Opioid Addiction Is a Mental Health Crisis, ........Not a Crime Wave.......

Every opioid death is preventable, because addiction is treatable. But we need to shift from a culture of shame to one of treatment. Last year, roughly 64,000 people died from a drug overdose in the United States -- the largest annual increase in drug-related deaths ever recorded in our history. Overdoses are now the leading cause of death for Americans under 50. In New York City, we lost a record 1,374 people to drug overdoses in 2016. And every single one of those deaths was preventable, because all addiction is treatable. As a nation, we're failing: failing those with substance use problems, failing those with mental health problems, and failing their friends and family. Cheap heroin and dangerously potent synthetic opioids like fentanyl are flooding our communities and killing our loved ones and neighbors, even as many people are still ashamed to seek help, afraid of being labeled as weak or undisciplined or simply criminal. And when people talk about overdoses, they still talk in hushed whispers or make ignorant condemnations that don't acknowledge the humanity of the people about whom they are talking. We need more than prison sentences or policy interventions: We need a culture change. We need to shift from a culture of shame and punishment to one of healing and wellness. And in communities, like ours in New York City, that are suffering, that shift means new policies. More than 40 percent of people who struggle with addiction also have another mental health challenge of some kind—and most of those people never end up seeking treatment or services. In many cases, people turn to substances as a way to self-medicate for these untreated illnesses, or to help them cope with the trauma or emotional distress they face in their lives. Naloxone is a life-saving medication, like an EpiPen is for allergic reactions. We have provided naloxone kits to our emergency responders, police officers and hospital or shelter staff, but the chance to save lives doesn't just lie with our first responders. Coupled with the fact that naloxone is available without a prescription at CVS pharmacies in 41 states and Washington, D.C., anyone who has someone in their life struggling with an opioid addiction can be prepared to intervene if tragedy strikes. We are saddened by the death of Kathy Melnick, a member of our Mt. Bethel district office staff who passed away suddenly last Thursday evening, Oct. 12. She was only 63 years of age and our heartfelt condolences go out to the members of her family, especially her sister and two brothers. Our district offices were closed Tuesday at noon and Wednesday all day in observance of the sudden loss of our beloved staffer, whom we will miss greatly. Bangor Elks Halloween Parade Tonight
The Bangor Elks Halloween Parade will be held tonight at 7:00pm. This year’s theme is “Let’s Go To The Movies”….Your favorite movie character. The sign-up deadline was Saturday, October 14th at 3:00pm. Late signups will be held at the Bee Hive Community Center on Thursday, October 19th at 5:00pm. All participants will meet and line up at the Bee Hive Community Center and Merchants Bank, 191 Branch. Group and float participants will be notified a few days before the parade with their line-up information. Candy may be handed out to the children by walking along side your float or group. Please do not throw candy from your float or car! Prizes will be awarded after the parade at the Elks Lodge on Broadway, Hot dogs and drinks will be served. NCC 8th Annual Talking Peace Justice Conference Talking Peace, a Peace and Justice Conference, is today at Northampton Community College. It is the eighth annual Peace and Justice Conference to take place at the College and will focus on 50 years of peace and justice activism in the United States. Events and displays will encourage empathy across cultures and appreciation of the roots of today’s activism from 50 years ago to coincide with NCC’s 50th anniversary. The event will begin in the Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall on the Bethlehem Campus at 9:30 – 11 a.m. The Keynote speaker will be announced as the event nears. The Bangor Lions Club is hosting a fundraiser at Wendy’s in Wind Gap on Wednesday, November 8 from 5:00 to 8:00pm. The club will receive a portion of all sales, eat in or carry out. The Bangor Lions Club is a non-profit organization that raises money for sight conservation, diabetes awareness, the hearing impaired, White Cane, Center for Vision Loss, local food banks and leader dog for over 60 years. