The holidays are just around the corner and that means it's time for the Annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive Event hosted by Portland Lodge No. 311 F&AM. This year's event will be held at Charter's Banquet Facility at Plainfield Township Fire Company, located at 6480 Sullivan Trail in Wind Gap, PA on Saturday, November 24th from 1-4pm.
With the donation of a new, unwrapped toy for a child 0-12 years old, we invite you to join us for a magical afternoon as we help our U.S. Marines deliver Christmas to children in need throughout Northampton County.
Santa will arrive by helicopter at 1:00pm, courtesy of Mr. Nolan Perin. The U.S. Marines & Chesty, the Marine Bulldog Mascot will be escorted to the event by Margaret the Pink Fire Truck and local police & volunteer fire companies. Welcome the true heroes of Christmas, the U.S. Marines, to the event and thank them for their service with a United States flag donated by County Councilman Matt Dietz. There will be FREE 4x6 photos in the Rockin' Photobooth with Santa. The Mav oya'la Clan Costume Club will join us so that you can meet & greet your favorite characters from the Star Wars Saga. Enjoy Christmas Music by Dice Productionz, an interactive Lionel Train Display and a huge Lego Display.

Prescription Drug Coverage to Cover 17,000 More Seniors
Legislation to expand eligibility for the state’s PACENET prescription drug coverage program passed the House last week and is moving through the state Senate. Up to 17,000 Pennsylvania seniors are expected to benefit from this expansion.
House Bill 270 would increase the annual maximum income limits in the PACENET program to $27,500 for a single person and to $35,500 for a married couple. Current maximum income requirements for the PACENET program, which covers those individuals with incomes exceeding PACE maximums, are $23,500 for a single individual and $31,500 for a married couple annually.
Additionally, the bill would allow two new pharmacy-based programs to be developed under the PACE program to assist seniors in monitoring their prescription drug usage.
This eligibility expansion would be the first since 2004, and it is funded by proceeds from the Pennsylvania Lottery.
PennDOT Improves Customer Care Website
To make it easier to report concerns on state roads, PennDOT has modernized its online customer care center. The new website will include new mapping capabilities, optional photo uploads and a mobile-friendly interface.
Concerns are sorted into several categories: road or bridge conditions; removing debris from a roadway; traffic, signs or signals; ongoing roadwork or projects; or general questions and concerns. Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county, municipality, street name and state route number, which can be found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition, a description of any familiar landmarks are helpful for PennDOT to locate the problem area.
As of Sept. 30, the previous Customer Care Center had nearly 45,000 concerns submitted this year, according to PennDOT, with more than 96 percent of those concerns being resolved.

New York City subway opens 1904
At 2:35 on the afternoon of October 27, 1904, New York City Mayor George McClellan takes the controls on the inaugural run of the city’s innovative new rapid transit system: the subway.
While London boasts the world’s oldest underground train network (opened in 1863) and Boston built the first subway in the United States in 1897, the New York City subway soon became the largest American system. The first line, operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT), traveled 9.1 miles through 28 stations. Running from City Hall in lower Manhattan to Grand Central Terminal in midtown, and then heading west along 42nd Street to Times Square, the line finished by zipping north, all the way to 145th Street and Broadway in Harlem. On opening day, Mayor McClellan so enjoyed his stint as engineer that he stayed at the controls all the way from City Hall to 103rd Street.
At 7 p.m. that evening, the subway opened to the general public, and more than 100,000 people paid a nickel each to take their first ride under Manhattan. our revered founder, who passed peacefully this last June 18th. Then, at 7:00pm, they will open their moving Samhuinn ceremony (Bill's favorite of the Celtic seasonal celebrations). It marks the period of "No Time" on the Celtic calendar, when "the veil is thinnest between worlds" and souls living here and in the "otherworld" converse freely, seeking the light that will always overcome darkness.

The Slate Belt Y will be holding its Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 27 from 5-6:30 in the back parking lot. If you or any of the community groups you partner with are willing to support this free community event, please call the Y (610) 881-4470 and register your trunk. This annual event allows children a safe place to trick or treat. Please consider decorating a trunk to help make this event a success for our community. Great opportunity for scouts, school groups, or individuals to get involved!

Penn State Extension 4-H in Lehigh and Northampton Counties will host two 4-H National Youth Science Experiment events featuring the Code Your World challenge on Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4, 2018.
