Order at slatebeltrivalry.com Annual Heritage Award![]() The Slate Belt Heritage Center, is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for its' "Annual Heritage Award". The purpose of the award is to acknowledge individuals who have performed exemplary acts that promote and preserve the culture and heritage of the Slate Belt. Candidates may be an individual or group and can be nominated by themselves or by another party. 1. Initiative Award: Applicant who has performed exemplary actions in promoting and preserving the Slate Belt heritage through in-kind actions. This means acts that do not necessarily involve monetary donations but can be unpaid service for a preservation cause. 2. Architectural Award: Applicant who is saving or conserving a historic building, place or artifact where restoration is authentic to preservation. 3. Special Focus Award: Applicant who is saving or conserving tradition or a body of knowledge. That individual who contributes to educational information via exhibits, documentation, internet, archival, etc. Consideration is given to projects with: 1.) A specific start and end date. 2.)Whether the project meets Professionally accepted preservation and/or scholar standards. 3.)Whether the project is considered “complete” with goals and how they were achieved. 4.)Whether the project had a significant impact with before and after photographs for proof of information and/or proof that a historic piece would have been otherwise lost if the nominee had not completed the project. Nominations will be accepted this fall and will be reviewed in January of each year. The awards will be presented at a special program in June. One prize will be awarded with the possibility of one per category depending on committee’s review of candidates. Nominations should include a description of entry, photos (if applicable), and any pertinent documentation. The Heritage Center retains the right to exhibit and/or publish the application materials, including photographs. Applications for those not chosen will be held on file, indefinitely, for future consideration. Interested parties may obtain an application at the Heritage Center (Sundays 1-3), at local municipal offices or by contacting Karen Brewer @ 484-894-5661 2019 Business Person of the Year Carl Tolino of Tolino Vineyard Carl and his four children have done an outstanding job in business and service. Since 2013, Carl and his four children, Mandy, Carl, Liz & Mark have grown a breathtaking vineyard with excellent wine, opened in Stroudsburg and Easton Public Market as well as hold Friday night community events on the property and even fundraising events. Carl also has Tolino Fuel Service which employs over 65 local full and part time positions and is dedicated to the local community. 2019 Volunteer of the Year Melissa Hough Slate Belt Heritage Center Melissa has been a driving force behind preserving a historical legacy for the residents of the entire Slate Belt. As President of the Slate Belt Heritage Center she works countless hours obtaining grants, cataloging relics and mementos, setting up displays, speaking at numerous clubs, attending workshops and regional meetings in an effort to enhance the historical aspect of the Slate Belt. Melissa assisted the Borough of Bangor in acquiring “Historical Status” and also assisted in developing a “Walking Historical” venue. Members, family, friends and the community are welcome to help honor Carl and Melissa on November 7 at the Broadway Pub, 62 Broadway, Bangor PA. Medicare open enrollment period![]() The state Department of Aging is reminding beneficiaries of the Medicare open enrollment period is open and continuing through Saturday, Dec. 7. During this time, you may make changes to your current Medicare coverage, as well as join, switch or drop Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Coverage plans. Pennsylvania offers a free health insurance counseling program, APPRISE, through the local Area Agency on Aging. APPRISE counselors are specially trained staff and volunteers who can provide objective, easy-to-understand information at no cost to you. They can help you understand Medicare eligibility, enrollment, financial assistance programs and coverage options, among other Medicare-related topics. Additionally, Rep. Emrick is pleased to announce that Medicare/Medicaid Assistance will be offered at his Slate Belt Office on Tuesdays from 1-3pm beginning Oct. 15 through Dec. 3. Domestic Violence Awareness Month![]() With approximately 95,000 victims seeking services through the Commonwealth’s domestic violence programs each year, the state House unanimously approved House Resolution 467 designating October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior used to establish power and control over an intimate partner, causing both physical and emotional harm. Victims may be subjected to abuse, harassment, threats, vandalism, trespassing, burglary, theft and stalking. As one of the most chronically underreported crimes, domestic violence affects men and women in all racial, ethnic, religious, educational, social and economic backgrounds. The Needle Felt Snowman at Bloom Creative Studio (BCS) makes a great decoration or gift for the holiday season. The cost is $25 per person; Bloom Creative Studio is donating $5 from each one to the Relay for Life of Lehigh Valley East (LVE).

October 22Blue Mt. Library Fundraiser![]() On Tuesday, October 22, The Slate Pub in Pen Argyl will sponsor a Fundraiser for the Blue Mountain Community Library. Quiet Valley Spooky Days on the Farm![]() Stroudsburg (PA) – At Spooky Days on the Farm, on Friday October 25 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday October 26 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Sunday October 27 from 1:00 to 5:00, take a tour of our historic farm and enjoy a look at the stranger side of Quiet Valley. During the daytime it will be more family focused with some not so spooky ghost stories, Halloween songs and dances, and take a horse-drawn wagon ride (weather permitting). There will be a children’s craft area and some light refreshments available for purchase.
After dark things will get spookier as guests can visit the Witch on the Bridge, if they dare! Help solve a “murder” that took place on the farm in the 1800s. This is a true who-dun-it, playing detective type of activity! Visit the murder scene, meet with possible suspects, pay close attention for clues and name the evildoer if you can! Spooky Days on the Farm will take place rain or shine; Schedule subject to change; Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children (3-12). Bach Choir Concert:![]() The Bach Choir of Bethlehem welcomes Canada’s Theatre of Early Music as their Gala artist to present the American premiere of the Coronation of King George II on Saturday, October 26 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allentown.
The ensemble is led by Danny Taylor, frequent Bach soloist and a much in-demand countertenor. In creating the coronation, Taylor and his musicians deliver orchestral and choral excellence that includes Renaissance to Baroque to present-day compositions. |
