Slaters-Knights Field Hockey Moved to Northern Lehigh
The Pen Argyl vs Bangor field hockey game postponed yesterday will be played Saturday on Northern Lehigh's artificial turf starting at noon.  Local fields remain very wet thanks to 2.30 inches of rain that fell Thursday. Most area fields were already soggy from over a foot of rain in September.

Slate Belt Ghosts Return......

Picture
Joseph "Joe" DellAlba played by Marc Blau gave a captivating performance during Ghosts of the Slate Belt Thursday night at  the Slate Belt Heritage Center's  interesting and nostalgic  presentation of "This Is Your Life." DellAlba lived in Wind Gap and started working in the quarries as a young boy and grew up to be a great civic leader.  After WWII, he ran Valerie Fashion from 1951-1994, became Wind Gap’s mayor and supported many service organizations. He personified “giving back” to the community. PHOTO GALLERY Sbtt Photo Larry Cory

Save your Butter Wrappers

Picture
Butter is the backbone of nearly everyone’s diet—like it or not. After all, it’s a great addition to every dish, from breakfast toast to gourmet desserts. And if you’re anything like us, you go through at least three to four sticks every single week. Leaving those used butter wrappers sitting in your trash can, however, isn’t doing your wallet any favors.
Those scrapped pieces of paper still have a tiny—yet usable!—amount of leftover butter on them, as it turns out. Although it may not seem like much at first, using every last drop of butter can add up and save you tons of money down the road.
So instead of tossing them out, place those extra wrappers in a plastic bag and store them in the freezer. They could come in handy for various small cooking jobs later on, such as greasing cake or bread pans. Smearing a butter wrapper along the bottom of a skillet can provide enough grease for light pan-frying or sautéing, too. What’s more, you can prevent a wide array of frozen foods (from baked goods to burgers) from sticking together by separating them with your used butter wrappers.
And here’s another tip: While these little hacks apply to all butter wrappers, they are especially effective for those peeled off of room-temperature sticks. In fact, experts say you don’t need to refrigerate butter at all.
Sure, your kids and your spouse might think you’re crazy for storing away those used butter wrappers. But trust us: A little frugality can go a long way.

Devastating Infectious Diseases
Pertussis

Picture
Also known as whooping cough, pertussis is a bacterial infection of the respiratory tract caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. As its name suggests, the telltale symptom of whooping cough is severe coughing.
Pertussis is particularly dangerous for babies, who can experience apnea, or pauses in breathing, as a result of the prolonged coughing fits brought about by the disease, according to the CDC. About 50 percent of infants who become sick with whooping cough need to be hospitalized, and 25 percent of those who are hospitalized develop lung infections, according to the CDC. Most people who died from whooping cough (87 percent) between 2000 and 2012 were babies less than 3 months old.

Kitten survives 17-mile drive in engine compartment

Picture
(UPI)    An Idaho man who heard a sound coming from the engine compartment of his car said a kitten survived his 17-mile drive home from work.Brian Ray said he didn't hear meowing coming from under the hood of his car until he arrived home from work and enlisted the help of his wife, Amanda, to find the cause.
"It's crazy to have driven 17 miles ... and not have noticed that I had a cat under the hood," Brian Ray told KBOI-TV.
"The kitten dove under the engine block and we couldn't get her from below and we couldn't get from above," he said. "And, so we tried to hatch this plan."
Ray used a carjack to lift the front-end of the car so Amanda could get underneath to look for the kitten.  Amanda Ray said she quickly caught a glimpse of the feline, which had a red spot on her face that appeared to be an injury.  "I was honestly afraid she was bleeding internally," Amanda Ray said. "And, that when I got her out, she was going to be like gushing blood."
The Rays were eventually able to free the kitten and take it to the Simply Cats shelter, where veterinarians identified the injury.  "We later learned that that's called degloving," Simply Cat's Outreach Coordinator Kate Beyer said. "And, it is exactly that. It's when your frontal lip gets detached from your gum line."
The shelter said the kitten, dubbed Briar, will soon undergo surgery to treat the injury.
"This is a reminder to bang on your hood when in cold weather!" the shelter said in a Facebook post. "Cats and other small critters like to climb in for warmth."

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - October 13

White House cornerstone laid  1792

The cornerstone is laid for a presidential residence in the newly designated capital city of Washington. In 1800, President John Adams became the first president to reside in the executive mansion, which soon became known as the “White House” because its white-gray Virginia freestone contrasted strikingly with the red brick of nearby buildings.
The city of Washington was created to replace Philadelphia as the nation’s capital because of its geographical position in the center of the existing new republic. The states of Maryland and Virginia ceded land around the Potomac River to form the District of Columbia, and work began on Washington in 1791. French architect Charles L’Enfant designed the area’s radical layout, full of dozens of circles, crisscross avenues, and plentiful parks. In 1792, work began on the neoclassical White House building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue under the guidance of Irish American architect James Hoban, whose design was influenced by Leinster House in Dublin and by a building sketch in James Gibbs’ Book of Architecture. President George Washington chose the site.
On November 1, President John Adams was welcomed into the executive mansion. His wife, Abigail, wrote about their new home: “I pray heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house, and on all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but wise men ever rule under this roof!”
