Columbus Controversy
As the classroom rhyme goes, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492 and discovered America. But there is more to the story of the explorer we celebrate with a federal holiday on the second Monday of every October. As historians have continued to learn and write more about the real life of Christopher Columbus, controversy has arisen over the validity of honoring the explorer as a hero.
Like many European explorers, Christopher Columbus encountered indigenous people throughout his voyages. Singularly focused on his mission to find riches and conquer new lands, Columbus and his teams treated the indigenous groups they came across as obstacles to their greater mission.
There are three main sources of controversy involving Columbus’s interactions with the indigenous people he labeled “Indians”: the use of violence and slavery, the forced conversion of native peoples to Christianity and the introduction of a host of new diseases that would have dramatic long-term effects on native people in the Americas.
Historians have uncovered extensive evidence of the damage wreaked by Columbus and his teams, leading to an outcry over emphasis placed upon studying and celebrating him in schools and public celebrations.
On his first day in the New World, he ordered six of the natives to be seized, writing in his journal that he believed they would be good servants. Throughout his years in the New World, Columbus enacted policies of forced labor in which natives were put to work for the sake of profits. Later, Columbus sent thousands of peaceful Taino “Indians” from the island of Hispaniola to Spain to be sold. Many died en route.
Those left behind were forced to search for gold in mines and work on plantations. Within 60 years after Columbus landed, only a few hundred of what may have been 250,000 Taino were left on their island.
Eventually, his methods and actions caught up with Columbus. A number of settlers lobbied against him at the Spanish court, accusing Columbus of mismanagement. In 1500, the king and queen sent in a royal administrator, who detained Columbus and his brothers and had them shipped home.
Although Columbus regained his freedom and made a fourth and final voyage to the New World, he had lost his governorship and much of his prestige.
This historical record has cast Columbus into the shadow of enormous consequence. Protests at Columbus Day parades, efforts to eliminate him from classroom curricula, and calls for changing the federal holiday have all followed. Whatever your views of the “Columbus controversy,” this holiday continues to be an important way for all Americans to learn more about the Age of Exploration and the enormous transformations it provoked.

Volunteers Needed for Squirrel Census in Central Park
(UPI) A group of researchers are seeking volunteers in New York City to conduct a census of the squirrel population in Central Park.The Squirrel Census, which has conducted
Eastern gray squirrel counts in other cities since 2012, announced it is seeking volunteer squirrel-spotters to help map the rodents of Manhattan's most famous park Oct. 6-20.
The researchers, whose fields include animal science, cartography and design, said Central Park will be their biggest project to date.
"It just made sense to give ourselves the biggest challenge that we could," Jamie Allen, creator of the Squirrel Census, told AMNY. "We consider it the moon of parks."
Allen said the collected data will be used to create an interactive multimedia map of the park.
"It's a unique way to look at the urban greenspace," Allen said. "You will see [the park] through the eyes of the squirrel and you will learn the personalities of the Central Park squirrels."

Great Chicago Fire begins 1871
On this day in 1871, flames spark in the Chicago barn of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary, igniting a two-day blaze that kills between 200 and 300 people, destroys 17,450 buildings, leaves 100,000 homeless and causes an estimated $200 million (in 1871 dollars; $3 billion in 2007 dollars) in damages. Legend has it that a cow kicked over a lantern in the O’Leary barn and started the fire, but other theories hold that humans or even a comet may have been responsible for the event that left four square miles of the Windy City, including its business district, in ruins. Dry weather and an abundance of wooden buildings, streets and sidewalks made Chicago vulnerable to fire. The city averaged two fires per day in 1870; there were 20 fires throughout Chicago the week before the Great Fire of 1871. Despite the fire’s devastation, much of Chicago’s physical infrastructure, including its water, sewage and transportation systems, remained intact. Reconstruction efforts began quickly and spurred great economic development and population growth, as architects laid the foundation for a modern city featuring the world’s first skyscrapers. At the time of the fire, Chicago’s population was approximately 324,000; within nine years, there were 500,000 Chicagoans. By 1893, the city was a major economic and transportation hub with an estimated population of 1.5 million. That same year, Chicago was chosen to host the World’s Columbian Exposition, a major tourist attraction visited by 27.5 million people, or approximately half the U.S. population at the time.
In 1997, the Chicago City Council exonerated Mrs. O’Leary and her cow. She turned into a recluse after the fire, and died in 1895.

Jayne Mansfield (1933-1967) “Blond bombshell” star of stage and screen. Born Vera Jayne Palmer into a large Pen Argyl family, she grew up in Phillipsburg before moving on to Hollywood. She currently resides under a heart-shaped tombstone in Fairview Cemetery. Played by Cheryl Melnick.
“Grammy” Grace Martin (1833-1917) Gutsy progenitor of the Martin/Jeffrey/Allen/Masters/Hill/Herring families, she emigrated from Cornwall, England and was one of Pen Argyl’s first settlers. Known for her kindness to new immigrants, she healed the sick and no time for thieves Played by Cheryl Statham.
Joseph “Joe” DellAlba (1924-2011) A Wind Gap boy who started in the quarries as a kid and grew up to be a great civic leader. After WWII, he ran Valerie Fashion from 1951-1994, became Wind Gap’s mayor and supported many service organizations. He personified “giving back” to the community.

Haunted Heritage Show at SBHC
The ghosts of the Slate Belt past return to tell their tales. This year’s haunting features:
Moses Tunda Tatamy (c. 1690-1760) Lenape translator, negotiator, and promoter of peace between the Native Americans and European settlers; his 300 acre farm in the Forks of the Delaware become the center for the Village of Tatamy. Played by Perry Morris.
Jayne Mansfield (1933-1967) “Blond bombshell” star of stage and screen. Born Vera Jayne Palmer into a large Pen Argyl family, she grew up in Phillipsburg before moving on to Hollywood. She currently resides under a heart-shaped tombstone in Fairview Cemetery. Played by Cheryl Melnick.
“Grammy” Grace Martin (1833-1917) Gutsy progenitor of the Martin/Jeffrey/Allen/Masters/Hill/Herring families, she emigrated from Cornwall, England and was one of Pen Argyl’s first settlers. Known for her kindness to new immigrants, she healed the sick and no time for thieves Played by Cheryl Statham.
Joseph “Joe” DellAlba (1924-2011) A Wind Gap boy who started in the quarries as a kid and grew up to be a great civic leader. After WWII, he ran Valerie Fashion from 1951-1994, became Wind Gap’s mayor and supported many service organizations. He personified “giving back” to the community.

Col. Herbert R. Frey (1908-1988) The loyal Army Air Corps colonel who flew to St. John’s Cemetery and placed a wreath on the grave of his departed buddy, Lt. Harold Dietz, every Memorial Day for 50 years. Played by Jim Paynter.

Jacobsburg Speaker Series
Dr. Megan Rothenberger will speak on "Assessment of Dam Removal" Friday, October 12 at 7:00pm to 8:00pm. The proposed removal of multiple small dams along the lower Bushkill Creek has provided a valuable opportunity for multidisciplinary teams of Lafayette college faculty and students to evaluate the benefits and risks of stream restoration. This research is especially important since fewer than 10% of dam removals in the last century were accompanied by scientific study. Megan Rothenberger, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Science at Lafayette College, will present a summary of the ongoing pre-dam removal research, which includes almost 8 years of water quality monitoring, surveys of freshwater mussels, analysis of heavy metals in legacy sediments and associated toxicity assays to assess potential risks to organisms downstream. Registration is required.

Halloween themed Parents' Night Out will be held October 12 at the Slate Belt Y from 6-9pm. Let the Y staff take care of the children for a night while the parents enjoy a night off. Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth. Sondheim’s semi-autobiographical musical turns back the clock on friendship and the high price of success.

It marks the period of "No Time" on the Celtic calendar, when "the veil is thinnest between worlds" and souls living here and in the "otherworld" converse freely, seeking the light that will always overcome darkness.

A Holiday Bazaar will be held December 1 in the Wind Gap Middle School Gymnasium vendor will be selected on a first-come, first-served fashion. No two vendors of the same business will be permitted without prior approval in an effort to avoid duplication. Electric is NOT guaranteed. Vendors may only take up one table, unless they have purchase more space. Table space is available at a cost of $20.00 per table. Doors to the public will be open from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
