Preventing Peanut Allergies
Peanut allergy is among the most common allergies and is also harder to outgrow compared to milk and egg allergies. In recent years, it may seem as though the allergy is affecting more individuals than before.
"It really is almost an epidemic," says Dr. Scott Sicherer, who is the director of the institute. Even with anecdotal reports from school nurses, he tells CNBC that it is impossible to deny an increase in cases in recent years. This, he believes, suggests that an environmental factor may be at play.
One theory, known as the hygiene hypothesis, suggests that allergies in children have been triggered by too much cleanliness. Given the increase in antibiotic use and the reduced time spent playing outdoors, it is possible that the immune system becomes overprotected and starts attacking the wrong thing.
While the connection is yet to be established, it does seem to hint that peanut allergies may be preventable to some degree. "Don’t bathe babies all the time," recommends Dr. Hugh Sampson, also from the institute. "Try not to wash off all the bacteria because some is protective."
Another theory focuses on the role of epigenetics in the development of the problem. Exposure to toxic pollutants, tobacco smoke, dietary fat etc. in early life, research suggests, could increase sensitivity and make individuals more prone to developing allergies.
Since it is hard to pinpoint a single cause or factor, what parents can do at this stage is to help their children build tolerance. Guidelines by the National Institutes of Health encourage an early introduction of peanut-containing foods to children around the age of four to six months.

Live boa constrictor found in bin of Goodwill donations
(UPI) An employee sorting through donations at a Goodwill store in Texas made an unusual discovery: a live boa constrictor snake. Tassy Rodgers, who works in donation processing at Goodwill Industries in Fort Worth, said the albino snake was found in a bin of donations.
"I was tipping this machine, and when I brought the bin back the snake was hanging over the edge," Rodgers told KXAS-TV. "I was a little freaked out and thinking this cannot be fake; it's gotta be real."
Goodwill assistant manager James Murphy said it was unclear whether the snake was intentionally donated to the store.
"I don't know if someone may have [dropped it off] maliciously," Murphy said. "Maybe they wanted to get rid of it and weren't quite sure how, or maybe it just wanted to get warm. It was in a pile of clothing."
Murphy, an experienced snake owner, is taking care of the boa while officials try to track down its owner.

A new law that requires opioids to be prescribed electronically will bring consistency in the way prescriptions are filled and will also prevent the fraudulent use of prescription pads to
fuel the opioid crisis.
At one time, written prescriptions were the safest form of prescribing opioids, which state law required. Since that time and the rise of the opioid epidemic, providers’ prescription pads have been stolen, leading to fraudulent use and driving fake prescriptions for the addictive drug.
Act 96 of 2018 (formerly House Bill 353) will make it more difficult to have fake prescriptions filled, while also making it more convenient for patients who have a legitimate need for the medication. Currently, most all medications are prescribed electronically.
Another benefit of e-prescribing is that the tracking of the prescription can go directly to the state’s prescription drug monitoring database to help ensure only those who have a legitimate medical need for these prescriptions can access them.

Improving School Safety
The Bangor, Easton and Nazareth Area school districts have each received a $25,000 School Safety and Security Grant, which is part of the 2018-19 state budget.
The program, for which individual schools needed to apply, provides grants to school districts, intermediate units, area vocational-technical schools, charter schools and private residential rehabilitative institutions for a wide variety of projects to improve school safety. Grants for institutions other than public schools will be announced at later date.
Eligible uses for the grants include hiring school security officers, purchasing security-related technology, completing safety and security assessments, implementing violence prevention curricula, offering counseling services for students, and creating other programs to protect students.
Assistance for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Two new laws signed by the governor will assist grandparents raising their grandchildren and help them better access both private and public resources.
House Bill 2133, now Act 89 of 2018, will establish the Kinship Caregiver Navigator Program, an informational resource for these grandparents that will operate both as a website and a toll-free hotline. The website will offer information on support and services available, and a specially trained navigator through the hotline will be able to provide support and guidance to kinship caregivers, and serve as a mediator to establish relationships between kinship caregivers and relevant federal, state and local agency staff.
The cost to state taxpayers will be greatly reduced, as the Commonwealth just received $479,307 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families to develop the program.
Another measure to help grandchildren, House Bill 1539, now Act 88 of 2018, will allow grandparents to have temporary guardianship when the parents of the grandchildren are unable to care for them primarily due to substance abuse issues.
An estimated 82,000 grandparents are the sole caregivers for the nearly 89,000 grandchildren in Pennsylvania.

Magic Johnson announces he is HIV-positive 1991
On this day in 1991, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson stuns the world by announcing his sudden retirement from the Los Angeles Lakers, after testing positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. At the time, many Americans viewed AIDS as a gay white man’s disease. Johnson (1959- ), who is African American and heterosexual, was one of the first sports stars to go public about his HIV-positive status.
Revered as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Johnson spent his entire 13-season NBA career with the Lakers, helping them to win five championships in the 1980s. The 6’9″ point guard, a native of Lansing, Michigan, was famous for his extraordinary passing skills, contagious smile and love of the game. In 1981, he signed a 25-year deal with the Lakers for $25 million, one of the NBA’s first over-the-top contracts.
Johnson, a three-time NBA “Most Valuable Player” and 12-time All-Star team member, didn’t completely hang up his basketball shoes after announcing his retirement in 1991. He was voted most valuable player of the 1992 NBA All-Star Game and played on the Olympic “Dream Team” (alongside Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Patrick Ewing) that won gold for the U.S. in Barcelona that summer. He briefly returned to the Lakers for the 1993-94 season as head coach and made a short-lived comeback as a Lakers player in the 1995-96 season.

Trees in Fall for Scouts
Saturday, November 17 at 10:00-11:30 AM at Jacobsburg, join other scouts as we learn about the parts of trees and how they function. Trees in Fall for Scouts
Saturday, November 17 at 10:00-11:30 AM at Jacobsburg, join other scouts as we learn about the parts of trees and how they function. We'll learn some winter tree identification and how to measure trees using basic forestry tools. This program is best for ages 7 and up. Scouts must register individually or with their family. Troop registrations will not be accepted. Registration is required.
Hiking Preparedness for Scouts
On Saturday, November 17 at 12:30-3:00 PM scouts will learn how to prepare for a hiking trip at Jacobsburg. We’ll go for a 3 mile hike, stopping along the way to talk about outdoor scenarios and how to prepare for them. Bring water and a snack. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather.
