Victims Bill of Rights Question on Ballot
![]() Pennsylvanians will have the opportunity to vote on a proposed amendment to the state Constitution when they head to the polls on Nov. 5.
The question reads as follows: “Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to grant certain rights to crime victims, including to be treated with fairness, respect and dignity; considering their safety in bail proceedings; timely notice and opportunity to take part in public proceedings; reasonable protection from the accused; right to refuse discovery requests made by the accused; restitution and return of property; proceedings free from delay; and to be informed of these rights, so they can enforce them?” The question is being placed on the ballot after lawmakers approved legislation known as “Marsy’s Law” in two consecutive legislative sessions. Marsy’s Law is named after Marsalee “Marsy” Nicholas of California. She was stalked and killed by her ex-boyfriend in 1983. Just days later, her mother and brother were confronted by the accused murderer in a grocery store. They were unaware the defendant had been released on bail Valley NPR Raises $100K for Meals![]() (Lehigh Valley, PA) – For the second year in a row, Lehigh Valley NPR station and public radio station WDIY 88.1 FM has surpassed $100,000 raised from listener contributions in a single membership campaign. Donations from WDIY members during the campaign will also result in 11,951 meals being provided to those in need through Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley & Northeast Pennsylvania. This is thanks to a partnership between WDIY and Valley National Financial Advisors, wherein Valley National Financial Advisors agreed to match a portion of each listener donation with meals purchased for Second Harvest Food Bank to deliver. WDIY, whose broadcast studios are located in South Bethlehem, is celebrating its 25th anniversary of broadcasting as the Lehigh Valley’s locally-based station carrying NPR programming. In addition to award-winning NPR news programs such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered, the station features local programming hosted by over 90 volunteers from the community. This includes public affairs programming as well as a wide range of music programming covering genres ranging from classical, jazz and blues to folk, indie rock and world music. WDIY broadcasts at 88.1 FM, its main signal, whose broadcast radius stretches from areas immediately outside of Reading to the west; Jim Thorpe to the north; Quakertown to the south; and Clinton, New Jersey to the east. WDIY also has transmitters serving Easton-Phillipsburg at 93.9 and Fogelsville-Trexlertown at 93.7. In addition, WDIY streams on the web at wdiy.org. Art Workshop for Teens

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

New Main Street Market
Like a Breath of Fresh Air
........Plans Include Delivery Service.......

by Larry Cory
The re-opening of Main Street Market in Bangor is refreshing news since people, unfortunately, have become accustomed to seeing “going out of business” signs in many communities, including downtown Bangor.
When the Bank of America closed in Bangor two years ago, that was a shocker. What began as the First National Bank many years ago was now gone, making one wonder who’s next.
When news of the Main Street Market closing hit social media and elsewhere, it was as though Bangor had been dealt, not just another shocking setback, but one that hits where it really hurts.
Unless you have been squirreled away in a quarry hole for the past few years, you know that Main Street Market is not just another grocery store, it is THE grocery store for many residents in the Bangor area. Thus, local officials worked quickly with Lanta Bus to transport area residents to nearby stores. After all, food is a commodity that one needs everyday.
But just as quickly as Lanta came to the rescue, Nicole and Duane Smith, former managers of the Portland Market, stepped up to reopen the Market in Bangor.
“It was really by chance,” Nicole said. “We wanted to go back in business years ago, so I said to my husband, it might be a long-shot so why don’t we try to get in there.”
The Smiths ran the Portland Market in the early 2000s, but were forced to close after three floods made it impossible to continue. Currently, they are working toward reopening the Main Street store with a refurbished parking lot that has been milled and paved and a roof that has also been repaired.
Once open, they’re planning a delivery service which is a huge plus for their neighbors in the area.
Inside, “they’re going to see a nice, clean store,” Duane said. They also hope to continue to sell meat from local farms and they plan to have a butcher on hand “seven days a week.” Their tentative hours are 8-9 weekdays, 8-8 Saturdays and 8-6 on Sundays.
“The only day we will probably close is Christmas Day,” Duane said. They are also planning a soft opening for November 1 “if everything goes well.”
After meeting with the Smiths, it’s obvious that they are committed to providing quality and friendly service to the area. It will be like a breath of fresh air when shoppers open their doors for the first time and are greeted by the friendly faces of long-time store employees.
What Happens If My Neighbor's Tree
Falls on My House
Pen Argyl, PA October 30, 2019 – “Trees can be tricky, but for the most part homeowners are responsible for what falls into their own yard,” says Robin Tinsley, Sabatino Insurance Agency Inc. “If a storm causes your neighbor’s tree to fall in your yard, some homeowners’ insurance policies would help cover the cost of removing the tree.”
“The same is true in reverse: If a tree on your property falls in your neighbor’s yard, your neighbor should handle clean up and check with his or her insurance company to determine what type of coverage is available,” says Tinsley.
In most cases, neighbors are able to work things out without too much trouble, but depending on the extent of the damage you may need to file a claim.
The situation is different if the tree falls on your house. “The first thing to do, if it’s safe, is try to prevent further damage,” says Tinsley. “Then I tell people they should take some photos and call their insurance agent. An agent can explain your options and help you understand if coverage is available for damage and expenses for removing the tree.
“Policies differ,” says Tinsley. “It’s important to understand what is and isn’t covered with your insurance. Some homeowner policies will help cover the cost of removing the tree and remedying the damage it caused on your property, after your deductible.” Once you contact your insurance company a claims adjuster may need to come by to evaluate the damage and explain how your insurance coverage comes into play. It’s recommended that you call your claims adjuster before you contract to have the tree removed. Sometimes trees fall on cars. If it’s not safe or possible to remove the tree from the car yourself, you should call a professional to remove it. Depending on the damage and terms of your insurance coverage, your homeowners policy or the optional comprehensive coverage you may have under your auto policy could provide coverage for the loss.
Preventive measures matter when it comes to trees. Start by looking for signs of distress such as dead limbs, cracks in the trunk or major limbs, leaning to one side and branches that are close to a house or power line. Mushroom growth on the roots or bark can also signal trouble.
