Order at slatebeltrivalry.com Domestic Violence Awareness MonthWith approximately 95,000 victims seeking services through the Commonwealth’s domestic violence programs each year, the state House unanimously approved House Resolution 467 designating October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior used to establish power and control over an intimate partner, causing both physical and emotional harm. Victims may be subjected to abuse, harassment, threats, vandalism, trespassing, burglary, theft and stalking. As one of the most chronically underreported crimes, domestic violence affects men and women in all racial, ethnic, religious, educational, social and economic backgrounds. More information about domestic violence and services available to help victims is available here Jacobsburg Speaker Tonight - Avian Malaria Dawn Fariello will present “Urbanization and Avian Malaria Infection in Passerine Birds” on Friday, October 18 at 7:00pm. Avian malaria, caused by three genera of parasites, is a well-documented disease of birds with considerable impacts on some avian host populations.
It is cosmopolitan in distribution and well-sampled among some regions, but is relatively under-sampled in the temperate northeast of the United States. Dawn Fariello presents her investigations on the combined effects of urbanization and avian malaria distribution and how these impacts are important for continued preservation of avian species. Registration is required. Register for community programs online at http://events.dcnr.pa.gov Cash Prizes for Pumpkin Carving Contest Octoberfest this year will be held at Bangor Memorial Park (90 Eisenhart Blvd) on Saturday and Sunday, October 19th (4 pm to 8:30 pm) and October 20th (4 pm to 8 pm).
Individuals and/or groups are needed to enter in the themed, carved pumpkin display. Maybe you own a business and you have a group of employees that would like to get together to carve some pumpkins to enter in the contest. You can pick whatever theme you would like. There are tons of carving themes on the internet. There have been some interesting themes in the past such as Harry Potter, classic cars, Toy Story, Elvis, Peanuts, etc. Do you play a sport? Maybe your group wants to carve pumpkins to show support for that sport? The only cost to enter is that you have to buy your own pumpkins. A group of themed pumpkins has to have a minimum of 2 pumpkins in their themed display but you can have as many as you want to carve on display. There will be CASH prizes awarded for the top 3 best group of themed, carved pumpkins. Prizes are $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place and $25.00 for 3rd place. Please email [email protected] for a form and to read the complete rules for entering. In addition, the scarecrow making booth is in need of old stockings and clothing (pants, jeans, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, hats, etc. They can have holes in them. You can drop them off at the Borough Building or at The Little Corner Cafe. Octoberfest is a 2 day event (which takes place at night) which features food, craft/gift vendors, a moonbounce, pony rides, scarecrow making, pumpkin carving/painting, hay ride and costume contest with prizes. Our main feature is the train ride that will take you around the park to see all of the carved, lit up Jack-O-Lanterns on display. Vendor Spaces are still available. Volunteers are needed to help in all aspects of the event from collecting tickets at booths, running booths, helping to set up and clean up the pumpkin displays and working in the concession stand. For more information or to volunteer, contact Debbie Smith at [email protected] (prefer email) or call 610-751-7692. Rep. Emrick honors Jana Morris Last week Rep. Joe Emrick presented Jana Morris, Founder and Executive Director of Recovery Revolution, with a House citation recognizing her remarkable work as a community leader and advocate in the fight against opioid addiction.
She has taken significant action to change the stigma surrounding substance abuse disorders and cooperates with local police departments to shepherd at-risk individuals into treatment instead of prison. Emrick thanks Jana for showing me the facility and her contributions to our community. "It was a privilege to recognize all that she continues to do," he said.
