Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm celebrates their 43rd Annual Harvest Festival on October 7th and 8th, 2017 from 10am to 5pm both days. This year’s theme is “The Forgotten Arts & Crafts”. Some heritage crafts will be shown that are new offerings to Harvest Festival, like clock making. Many old favorites will also be part of the focus such as tatting, bobbin lace making and basketry. A special area will once again be set aside for children to explore some old style crafts. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 6
First U.S. train robbery 1866
On this day in 1866, the Reno gang carries out the first robbery of a moving train in the U.S., making off with over $10,000 from an Ohio & Mississippi train in Jackson County, Indiana. Prior to this innovation in crime, holdups had taken place only on trains sitting at stations or freight yards.
This new method of sticking up moving trains in remote locations low on law enforcement soon became popular in the American West, where the recently constructed transcontinental and regional railroads made attractive targets. With the western economy booming, trains often carried large stashes of cash and precious minerals. The sparsely populated landscape provided bandits with numerous isolated areas perfect for stopping trains, as well as plenty of places to hide from the law. Some gangs, like Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch, found robbing trains so easy and lucrative that, for a time, they made it their criminal specialty. Railroad owners eventually got wise and fought back, protecting their trains’ valuables with large safes, armed guards and even specially fortified boxcars. Consequently, by the late 1800s, robbing trains had turned into an increasingly tough and dangerous job.
As for the Reno gang, which consisted of the four Reno brothers and their associates, their reign came to an end in 1868 when they all were finally captured after committing a series of train robberies and other criminal offenses. In December of that year, a mob stormed the Indiana jail where the bandits were being held and meted out vigilante justice, hanging brothers Frank, Simeon and William Reno (their brother John had been caught earlier and was already serving time in a different prison) and fellow gang member Charlie Anderson.

Book review:
Conclave
book by Robert Harris
review by Jill Silvius
Prior to checking out Conclave, I read somewhere that Robert Harris’ latest is similar to Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, so I assumed and hoped that it would be a scholarly romp through Roman Catholic history and architecture at breakneck speed. It is not – but it’s still very, very interesting, especially to someone relatively unfamiliar with the process of selecting a Pope.
The book centers on the humble figure of Cardinal Lomeli, the person responsible for overseeing the conclave and someone who is conflicted by his responsibilities to his colleagues and the former Pope, church ambitions (or lack of them), praise from others, and unsatisfying current relationship with God. It’s an appropriate choice of perspective for Harris, as it provides a unique window into the conclave itself.
As the cardinals gather, so do the subtle mysteries surrounding the Pope’s death. The fallibility of the Pope selection process, due to certain cardinals’ humanness and desires both sacred and secular, is certainly highlighted. But no matter how you feel about religion, Harris’ ending will both surprise you and make you think.

Happy Hoofers: September 18, 2018-November 13, 2018 : 8 week walking program, team with the most points wins (20 minutes =3 points; 30 minutes=4 points etc.) There is an electronic log attached that auto tallies.
Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Eat in moderation and exercise to break even! Weigh In and Weigh Out form also attached.
10,000 Steps: April 2, 2018- May 2, 2018: This is not a team walk rather it is an individual walking program where you find the average of your daily steps and set a personal goal to increase the steps each day. Strive to achieve 10,000 steps a day! To find the average; record your steps for any 3 days and divide the total by 3 and that will give you an average of steps walked per day)
Here you can find a way to compete among family members, friend groups, or with neighbors. Be creative in the rewards or prizes!
