Citizens Shape Our State Parks

From one state park in 1893, to 121 state parks in 2015, DCNR’s Bureau of State Parks has blossomed into one of the largest state park systems in the eastern United States -- comprising nearly 300,000 acres statewide.
Thanks to the work of inspired leaders and concerned citizens, these public natural places have turned the once “Pennsylvania Desert” -- from the boom of coal and lumber industries after the Civil War -- into a forest wonderland.
From the 1950s through the 1970s, the number of state parks grew from 50 to 111 as part of a goal of locating a state park within 25 miles of every citizen in Pennsylvania.
In the 1980s, an ongoing effort was started to improve park facilities and to support environmental education and interpretation.
In the early 1990s, State Parks 2000 was the initiative that helped guide the modernization of state parks. This strategic planning effort called for:
- The modernization of facilities
- Expanding environmental education program offerings
- Designating natural areas in parks to better protect sensitive or special natural resources

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.
To review bald eagle nest guidelines, or to report your nest sighting to the game commission, click here.

Genetic Testing Scam Alert

The Department of Aging is warning Pennsylvania seniors, their families and caregivers about a new scam targeting older adults.
Scammers are offering “free” genetic testing, claiming it is covered through Medicare, as a means for the senior to avoid disease or to find the right medications. This is simply an effort to gain access to a senior’s personal Medicare information, which can lead to access to financial information and more.
The Administration for Community Living suggests the following tips to avoid being scammed: Do not accept genetic testing services, including a cheek swab, from someone at a community event; always be cautious about giving out your personal information, including your Medicare number; don’t accept a genetic testing kit through the mail unless it was ordered by your physician; and always review your Medicare Summary Notice or Explanation of Benefits, watching for words such as “gene analysis” or “molecular pathology.”
If you or a loved one have already received a genetic testing cheek swab or screening that was not ordered by a trusted provider, or have any concerns about possible fraud, find and contact your local Senior Medicare Patrol here or call 1-877-808-2468.
Recovery Revolution Launches New Video

“With Recovery…there is Hope
“With Revolution…there is Transformation”
By Jacqui Hower
Recovery Revolution, recently launched a dynamic new video that highlights the history, vision, and mission of the charitable, non-profit organization, which is fully licensed to provide an array of addiction outpatient services. Jana Morris, executive director and founder, along with her team of licensed/certified clinicians promote healthy, responsible, and individualized treatment for addiction through programs responsive to family and community needs.
For years, the Slate Belt Region lacked affordable addiction treatment programs. Ms. Morris, along with another clinician, saw this need as an opportunity to establish and provide a local, independent facility that is not only affordable and accessible, but more importantly, one that is client driven and effective to Slate Belt communities. In 2005, the Pennsylvania Department of Health licensed Recovery Revolution and a life-long dream came to fruition. Four years later, the facility was able to purchase and fully renovate a three story building in the heart of downtown Bangor, which enabled the expansion of services offered, as well as deepening their dedicated commitment to the Slate Belt and surrounding communities.
Recovery Revolution, located at 109 Broadway in Bangor, is staffed with an exceptionally experienced, compassionate, and highly educated team of clinicians who specialize in the addiction field. Treatment is based on the 12-Step Philosophy customized to meet the specific needs of each individual client. Clients enjoy feeling safe and respected in the home-like outpatient environment, while being provided with treatment that addresses the disease of addiction and its impact on the body, mind, spirit, and social aspects of a person’s life and tools they need to live a healthier, meaningful, and productive life.
Services offered to the community include but are not limited to, an Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program; Parents, Partners, and Loved Ones Program; State of the Art, 12 hour DUI Program; Addiction Intervention Services; School-Based Outpatient and School-Based Prevention/Education Program. A more comprehensive list of programs that can be accessed at the facility is available on their website.
Additionally, in 2014, Recovery Revolution opened ‘A Clean Slate’ Recovery Center located at 100 South First Street in Bangor, which provides a vast array of assistance to Slate Belt citizens by providing a safe space, assistance in referrals, a 12-step meeting space, and community education, access to internet and computers, and sober activities.
With the support of the community they are dedicated to serving, Recovery Revolution and A Clean Slate can continue with their mission to prevent, educate, and treat addiction in the Slate Belt Area. If you’re interested in volunteering, wish to give financial support, you or a loved one is in need of a service offered by either organization, or just want to find out more information visit the links listed below:

A Little Math Never Hurt Anyone

In Matthew Derr’s “discovery classroom,” third graders watch tornadoes swirl around their classroom using augmented-reality technology. As they view their desks through the screen of a tablet, a powerful F-5 tornado sends cows and fences blowing through the air.
“We roll in a cart with cellphones that are virtual reality and augmented reality, and the classes are just super excited. They’re asking, ‘When are we doing this again?’ Because they want to see things, but they also want to learn more,” said Derr, who teaches at Whitfield Elementary School in the Wilson School District in Berks County.
Having access to cutting-edge technology gives kids a hands-on, interactive way to learn complex concepts that goes beyond showing a video on a projector, Derr said.
The technology in Derr’s class was made possible through PAsmart, a new state grant program designed to “invest in the commonwealth’s existing and future workforce.” Part of that mission is to promote better education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Last year, Gov. Tom Wolf awarded $20 million in PAsmart STEM grants to public schools across Pennsylvania to provide better STEM and computer science education.
The state estimates that most jobs created in the next decade will require workers to use computers, and many opportunities will be STEM-related.
Erin Allred, whose sons took discovery classes with Derr, said they have changed the way her children see the things around them.
“Legos and K’nex and things like that aren’t just toys anymore,” she said. “They’re tools to solve problems and build bridges.”
Bill Laubner Celebrates Centennial Year

Seventeen family friends and neighbors helped Bill celebrate his 100th birthday at Sal’s pizza in Wind Gap on Saturday, November 23, 2019. Bill was also presented with a Pennsylvania state Senate commendation for having reached his 100th birthday through Mario Scavello.
Bill Laubner was born in Ludwigshafen Germany November 23, 1919. He moved to Brooklyn when he was 3 years old with his parents and sister.
