On October 22, 2019, the Fr. DeNisco Council (#3862) of the Knights of Columbus located in Bangor PA, hosted speakers from the Keystone Warriors, Paul Spurgin, executive director and Krissy Dunkle, Operations Manager. At this meeting, it was their pleasure to present this organization with a donation of $800 raised through their summer car washes. Brothers Bill Hutnik and Joe DeFranco coordinated the car wash program making this donation possible. The Keystone Warriors is a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization located in Eastern Pennsylvania that primarily aids our post-9/11/2001 enlisted men and women from all branches of the United States Military in dealing with the often difficult transition to daily civilian life. They provide a wide range of direct assistance to veterans and their families tailored to their specific needs including groceries, financial assistance, and in some cases, transportation, furniture and even housing. Five Week Intensive Art Workshop for Teens
Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30pm to 8:30pm, November 5 to December 12 at Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center. Learn from a professional artist who will teach unique painting and drawing processes! The students in the workshop will create a group installation piece inspired by nature and ecological issues for display at Jacobsburg's visitor center. Participants will also take part in environmental science lessons designed to inform and inspire the artwork. Artist in residence Melissa Perhamus will be leading the workshop along with center educators. Examples of her work can be viewed at her website listed below. This workshop is for teens ages 13-18 and attendance is required at all 10 sessions. The workshop is free. Registration is required. The workshop will start November 5 and continue each Tuesday and Thursday evening until December 12, excluding the week of Thanksgiving. Borrow snowshoe equipment to use on Jacobsburg’s trails this winter! Snowshoes are available for folks of any age or shoe size, including small children. Snowshoes will not be made available during times of insufficient snow cover, usually at least six inches of snow is required. Flu Prevention Ideas
The state Department of Health is urging residents to get a flu vaccine before the end of the month to protect against this potentially deadly illness. Last year, the Commonwealth reported 122,000 cases of the flu and 258 deaths. While vaccination is considered the best method of prevention, residents are also encouraged to practice healthy habits like covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, frequently washing your hands during flu season and remembering to disinfect commonly touched objects such as door knobs, light switches, countertops, cell phones and computers. Residents who become sick with the flu will experience symptoms such as fever, headache, tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and body aches. Anyone suffering from the flu should stay home and rest to avoid spreading the illness and aid in their own recovery. Additional information about staying healthy during flu season is available here.

New Main Street Market
Like a Breath of Fresh Air

The re-opening of Main Street Market in Bangor is refreshing news since people, unfortunately, have become accustomed to seeing “going out of business” signs in many communities, including downtown Bangor.
When the Bank of America closed in Bangor two years ago, that was a shocker. What began as the First National Bank many years ago was now gone, making one wonder who’s next.
When news of the Main Street Market closing hit social media and elsewhere, it was as though Bangor had been dealt, not just another shocking setback, but one that hits where it really hurts.
Unless you have been squirreled away in a quarry hole for the past few years, you know that Main Street Market is not just another grocery store, it is THE grocery store for many residents in the Bangor area. Thus, local officials worked quickly with Lanta Bus to transport area residents to nearby stores. After all, food is a commodity that one needs everyday.
But just as quickly as Lanta came to the rescue, Nicole and Duane Smith, former managers of the Portland Market, stepped up to reopen the Market in Bangor.
“It was really by chance,” Nicole said. “We wanted to go back in business years ago, so I said to my husband, it might be a long-shot so why don’t we try to get in there.”
The Smiths ran the Portland Market in the early 2000s, but were forced to close after three floods made it impossible to continue. Currently, they are working toward reopening the Main Street store with a refurbished parking lot that has been milled and paved and a roof that has also been repaired.
Once open, they’re planning a delivery service which is a huge plus for their neighbors in the area.
Inside, “they’re going to see a nice, clean store,” Duane said. They also hope to continue to sell meat from local farms and they plan to have a butcher on hand “seven days a week.” Their tentative hours are 8-9 weekdays, 8-8 Saturdays and 8-6 on Sundays.
“The only day we will probably close is Christmas Day,” Duane said. They are also planning a soft opening for November 1 “if everything goes well.”
After meeting with the Smiths, it’s obvious that they are committed to providing quality and friendly service to the area. It will be like a breath of fresh air when shoppers open their doors for the first time and are greeted by the friendly faces of long-time store employees.

Bangor Ski Club Sign-ups
The Bangor area school district for hold ski and snowboard club sign-ups on Wednesday, November 6 and Thursday, November 7 for students in 5th through 12th grade. Sign-ups will be held at middle school Auditorium at 7 PM. This is the only time for students to sign up for the club. A parent and child must attend one of these meeting nights in order to participate in the club.
Can’t make it? Contact one of the advisers before the meeting date, not after. On-line payments must be completed on time, no exceptions.

Hiking is more than putting on a pair of boots and walking in the woods. It’s a lifelong recreational activity that can increase one’s stamina, endurance, and athleticism. It’s also the basis of numerous other recreations including backpacking, orienteering, and geo-caching.
On Wednesday, November 6 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, learn how to enable your students to discover Penn’s Woods through an interdisciplinary set of lessons created by the PA Bureau of State Parks. Lessons focus on health, fitness, and trip planning; map reading and identifying local trails; forest ecology as well as nature journaling. The lessons address several PA Physical Education & Health academic standards as well as standards for Geography, Science & Ecology, and the Humanities. The course is designed for teachers and outdoor educators and covers 6.5 Act 48 hours. Rivalry History Presentation
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Sunday, November 10th @ 2:00 PM. Speaker for the afternoon will be Pen Argyl Historian, Walter Cole who will present a program on the “History of the Bangor-Pen Argyl 100th Football Game” .
Mr. Cole is a retired History teacher from Pen Argyl High School and will include the traditions, changes, interesting stories that have occurred over the hundred year period. He will also include events leading up to the games, during the games and also after the games. In preparation for the 100th Game, Mr. Cole conducted over twenty interviews. Former and present Pen Argyl Cheerleaders, Football players, Coaches, Superintendents and principals were interviewed along with former Athletic and Band Directors. These interviews are now public on the penargylathletics.org website.
This event is free and open to the public. Come and share your own memories of this deep rooted rivalry. The Heritage Center is located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA. For additional information please contact: Karen Brewer @ 484-894-5661.

Saturday, December 7, 2019, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Bloom Creative Studio. The Needle Felt Snowman at Bloom Creative Studio (BCS) makes a great decoration or gift for the holiday season. The cost is $25 per person; Bloom Creative Studio is donating $5 from each one to the Relay for Life of Lehigh Valley East (LVE).
If you are a registered participant of the LVE Relay the $5 can be allocated to your personal goal and by going to Bloom we are also giving back as Bloom Creative Studio is a non-profit. There will be a basket raffle and light refreshments. REGISTER HERE
