Mission of Love Ministries will have a spaghetti dinner and basket raffle on September 15 from 4 to 7 pm. The gift basket raffle will begin at 6:45. Dinner will be spaghetti dinner, salad, bread, desserts and beverages. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Mission of Love, 555 North Main St., Bangor or by calling Terri at 610-588-3766. Atlanta falls to Union forces 1864
On this day in 1864, Union Army General William Tecumseh Sherman lays siege to Atlanta, Georgia, a critical Confederate hub, shelling civilians and cutting off supply lines. The Confederates retreated, destroying the city’s munitions as they went. On November 15 of that year, Sherman’s troops burned much of the city before continuing their march through the South. Sherman’s Atlanta campaign was one of the most decisive victories of the Civil War.
William Sherman, born May 8, 1820, in Lancaster, Ohio, attended West Point and served in the army before becoming a banker and then president of a military school in Louisiana. When the Civil War broke out in 1861 after 11 Southern slave states seceded from the Union, Sherman joined the Union Army and eventually commanded large numbers of troops, under General Ulysses S. Grant, at the battles of Shiloh (1862), Vicksburg (1863) and Chattanooga (1863). In the spring of 1864, Sherman became supreme commander of the armies in the West and was ordered by Grant to take the city of Atlanta, then a key military supply center and railroad hub for the Confederates.
Sherman’s Atlanta campaign began on May 4, 1864, and in the first few months his troops engaged in several fierce battles with Confederate soldiers on the outskirts of the city, including the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, which the Union forces lost. Celtic Poetry Contest Deadline
Celebrating the creativity, heritage, and traditions of the seven Celtic nations, Celtic Cultural Alliance announces its annual Celtic Poetry Contest for writers of all ages. Original works for the poems should reflect the Celtic culture, arts, history or literature. Personal anecdotes of family memories or travelling experiences are also encouraged.
Poems must be original in any style or length with one author. The three brackets are: 3rd through 6th grades, 7th through 12th grades, and adult. The entries must be neatly written or typed. The top poets in each category will be given a certificate and small prize and will be invited to read their poems on the stage at Celtic Heritage Hollow on September 30, 2018.

LaDuke realized in the mid-1990s that states and countries were not paying close enough attention to amphibian and reptile populations. Since no one knew the exact rattlesnake population in the state, LaDuke set up a monitoring program to make sure the state has enough rattlesnakes in its ecosystem. Registration is required.

Anthracite Coal Trains Presentation
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Thursday, September 13th @ 7 PM. Speaker will be railroad expert, Craig Ealey who will speak about the “Anthracite Coal Trains in the Slate Belt”. This will be held in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the Anthracite Coal Regions in Penna. Mr. Ealey will show how the Lackawana and Lehigh – New England railroads played an important role in transporting soft coal to the local cement mills and Portland power plant. His will cite the peak years of hauling the coal from Scranton area to the Slate Belt. The event is free and open to the public. The Heritage Center is located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, Pa. A mobile paper shredding event is scheduled for September 15 from 9 am to 12 pm at Weona Park in Pen Argyl. This event is for Northampton County Residents only. No business or commercial shredding will be allowed. Accepted items are financial statements, medical records, investment transactions, employee payvstubs, Social Security or credit card numbers, pre-approved credit card applications, legal documents, tax forms, accounting files, cancelled checks, credit reward or bonus cards. No ring binders, plastic sheet protectors or coverings and no metal strips. DO NOT BRING junk mail, greeting cards, postcards, magazines, fliers, etc. These go in a recycling bin.

For the past 15 years, Bushkill Township has worked diligently to preserve open space farmland and natural areas throughout the entire Township. Efforts have largely focused on the lands along Sobers Run, an Exceptional Value stream flowing from the Blue Mountain into Jacobsburg EE Center, as well as acquisition of remaining larger farms and other key parcels at risk for land development. Join Bushkill Township supervisor Jason Smith and DCNR educator Rick Wiltraut for this bus tour of acquired open space in the township. Registration is required. Fee of $20.00 includes transportation and lunch.

Despite being discovered in Pennsylvania nearly 50 years ago, questions remain about chronic wasting disease (CWD), which affects all species of deer, elk and moose and is fatal to all of them.
On Wednesday, Sept. 19, Rep. Marcia Hahn will be hosting a Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) seminar from 6:30-8 p.m. at the East Bath Rod and Gun Club, 7905 Township Line Road in Bath. The guest speaker will be Wayne Laroche, special assistant for CWD response with the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

CWD has been found in white-tailed deer populations in the state and is spreading. It is a fatal disease in the same family as Mad Cow Disease in cattle. This program will provide important information about what is being done and the roles that hunters and landowners can play in preventing the spread of this disease. Registration is required.

Celtic Cultural Alliance will be hosting a songwriting competition, sponsored by C.F. Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 31st Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The contest is open to all amateur songwriters.
Original songs must have lyrics and be performed in person on the guitar. Songs will be judged on lyrics, melody and performance by professional musicians Graham Wright of the Glengarry Bhoys, Gerry Timlin and Seamus Kennedy. The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.

"Protect the Tap: Clean Water Festival" will be held at the Blue Valley Farm Show Complex on Saturday, Novermber 10 from 11 am to 4 pm. The Festival is hosted by Northampton County Conservation District and Blue Valley Farm Show.

Combat Veteran Jenny Pacanowski will provide a special presentation for children about being in our military and serving our country on November 10. She will explain the value of theatre and writing in helping veterans make the transition to home after service. Let’s honor our vets by wearing red, white and blue. Suggested for ages 8 and older. The Alumni Association of NCC Fall Craft Fair will be held November 10 from 9 am to 8 pm in the Arthur L. Scott Spartan Center, Bethlehem Campus. Find unique treasures from over 100 crafters including food, wood, jewelry, glass, flower arrangements, holiday and pet items, and more at the 38th Annual Alumni Association’s Fall Craft Fair, one of the largest in the Lehigh Valley!

The play centers on a writer who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. It will be held in Norman R. Roberts Lab Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Bethlehem Campus. Admission is free with a donation of non-perishable food items and valid NCC ID. $5 without an NCC ID. Reservations suggested.
