Hough has been a driving force behind preserving a historical legacy for the residents of the entire Slate Belt. As President of the Slate Belt Heritage Center she works countless hours obtaining grants, cataloging relics and mementos, setting up displays, speaking at numerous clubs, attending workshops and regional meetings in an effort to enhance the historical aspect of the Slate Belt. Melissa assisted the Borough of Bangor in acquiring “Historical Status” and also assisted in developing a “Walking Historical” venue. The Pennsylvania Game Commission is reminding motorists to slow down and stay alert for deer on the roadways.
Deer become more active in the autumn with the lead-up to their fall breeding season, commonly referred to as the “rut.” Autumn also sees a number of people taking part in outdoor activities that might flush deer from forested areas or briar thickets, and deer are more actively feeding to store energy for winter months. Add to this the end of daylight saving time, which results in more traffic between dawn and dusk, and the chances of vehicle accidents with deer increase significantly. Drivers can reduce their chances of collisions with deer by staying alert and better understanding deer behavior. Be especially alert in “Deer Crossing” areas, and remember deer tend to travel in family groups, so if you see one deer, more are likely coming. To report a dead deer for removal from state roads, motorists can call the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation at 1-800-FIX-ROAD. If the deer is on a locally owned road, contact the appropriate municipality.

Home Heating Assistance
LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps individuals and families pay their heating bills through home heating energy assistance grants. It also provides crisis grants to help in the event of an emergency or if a resident is in danger of losing his or her heat due to broken equipment, lack of fuel or termination of utility service. The income eligibility guidelines for LIHEAP are set at 150% of the federal poverty income level. For example, the income limit for an individual is $18,735; for a couple, the limit is $25,365; and for a family of four, it is $38,625. New Main Street Market
Like a Breath of Fresh Air

The re-opening of Main Street Market in Bangor is refreshing news since people, unfortunately, have become accustomed to seeing “going out of business” signs in many communities, including downtown Bangor.
When the Bank of America closed in Bangor two years ago, that was a shocker. What began as the First National Bank many years ago was now gone, making one wonder who’s next.
When news of the Main Street Market closing hit social media and elsewhere, it was as though Bangor had been dealt, not just another shocking setback, but one that hits where it really hurts.
Unless you have been squirreled away in a quarry hole for the past few years, you know that Main Street Market is not just another grocery store, it is THE grocery store for many residents in the Bangor area. Thus, local officials worked quickly with Lanta Bus to transport area residents to nearby stores. After all, food is a commodity that one needs everyday.
But just as quickly as Lanta came to the rescue, Nicole and Duane Smith, former managers of the Portland Market, stepped up to reopen the Market in Bangor.
“It was really by chance,” Nicole said. “We wanted to go back in business years ago, so I said to my husband, it might be a long-shot so why don’t we try to get in there.”
The Smiths ran the Portland Market in the early 2000s, but were forced to close after three floods made it impossible to continue. Currently, they are working toward reopening the Main Street store with a refurbished parking lot that has been milled and paved and a roof that has also been repaired.
Once open, they’re planning a delivery service which is a huge plus for their neighbors in the area.
Inside, “they’re going to see a nice, clean store,” Duane said. They also hope to continue to sell meat from local farms and they plan to have a butcher on hand “seven days a week.” Their tentative hours are 8-9 weekdays, 8-8 Saturdays and 8-6 on Sundays.
“The only day we will probably close is Christmas Day,” Duane said. They are also planning a soft opening for November 1 “if everything goes well.”
After meeting with the Smiths, it’s obvious that they are committed to providing quality and friendly service to the area. It will be like a breath of fresh air when shoppers open their doors for the first time and are greeted by the friendly faces of long-time store employees.

The chart above shows the forecasted high temperatures for the ten-day period that began yesterday. There is also a slight chance of some snow or snow flurries tonight and tomorrow which could possibly accumulate in the Poconos to our north. There is a 40% chance of some snow showers on Monday and a 30% chance on Tuesday.

Pennsylvania Farm Bill
A grant program to support specialty crops grown by Pennsylvania farmers is now open.
Crops eligible for the state grant program include those not eligible under the federal specialty crop grant program, and those designated as high-priority crops in the state: hemp, hops, hardwoods and honey, as well as barley, rye and wheat for distilling, brewing and malting.
Eligible projects must enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of specialty crops. Examples could include increasing child and adult nutrition knowledge and consumption of specialty crops; improving efficiency and reducing costs of distribution systems; developing new and improved seed varieties and specialty crops; pest and disease control.
A percentage of funds will be designated to projects in rural communities with at least 20% of the population below the federal poverty line.

With 10 inches of rain falling during October according to data from the Town Topics weather station, the Slate Belt experienced its ninth month in 10 with above average rainfall. In 2018, 11 of the 12 months experienced above average rainfall. Last year we totaled 80.28 inches of rain which is 33 inches above normal.
This year 61.31 inches of rain have fallen which is well above above normal with two months left in the year. If we don’t get another drop of precipitation this year we would still finish 2019 with a surplus of almost 16 inches.
The fact that 20 of the past 22 months have had above average rainfall may seem like some mundane piece of trivia – however - it is not.

