“Giving It Up” Bonfire
“Giving It Up” Bonfire will be held Saturday, November 30, from 7-9pm at Kainoa’s Ohana, 11390 N Delaware Drive Bangor.
No matter how much we may want things to stay the same or return to the way they were, life is all about change. But no matter why things are changing, we need to be able to let go and move forward. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a traumatic childhood, a strained relationship, a professional failure, or a personal betrayal, holding onto that pain, anger, and/or resentment only holds us back, stuck in a rut.
Come Kainoa's Ohana in Lower Mount Bethel Township for a bonfire... a “giving it up” bonfire. Here’s an opportunity to join hands with others and move forward in an environment of safety and support. If desired, write down your pain, your hurt, your anger, your resentment and throw it into the fire to let go and “give it up.”
You may also bring marshmallows to toast (and graham crackers and chocolate to make s'mores) or simply enjoy the warmth of the bonfire and camaraderie of friends. There’s a pavilion where hot cider will be served, but this is an outdoors event so don’t forget to dress (hat, gloves, scarf, coat) for the weather!
Pre-registration required. Send email to info@oasisbethlehem.org For more information about Kainoa’s Ohana, visit the website at: www.KainoasOhana.com

Best Flu Hacks Every Traveler Should Know

Picture

While everyone wants to make the most of their vacation, travel can do a number on one’s health, and during flu season, the risk of feeling unwell is even higher. Feel your best with these tips:
• Flu levels increase during winter because people spend more time in enclosed spaces together touching surfaces and breathing “shared” air. Traveling only amplifies this. Reduce your chances of swapping germs by avoiding contact with shared items.
• Ironically, just when handwashing is most vital -- while traveling -- it becomes less convenient. Carry handwipes and sanitizers and use them when you can’t wash your hands. More importantly, avoid rubbing your eyes or nose.
• An airplane cabin’s dry air accommodates the growth of viruses that thrive on low humidity. Additionally, travelers often refrain from hydrating to avoid frequent bathroom trips. Yet, when mucous membranes are dry, they can’t keep germs at bay. A general rule is to drink at least 8 ounces of water for every hour in the air.
• Getting medical attention away from home is tough. Travel smart with over-the-counter products that are homeopathic and easy to use. Some, like Oscillococcinum, are good to pack in your carry-on so you can take at the first sign of symptoms.  Widely available in supermarkets and drugstores, this flu medicine is taken without water, making it an ideal travel remedy.
  To learn more, visit Oscillo.com.
• There’s no doubt that travel can cause stress, which research has shown can increase susceptibility to flu and even increase the severity of symptoms. Being flexible, prepared and building extra time into your schedule can make for stress-free travel.
• Exercise boosts energy and immunity, so don’t take a vacation from workouts while traveling.
•  Get plenty of rest before your trip to keep your body’s natural defenses at optimum levels.

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

Picture
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

Recovery Revolution Launches New Video

Picture

                                                     “With Recovery…there is Hope
                                        “With Revolution…there is Transformation”

By Jacqui Hower
Recovery Revolution, recently launched a dynamic new video that highlights the history, vision, and mission of the charitable, non-profit organization, which is fully licensed to provide an array of addiction outpatient services. Jana Morris, executive director and founder, along with her team of licensed/certified clinicians promote healthy, responsible, and individualized treatment for addiction through programs responsive to family and community needs.
For years, the Slate Belt Region lacked affordable addiction treatment programs. Ms. Morris, along with another clinician, saw this need as an opportunity to establish and provide a local, independent facility that is not only affordable and accessible, but more importantly, one that is client driven and effective to Slate Belt communities. In 2005, the Pennsylvania Department of Health licensed Recovery Revolution and a life-long dream came to fruition. Four years later, the facility was able to purchase and fully renovate a three story building in the heart of downtown Bangor, which enabled the expansion of services offered, as well as deepening their dedicated commitment to the Slate Belt and surrounding communities.
Recovery Revolution, located at 109 Broadway in Bangor, is staffed with an exceptionally experienced, compassionate, and highly educated team of clinicians who specialize in the addiction field. Treatment is based on the 12-Step Philosophy customized to meet the specific needs of each individual client. Clients enjoy feeling safe and respected in the home-like outpatient environment, while being provided with treatment that addresses the disease of addiction and its impact on the body, mind, spirit, and social aspects of a person’s life and tools they need to live a healthier, meaningful, and productive life.
Services offered to the community include but are not limited to, an Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program; Parents, Partners, and Loved Ones Program; State of the Art, 12 hour DUI Program; Addiction Intervention Services; School-Based Outpatient and School-Based Prevention/Education Program. A more comprehensive list of programs that can be accessed at the facility is available on their website.
Additionally, in 2014, Recovery Revolution opened ‘A Clean Slate’ Recovery Center located at 100 South First Street in Bangor, which provides a vast array of assistance to Slate Belt citizens by providing a safe space, assistance in referrals, a 12-step meeting space, and community education, access to internet and computers, and sober activities.
With the support of the community they are dedicated to serving, Recovery Revolution and A Clean Slate can continue with their mission to prevent, educate, and treat addiction in the Slate Belt Area. If you’re interested in volunteering, wish to give financial support, you or a loved one is in need of a service offered by either organization, or just want to find out more information visit the links listed below:

Citizens Shape Our State Parks

Picture

From one state park in 1893, to 121 state parks in 2015, DCNR’s Bureau of State Parks has blossomed into one of the largest state park systems in the eastern United States -- comprising nearly 300,000 acres statewide.
Thanks to the work of inspired leaders and concerned citizens, these public natural places have turned the once “Pennsylvania Desert” -- from the boom of coal and lumber industries after the Civil War -- into a forest wonderland.
From the 1950s through the 1970s, the number of state parks grew from 50 to 111 as part of a goal of locating a state park within 25 miles of every citizen in Pennsylvania.
In the 1980s, an ongoing effort was started to improve park facilities and to support environmental education and interpretation.
In the early 1990s, State Parks 2000 was the initiative that helped guide the modernization of state parks. This strategic planning effort called for:
  • The modernization of facilities
  • Expanding environmental education program offerings
  • Designating natural areas in parks to better protect sensitive or special natural resources
Now, 25 years later, DCNR is undergoing another planning process to guide the agency in caring for state parks for the next 25 years. Read more...

Our studio is a supportive workplace for women leaving lives of violence and addiction. The women receive 2 years of rent-free housing while they heal from the trauma that life on the streets brings. When a woman enters our program she begins a 90-day intensive outpatient recovery program and then continues to build a life free from addiction and violence, with trauma informed and art therapy, life coaching and vocational training. Bloom Bangor graduates go on to live successful, self-sufficient and fulfilling lives, creating a new future for themselves, their families, our community and our economy.
