 Effects of Drinking Soda

Picture
An ice-cold cola sure hits the spot sometimes, but that blast of sugar does a number on your body. Downing a can of soda sends your body into a frenzy—here’s why you might want to stick with water or seltzer next time you need to rehydrate.
Crack, fizz, gulp: Within the first 10 to 15 minutes of chugging that cola, your intestines mainline that sugar to your blood, spiking levels of glucose—blood sugar. That’s a ton of quick, fizzy energy, and to manage the onslaught, multiple organs in your body kick into overdrive so you can process that sugar.
Your pancreas chugs out insulin to help transport the sugar (which is a carbohydrate) to your muscles for energy. But that soda contains way more sugar than your muscles need. “When an individual drinks a 20-ounce soda, they are getting an entire meal’s carbohydrate load through liquid,” explains Meltem Zeytinoglu, MD, MBA, an endocrinologist and assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago Medicine. “In most cases, this soda is consumed in addition to a meal, so the additional carbohydrates will need to be processed. This extra sugar, instead of being stored in muscle tissue, gets converted to fat in the liver.”
Your kidney also comes into play by helping dump excess sugar through your urine. That means your body loses water, which, along with the diuretic effect of the caffeine in the soda, increases your risk of dehydration. The sugar and caffeine in soda are “quite the unhealthy combination,” says Dr. Zeytinoglu.
Then there’s the issue of one soda never really being enough: According to a Princeton study, when researchers fed hungry rats a sugary solution, their brains released dopamine, a chemical that triggers motivation and reward. It’s a response similar to what happens when a rat is given cocaine or heroin. And according to a National Institutes of Health study, sugar can be even more addictive than cocaine; the theory is that we’ve evolved as a species to instinctively value quick, high-carb, high-calorie foods, say the researchers.
The good news is you don’t have to banish sodas completely. “The most important thing to remember is that portion control matters,” says Cordialis Msora-Kasago, MA, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Los Angeles and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “An occasional soda is not going to have a significant impact on your health. It’s when it becomes a regular habit that [it’s] a problem. Look for other non-caloric beverages you enjoy, like iced tea, water, and infused waters.” Next, read about some more reasons to cut back on all soda (including diet).

Man uses teeth to pull 677-ton cargo ship

Picture
(UPI)  A Ukrainian strongman nicknamed "Tug-Tooth" set a national record, and possibly a world record, by pulling a 677-ton cargo ship with his teeth.   Lviv native Oleg "Tug-Tooth" Skavych pulled the cargo ship Vereshchagino a distance of more than 52 feet to set what officials declared was a national record.
The feat also surpasses the current Guinness World Record, set by Russian Omar Hanapiev, who used his teeth to pull a 635-ton cargo ship a distance of just under 50 feet in 2001.
Officials said Skavych's attempt has been submitted to Guinness.
Skavych previously set a Guinness World Record when he used his teeth to pull a 21.5-ton tram a distance of 22.3 feet.

Fighting Opioid Abuse
A new law that requires opioids to be prescribed electronically will bring consistency in the way prescriptions are filled and will also prevent the fraudulent use of prescription pads to
fuel the opioid crisis.
At one time, written prescriptions were the safest form of prescribing opioids, which state law required. Since that time and the rise of the opioid epidemic, providers’ prescription pads have been stolen, leading to fraudulent use and driving fake prescriptions for the addictive drug.
Act 96 of 2018 (formerly House Bill 353) will make it more difficult to have fake prescriptions filled, while also making it more convenient for patients who have a legitimate need for the medication. Currently, most all medications are prescribed electronically.
Another benefit of e-prescribing is that the tracking of the prescription can go directly to the state’s prescription drug monitoring database to help ensure only those who have a legitimate medical need for these prescriptions can access them.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - November 5

George Foreman becomes oldest heavyweight champ  1994

On this day in 1994, George Foreman, age 45, becomes boxing’s oldest heavyweight champion when he defeats 26-year-old Michael Moorer in the 10th round of their WBA fight in Las Vegas. More than 12,000 spectators at the MGM Grand Hotel watched Foreman dethrone Moorer, who went into the fight with a 35-0 record. Foreman dedicated his upset win to “all my buddies in the nursing home and all the guys in jail.”
Born in 1949 in Marshal, Texas, Foreman had a troubled childhood and dropped out of high school. Eventually, he joined President Lyndon Johnson’s Jobs Corps work program and discovered a talent for boxing. “Big George,” as he was nicknamed, took home a gold medal for the U.S. at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. In 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica, after winning his first 37 professional matches, 34 by knockout, Foreman KO’d “Smokin'” Joe Frazier after two rounds and was crowned heavyweight champ. At 1974’s “Rumble in the Jungle” in Kinshasha, Zaire, the younger, stronger Foreman suffered a surprising loss to underdog Muhammad Ali and was forced to relinquish his championship title. Three years later, Big George morphed from pugilist into preacher, when he had a religious experience in his dressing room after losing a fight. He retired from boxing, became an ordained minister in Houston and founded a youth center.
A decade later, the millions he’d made as a boxer gone, Foreman returned to the ring at age 38 and staged a successful comeback. When he won his second heavyweight title in his 1994 fight against Moorer, becoming the WBA and IBF champ, Foreman was wearing the same red trunks he’d had on the night he lost to Ali.