Rivalry History Talk
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Sunday, November 10th @ 2:00 PM. Speaker for the afternoon will be Pen Argyl Historian, Walter Cole who will present a program on the “History of the Bangor-Pen Argyl 100th Football Game” .
Mr. Cole is a retired History teacher from Pen Argyl High School and will include the traditions, changes, interesting stories that have occurred over the hundred year period. He will also include events leading up to the games, during the games and also after the games. In preparation for the 100th Game, Mr. Cole conducted over twenty interviews. Former and present Pen Argyl Cheerleaders, Football players, Coaches, Superintendents and principals were interviewed along with former Athletic and Band Directors. These interviews are now public on the penargylathletics.org website.

Christmas Bazaar
The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar on Fri., Nov. 22nd, from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sat., Nov. 23rd, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. There will be a "White Elephant" ONLY sale on Mon., Nov. 18th - Thurs., Nov. 21st from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The bazaar consists of handcrafted Christmas gifts and ornaments, hand-knitted items, estate jewelry, baked goods, jams & jellies.

Family Night
Family Night at Jacobsburg on Friday, November 22 at 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm will be called "My Life as a Turkey", Bring your family along to Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center for a craft activity and movie night. We’ll be screening "My Life as a Turkey", the account of an experiment by naturalist Joe Hutto to raise a brood of wild turkey poults.
Learn about the secret world of turkeys through Joe's retelling of the relationship that he formed with them during his life as a turkey. Craft time starts at 6:30pm and the movie starts promptly at 7:00pm. Registration is required as supplies and seating are limited. Friday, November 22nd from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM Bloom will hold KID’S NIGHT OUT - a PAINT NIGHT for KIDS. Free Movie in Bangor
Due to technical difficulties over the summer, the Bangor Park Board was not able to show the FREE movie that was scheduled. (Mary Poppins Returns).
They will be showing that movie on November 23rd at the Borough Administration Building (Beehive building). Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the movie begins at 7 pm.
Please bring a blanket, pillows, etc as you will be sitting on the floor. There is a limited amount of space due to fire code so the earlier you arrive the better. A limited number of chairs will be available.

With the support of many local businesses and organizations we have been able to make this event a great success! Once again, we are reaching out to in hopes that you can assist us to achieve our goals.
They are currently seeking donations of prizes; such as gift cards, goods, or made up baskets to use for the raffles. Toys For Tots
Toys for Tots event will be held Sunday, December 1, 2019 at 1 PM – 4 PM. The holidays are just around the corner and that means it's time for the Annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive Event hosted by Portland Lodge No. 311 F&AM. This year's event will be held at Charter's Banquet Facility at Plainfield Township Fire Company, located at 6480 Sullivan Trail in Wind Gap, PA on Sunday, December 1st from 1-4pm.
With the donation of a new, unwrapped toy for a child 0-12 years old, they invite you to join them for a magical afternoon as they help our U.S. Marines deliver Christmas to children in need throughout Northampton County.
The U.S. Marines & Chesty, the Marine Bulldog Mascot will be escorted to the event by local police & volunteer fire companies. Welcome the true heroes of Christmas, the U.S. Marines, to the event and thank them for their service with a United States flag donated by County Councilman Matt Dietz. There will be FREE 4x6 photos in the Rockin' Photobooth with Santa. The Mav oya'la Clan Costume Club will join us so that you can meet & greet your favorite characters from the Star Wars Saga. Enjoy Christmas Music by Dice Productionz, an interactive Lionel Train Display.
Children can enjoy a variety of activities presented by Girl Scout Troops, Waste Management, Ignite Fitness, Bangor Daycare, Just Dance Dance Studio. In addition, there will be Gifts from Santa, Vendors & MORE

Saturday, December 7, 2019, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Bloom Creative Studio. The Needle Felt Snowman at Bloom Creative Studio (BCS) makes a great decoration or gift for the holiday season. The cost is $25 per person; Bloom Creative Studio is donating $5 from each one to the Relay for Life of Lehigh Valley East (LVE).
If you are a registered participant of the LVE Relay the $5 can be allocated to your personal goal and by going to Bloom we are also giving back as Bloom Creative Studio is a non-profit. There will be a basket raffle and light refreshments. REGISTER HERE
Holiday Bazaar
A Holiday Bazaar will be held Dec. 7 in the Wind Gap Middle School Gymnasium vendor will be selected on a first-come, first-served fashion. No two vendors of the same business will be permitted without prior approval in an effort to avoid duplication. Electric is NOT guaranteed. Vendors may only take up one table, unless they have purchase more space. Table space is available at a cost of $25.00 per table. Doors to the public will be open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
A completed registration form must be submitted to Spring Shank at shank.spring@penargylsd.org or mail to 501 W. Laurel Avenue, Pen Argyl, PA 18072. Checks should be made payable to Families First. An email confirmation will be sent when registration and payment are received.
Important Information: All vendors and participants will be provided with one table and one chair. No other items will be provided by Families First or the Pen Argyl Area School District. Participant set up will begin at 8:15 am on Saturday. All items, decorations, and displays must be kept within the space designated to you. Vendors will be assigned a table upon payment. No food or drink sales will be permitted, as Families First will be running the snack stand. All participants are expected to clean up their table and area at the end of the event.
