Mobile Mammography Coach

Picture

The Lehigh Valley Cancer Institute will introduce and provide tours of its new Mobile Mammography Coach during a ceremony at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest John and Doroty Morgan Cancer Center on Thursday, October 18 at 11 am. The coach offers a convenient way for women to have 3D screening mammograms where they’re located.
The coach is using a Peplink EPX 15 Cellular SD-WAN router, which allows for real time imaging and incredible reliability on a mobile coach as if the clinicians were providing the mammogram in the hospital. Lehigh Valley Health Network is the first to offer EPX in the United States for mobile health care and the first in the world for mobile mammography.
Speakers will include Brian Nester, DO, MBA, FACOEP, Lehigh Valley Health Network’s President and Chief Executive Officer; Priya Sareen, MD, Imaging Director, Breast Health Services, Lehigh Valley Cancer Institute; and Lori Alfonse, DO, Surgical Oncology, Lehigh Valley Cancer Institute.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only about two-thirds of women over 40 have had a mammogram within the past two years. Research shows annual screening mammography is the best tool for early detection of breast cancer. The five-year survival rate for women with breast cancer detected at the earliest stages is close to 100 percent.
Among the reasons many women give for not getting a mammogram is they don’t have health insurance. Other barriers include lack of awareness, fear of discomfort from the procedure, and reluctance to get bad news. Access to a mammography center is another big issue. That’s why the new mammography coach is critical for reaching women at work, at school and in other locations so that they can get a mammogram with the same technology used in offices and hospitals. It will also be a visual reminder of the importance of mammograms and caring for breast health.

Devastating Infectious Diseases
Measles

Picture
One of the most contagious of all infectious diseases, measles (also called rubeola) causes a characteristic red rash on the skin. Other symptoms of this viral disease are similar to that of the common cold.   Measles is so contagious that 90 percent of the people who simply stand near someone with the virus will become infected, according to the CDC.
"Near means within 50 feet or entering a room where the measles person had been in — even two hours after the infected person left the room," Aileen M. Marty, professor of infectious diseases at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and member of the WHO Advisory Group on Mass Gatherings, told Live Science.
Luckily, there's an easy way to defend yourself against the measles virus: Get vaccinated. Out of ever 1,000 people vaccinated against measles, 997 will never get the disease.

Police use Doritos to lure 'mini horse' sized pig home

Picture
(UPI)  Police in California said they used a bag of Doritos to capture a junk food-loving pig "the size of a mini horse."
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office said Deputies Ponce and Berg were dispatched from the Highland Station on Sunday on a report of a pig "the size of a mini horse" running loose through a neighborhood.
A video from the incident shows the deputies using Doritos chips from their lunch to create a trail for the big porker to follow home.
"We were able to put him back in and secure the gate. It was fun!" Deputy Ponce said.

Crack Down on Hazing
Legislation that seeks to better ensure the safety of students on college campuses by cracking down on hazing passed the House this week.
Senate Bill 1090 is a comprehensive overhaul of the state’s anti-hazing law to give law enforcement better tools to prosecute hazing-related activities and to encourage those nearby to call for assistance for someone who may need help.
Specifically, the bill would increase penalties for those involved in hazing; require schools to have policies and reporting procedures in place to stop hazing; and ensure that parents and students are provided with information related to the issue. The legislation also would establish clear parameters on hazing for organizations such as fraternities and sororities.
The legislation is named in memory of Tim Piazza, a Penn State student who died as a result of hazing in 2017 and was denied medical care for hours. The measure now heads back to the Senate for concurrence.

New Law Enhances Training
To help ensure the state’s animal cruelty laws are enforced in the fairest way possible, legislation has been signed into law to strengthen the training and oversight of Humane Society police officers.
Act 77 of 2018 increased initial and annual training hours for Humane Society police officers, and requires the training to include the proper procedure to file citations and warrants, including when and how to contact other law enforcement.
Other provisions of the new law require training in farm operations and biosecurity, including at least one on-site visit to a working commercial farm operation. Any organization that employs Humane Society police officers will be subject to the state’s Right-to-Know Law.
Additionally, a Humane Society police officer must be a resident of Pennsylvania. If the appointment of a Humane Society police officer is revoked in one county, it would be revoked in all counties.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 19

Victory at Yorktown  1781

Hopelessly trapped at Yorktown, Virginia, British General Lord Cornwallis surrenders 8,000 British soldiers and seamen to a larger Franco-American force, effectively bringing an end to the American Revolution.
Lord Cornwallis was one of the most capable British generals of the American Revolution. In 1776, he drove General George Washington’s Patriots forces out of New Jersey, and in 1780 he won a stunning victory over General Horatio Gates’ Patriot army at Camden, South Carolina. Cornwallis’ subsequent invasion of North Carolina was less successful, however, and in April 1781 he led his weary and battered troops toward the Virginia coast, where he could maintain seaborne lines of communication with the large British army of General Henry Clinton in New York City. After conducting a series of raids against towns and plantations in Virginia, Cornwallis settled in the tidewater town of Yorktown in August. The British immediately began fortifying the town and the adjacent promontory of Gloucester Point across the York River.
General George Washington instructed the Marquis de Lafayette, who was in Virginia with an American army of around 5,000 men, to block Cornwallis’ escape from Yorktown by land. In the meantime, Washington’s 2,500 troops in New York were joined by a French army of 4,000 men under the Count de Rochambeau. Washington and Rochambeau made plans to attack Cornwallis with the assistance of a large French fleet under the Count de Grasse, and on August 21 they crossed the Hudson River to march south to Yorktown. Covering 200 miles in 15 days, the allied force reached the head of Chesapeake Bay in early September.
