE

"Gearing Up for Kindergarten" 
    The Bangor Area School District will be offering “Gearing Up for Kindergarten” beginning in October 2018. 
    The program will be held at the Washington Elementary School on Tuesdays and the Five Points Elementary School on Thursdays from October 9, 2018 to November 1, 2018 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. 
    The “Gearing Up for Kindergarten” program is intended for families with a child who will be entering kindergarten in August 2019. The classes run for an hour and a half. The program offers parent/child activities, as well as separate child preparation and parent education classes. Parent topics include brain development, parenting styles, discipline, early literacy, developing responsibility and the importance of sleep. Preschool topics include math activities, science exploration, motor development, sensory development and reading/literacy. 
   The program is free of charge, with child care being offered for siblings. Registration forms are available on the Bangor Area School District’s website or at both Washington and Five Points Elementary Schools.

41st Annual Festival of Marching Bands

McKinley dies of infection from gunshot wounds  1901

   On this day in 1901, U.S. President William McKinley dies after being shot by a deranged anarchist during the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York.
   McKinley won his first Congressional seat at the age of 34 and spent 14 years in the House, becoming known as the leading Republican expert on tariffs. After losing his seat in 1890, McKinley served two terms as governor of Ohio. By 1896, he had emerged as the leading Republican candidate for president, aided by the support of the wealthy Ohio industrialist Mark Hanna. That fall, McKinley defeated his Democratic rival, William Jennings Bryan, by the largest popular margin since the Civil War.
   As president, McKinley became known–controversially–as a protector of big businesses, which enjoyed unprecedented growth during his administration. He advocated the protective tariff as a way of shielding U.S. business and labor from foreign competition, and he successfully argued for using the gold standard of currency.