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 19Victory at Yorktown 1781 Hopelessly trapped at Yorktown, Virginia, British General Lord Cornwallis surrenders 8,000 British soldiers and seamen to a larger Franco-American force, effectively bringing an end to the American Revolution. Lord Cornwallis was one of the most capable British generals of the American Revolution. In 1776, he drove General George Washington’s Patriots forces out of New Jersey, and in 1780 he won a stunning victory over General Horatio Gates’ Patriot army at Camden, South Carolina. Cornwallis’ subsequent invasion of North Carolina was less successful, however, and in April 1781 he led his weary and battered troops toward the Virginia coast, where he could maintain seaborne lines of communication with the large British army of General Henry Clinton in New York City. After conducting a series of raids against towns and plantations in Virginia, Cornwallis settled in the tidewater town of Yorktown in August. The British immediately began fortifying the town and the adjacent promontory of Gloucester Point across the York River. General George Washington instructed the Marquis de Lafayette, who was in Virginia with an American army of around 5,000 men, to block Cornwallis’ escape from Yorktown by land. In the meantime, Washington’s 2,500 troops in New York were joined by a French army of 4,000 men under the Count de Rochambeau. Washington and Rochambeau made plans to attack Cornwallis with the assistance of a large French fleet under the Count de Grasse, and on August 21 they crossed the Hudson River to march south to Yorktown. Covering 200 miles in 15 days, the allied force reached the head of Chesapeake Bay in early September. The Bangor Area School District Wellness Committee wants to extend an invitation to the families in our school community to participate in the following healthy activities throughout the school year. These are programs that the faculty eagerly awaits and competes in each year. Happy Hoofers: September 18, 2018-November 13, 2018 : 8 week walking program, team with the most points wins (20 minutes =3 points; 30 minutes=4 points etc.) There is an electronic log attached that auto tallies. Project Zero: November 20-January 2, 2018: The goal of this program is to maintain your weight throughout the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Pen Argyl leaf collection will begin October 23, there will be no collection the week of November 20, collection resumes on November 27 and will end December. Please note leaves will not be picked up if they have sticks, acorns or animal feces in the piles. These materials can cause malfunctions with the machinery and become dangerous to our employees. Avoid putting leaves out 2 days before rain or foul weather, especially in the hilly areas of the Borough. During storms leaf piles can clog storm basins and cause water damage to streets and private property. Whenever possible, park away from leaf piles so the workers can maneuver the equipment and clean up more thoroughly. Admission is free, but monetary donations and supplies to help rebuild Puerto Rico after the devastation caused by Hurricane María will be accepted. Ávila was named the 2015 PA Professor of the Year, the first Latino to ever receive the award. Ávila’s performance is part of Zoellner’s innovative Notations series, which includes conversations with highly-respected representatives from a variety of literary genres. The Trouble with My Name is a high-octane, hilarious one-man show. The Trouble with My Name examines the issues of language, race and social justice in an eye-opening performance where Ávila engages the audience as he tells the story of his life and reads poetry that illustrates what it means to be the American of the future. His show embraces the diversity of a nation whose history is rich and colorful. His message transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity and geography. Ávila, a renowned poet and novelist, achieved international recognition when his bestselling novel "Different" became an award-winning motion picture, "Miente," which was screened in over a dozen countries. The popular art gift shop will be open throughout the holiday season, beginning Friday, November 24, 2017 through Friday, January 5, 2018. Participation to sell artwork and handcrafted items is open to all Pocono Arts Council members. Membership is an affordable $39 per year for individuals or $29 for seniors. Member artists who would like to be featured in the Holiday Store must submit an application by the deadline on Friday, November 10, 2017. Space is reserved on a first come, first served basis with payment. The Holiday Store application is available online at www.poconoarts.org under the ARTSPACE Gallery tab/Exhibitions or it may be picked up in the gallery. Artists must arrange to have their art delivered to the gallery and hung/displayed on Monday, November 20 or Tuesday, November 21 from 10AM-3PM. The PoconoArts staff will manage the store 10AM-4PM, Monday through Friday, with evening and weekend hours handled by volunteers. Fees for participation are:
