Waking Up Through the Night

Picture
Waking up in the middle of the night can be a real drag. One minute you’re dreaming about an amazing breakfast sandwich, the next you’re wide awake, disoriented, and dismayed to see that it’s only 3 A.M.
If this sounds a lot like your sleep experience, should you be concerned?
It might feel like “good sleep” means not waking up at all until your alarm goes off, but that’s not true. Waking up at night can be normal. It’s the cause and frequency that help determine whether or not there’s actually a problem.
A loud noise outside, anxiety, needing to pee, and medical conditions like sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and an overactive thyroid can all cause nighttime wake-ups.
It’s really common to wake up briefly in certain stages of sleep, which you may or may not even remember.
When you wake up and can’t get back to sleep, you might be tempted to watch the minutes tick away on a clock. Try not to do this, since worrying about not getting enough sleep could just make it harder to sleep, Dr. Peters says. Instead, he suggests setting an alarm before bed each night and covering it up so you can’t check the time: “If you wake at night and don't hear the alarm, it doesn't matter what time it is. You get to go back to sleep. This will reduce the likelihood that the awakening will start the mind racing and contribute to insomnia.”
Once you feel like a solid chunk of time has passed and you’re still not tired, get out of bed and do something relaxing, Dr. Peters says. Read a book, listen to music, or work on a puzzle.
The biggest red flag surrounding nighttime wake-ups is feeling excessively sleepy during the day.If you constantly feel wildly tired during the day no matter how many or few times you wake up at night, that is worth looking into. Excessive daytime sleepiness can be a sign of various issues, like sleep apnea, a condition in which your breathing repeatedly stops and starts while you sleep.
Whatever is causing your excessive daytime sleepiness needs to be addressed. See a doctor for help.
The bottom line? There’s no magic number of nocturnal awakenings that is inherently problematic. Context matters, as do your energy levels throughout the day.Look at the big picture view of your nocturnal awakenings, Dr. Okeke-Igbokwe says. Consider how many times you are waking up each night, yes, but also how long you’re awake, how much total time you spend awake each night, and how you feel the next day.
While frequent nighttime wake-ups might be no issue for some people, they can leave others feeling wretched. Don’t just accept feeling tired all the time—work with your doctor to figure out what’s interrupting your rest.

Devastating Infectious Diseases
Ebola

Picture
Though rare, Ebola virus disease (EVD) is an often fatal infection caused by one of the five strains of the Ebola virus. The virus spreads very rapidly, overcoming the body's immune response and causing fever, muscle pain, headaches, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Some who contract Ebola also bleed from the nose and mouth in the late stages of the disease — a condition known as hemorrhagic syndrome.   The most recent outbreak of Ebola began in West Africa in 2014 and is now considered the largest such outbreak in history. As of April 2016, approximately 11,300 people had died in the outbreak, with 28,652 suspected and confirmed cases of the virus reported, according to the CDC.
The Ebola virus is spread from person to person through bodily fluids, and a healthy person can contract the virus by coming into contact with an infected person's blood or secretions or by touching surfaces (like clothing or bedding) containing these fluids.

2.62-carat diamond found at  state park

Picture
(UPI)  A Colorado woman visiting Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas found a 2.62-carat diamond in just 10 minutes of searching.   The 71-year-old woman, who did not want her identity revealed, said she and her family were only looking for diamonds for about 10 minutes at the park when she found the ice white diamond on the surface.
The grandmother said she was shocked when she took her find to the park's Diamond Discovery Center, where it was identified.
More than 33,100 diamonds have been found since Crater of Diamonds became a state park in 1972.

Book review
"The Book of M"book by Peng Shepherd review by Jill Silvius.
The premise of The Book of M is intriguing: what would happen if, suddenly, all across the world, people’s shadows started to disappear - and with their shadows, their memories?
Unfortunately, the novel suffers from multiple names, multiple storylines - in short, a bit too much!  The tantalizing scenario of an all-encompassing, incomprehensible “Forgetting” gets lost in - what, exactly? An apocalyptic adventure? A riff on Peter Pan? A philosophical debate about
the importance of remembering those we love and those who love us? As Shepherd’s first novel, The Book of M tries to achieve a lot.
Orlando Zhang (Ory) and wife Max remain at Elk Cliffs Resort after their friends Paul and Immanuel’s wedding. In its aftermath, only they remain, trying to survive. They don’t know how extensive the Forgetting is, or whom it has claimed, or how it’s transmitted. Cut off from the rest of the
world, they can only forage and hope and wait.
Until Max loses her shadow. And disappears while Ory is out hunting.  Ory’s search for Max, and Max’s thoughts as recorded on a tape-recorder Ory fashions into a necklace for her (just in case, to remind her who she is), form many chapters of the book. But The Book of M throws other narratives into the mix: the tale of an amnesiac, the mysterious “One Who Gathers” and has an elephant-shaped shadow; Olympics-bound archer Mahnaz Ahmadi and her sister Rojan; Hemu Joshi, the first to have his shadow disappear; and others.
Once the reader knows everyone’s background, everyone is eventually bound for the same place, which is cloaked in gossip: New Orleans. Their stories eventually converge, but until they do, it’s often challenging to remember which survivor group is where and who’s within each group.
One group fights the Red King, while another is fleeing white-clad Transcendence fanatics (who want to worship the shadowless).  Clashes of armies are juxtaposed with Max’s gradually dwindling recollections.
The premise of the Forgetting, and the associated potential horrors of the shadowless “misremembering” and tragically, magically, creating items that shouldn’t exist, is wondrous. Imagine alligators the size of cruise ships and a hurricane turning a city into a fishbowl! But lovers of sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and adventure may all feel a bit disappointed. The Book of M’s mishmash of genres and apparent goals can make a reader question if he or she has a touch of the “Forgetting” (as in Who’s that character again?)
And the M in the title? It’s not Max, or only partly so…

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 4

Sputnik launched  1957

The Soviet Union inaugurates the “Space Age” with its launch of Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite. The spacecraft, named Sputnik after the Russian word for “satellite,” was launched at 10:29 p.m. Moscow time from the Tyuratam launch base in the Kazakh Republic. Sputnik had a diameter of 22 inches and weighed 184 pounds and circled Earth once every hour and 36 minutes. Traveling at 18,000 miles an hour, its elliptical orbit had an apogee (farthest point from Earth) of 584 miles and a perigee (nearest point) of 143 miles. Visible with binoculars before sunrise or after sunset, Sputniktransmitted radio signals back to Earth strong enough to be picked up by amateur radio operators. Those in the United States with access to such equipment tuned in and listened in awe as the beeping Soviet spacecraft passed over America several times a day. In January 1958, Sputnik’s orbit deteriorated, as expected, and the spacecraft burned up in the atmosphere.
Officially, Sputnik was launched to correspond with the International Geophysical Year, a solar period that the International Council of Scientific Unions declared would be ideal for the launching of artificial satellites to study Earth and the solar system. However, many Americans feared more sinister uses of the Soviets’ new rocket and satellite technology, which was apparently strides ahead of the U.S. space effort. Sputnik was some 10 times the size of the first planned U.S. satellite, which was not scheduled to be launched until the next year. The U.S. government, military, and scientific community were caught off guard by the Soviet technological achievement, and their united efforts to catch up with the Soviets heralded the beginning of the “space race.”
The first U.S. satellite, Explorer, was launched on January 31, 1958. By then, the Soviets had already achieved another ideological victory when they launched a dog into orbit aboard Sputnik 2. The Soviet space program went on to achieve a series of other space firsts in the late 1950s and early 1960s: first man in space, first woman, first three men, first space walk, first spacecraft to impact the moon, first to orbit the moon, first to impact Venus, and first craft to soft-land on the moon. However, the United States took a giant leap ahead in the space race in the late ’60s with the Apollo lunar-landing program, which successfully landed two Apollo 11 astronauts on the surface of the moon in July 1969.
