Recovery Revolution Launches New Video

Picture

                                                     “With Recovery…there is Hope
                                        “With Revolution…there is Transformation”

By Jacqui Hower
Recovery Revolution, recently launched a dynamic new video that highlights the history, vision, and mission of the charitable, non-profit organization, which is fully licensed to provide an array of addiction outpatient services. Jana Morris, executive director and founder, along with her team of licensed/certified clinicians promote healthy, responsible, and individualized treatment for addiction through programs responsive to family and community needs.
For years, the Slate Belt Region lacked affordable addiction treatment programs. Ms. Morris, along with another clinician, saw this need as an opportunity to establish and provide a local, independent facility that is not only affordable and accessible, but more importantly, one that is client driven and effective to Slate Belt communities. In 2005, the Pennsylvania Department of Health licensed Recovery Revolution and a life-long dream came to fruition. Four years later, the facility was able to purchase and fully renovate a three story building in the heart of downtown Bangor, which enabled the expansion of services offered, as well as deepening their dedicated commitment to the Slate Belt and surrounding communities.
Recovery Revolution, located at 109 Broadway in Bangor, is staffed with an exceptionally experienced, compassionate, and highly educated team of clinicians who specialize in the addiction field. Treatment is based on the 12-Step Philosophy customized to meet the specific needs of each individual client. Clients enjoy feeling safe and respected in the home-like outpatient environment, while being provided with treatment that addresses the disease of addiction and its impact on the body, mind, spirit, and social aspects of a person’s life and tools they need to live a healthier, meaningful, and productive life.
Services offered to the community include but are not limited to, an Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program; Parents, Partners, and Loved Ones Program; State of the Art, 12 hour DUI Program; Addiction Intervention Services; School-Based Outpatient and School-Based Prevention/Education Program. A more comprehensive list of programs that can be accessed at the facility is available on their website.
Additionally, in 2014, Recovery Revolution opened ‘A Clean Slate’ Recovery Center located at 100 South First Street in Bangor, which provides a vast array of assistance to Slate Belt citizens by providing a safe space, assistance in referrals, a 12-step meeting space, and community education, access to internet and computers, and sober activities.
With the support of the community they are dedicated to serving, Recovery Revolution and A Clean Slate can continue with their mission to prevent, educate, and treat addiction in the Slate Belt Area. If you’re interested in volunteering, wish to give financial support, you or a loved one is in need of a service offered by either organization, or just want to find out more information visit the links listed below:

“Giving It Up” Bonfire

Picture
“Giving It Up” Bonfire will be held Saturday, November 30, from 7-9pm at Kainoa’s Ohana, 11390 N Delaware Drive Bangor.
No matter how much we may want things to stay the same or return to the way they were, life is all about change. But no matter why things are changing, we need to be able to let go and move forward. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a traumatic childhood, a strained relationship, a professional failure, or a personal betrayal, holding onto that pain, anger, and/or resentment only holds us back, stuck in a rut.
Come Kainoa's Ohana in Lower Mount Bethel Township for a bonfire... a “giving it up” bonfire. Here’s an opportunity to join hands with others and move forward in an environment of safety and support. If desired, write down your pain, your hurt, your anger, your resentment and throw it into the fire to let go and “give it up.”
You may also bring marshmallows to toast (and graham crackers and chocolate to make s'mores) or simply enjoy the warmth of the bonfire and camaraderie of friends. There’s a pavilion where hot cider will be served, but this is an outdoors event so don’t forget to dress (hat, gloves, scarf, coat) for the weather!
Pre-registration required. Send email to info@oasisbethlehem.org For more information about Kainoa’s Ohana, visit the website at: www.KainoasOhana.com

New Education Benefit for
PA National Guard Families

Picture
Members of the Pennsylvania National Guard are encouraged to take advantage of the new Military Family Education Program, or PA GI Bill, which is now open for enrollment.
Under Act 32 of 2019, Guard members who commit to an additional six years of service can receive five years of higher education benefits for their spouses and children. The program will provide 10 semesters of tuition-free education for family member(s).
The benefit must be used at a Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency-approved educational institution, and at the tuition rate set by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
Previously, Guard members only were eligible for the Education Assistance Program with their initial service obligation of six years that provides a non-transferable educational benefit. The expansion of this program to spouses and children will help more military families succeed.
Interested Guard members can apply through their unit to the PA National Guard Education Office. Tuition benefits will begin for the 2020-21 academic year.
More information about the program is available here.

Help Track Bald Eagle Population

Picture
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking for the public’s help to track the state’s growing bald eagle population. After reaching a low of just three nesting bald eagle pairs in the Commonwealth in the early 1980s, officials now estimate there are more than 300 nesting pairs here.
While bald eagles are no longer listed as a threatened species in Pennsylvania, they are still protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits taking of the birds, nests or eggs. If you spot a bald eagle nest, please use proper etiquette to avoid disturbing the birds.

Picture
Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will present its 29th annual Old Time Christmas event on December 7, 8 and December 14, 15 with candlelit tours leaving every 15 minutes beginning at 3:00 p.m., with the last group going out at 7:00 p.m.
Gather around a bonfire while you wait for your visit to the 1800s to begin. Guides in period clothing will lead guests on their journey into the past beginning with this year’s Victorian skit. Glimpse an 1890s Christmas as the family reminiscences and makes new makes holiday memories. Before you leave take a peek at their Christmas Putz, a homemade nativity and village scene that was a custom the Moravians began and was soon enthusiastically adopted by the Pennsylvania Germans.
Afterwards it’s on to the living Nativity located in the barnyard which includes the Quiet Valley farm animals and offers a look at the foundation of this special celebration including a soloist and scripture readings. Then off to a simple log cabin where visitors experience the rustic Christmas of the early 1800s. At the one room schoolhouse it is a jolly time as the school marm leads both the musicians and guests in singing their favorite seasonal carols. There is plenty of nervous excitement in the cellar kitchen as folks await a visit from the Belschnikel, a traditional Pennsylvania German character who made his rounds during the Christmas season. He is the one who really knows if you were naughty or nice.
The final stop is in the Engel Education Building for complimentary refreshments which adds a final festive touch to the visit. As you leave be sure to stop in the Holiday Gift Shop which is stocked with heritage crafts handmade by Quiet Valley artisans. It is the place to find unique gifts at reasonable prices.

Scavello Bill Raising Age for Tobacco
Purchase from 18 to 21 Set for Enactment

Picture
Harrisburg -- Legislation sponsored by Senator Mario Scavello (R-40) that would increase the legal age for purchasing tobacco products from age 18 to 21 received final Senate approval today and is set to be signed into law.
Senate Bill 473 would make it a summary offense for anyone under 21 to purchase any tobacco product, including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, cigars and pipe tobacco.  If it becomes law, Pennsylvania will join 21 states that have a tobacco and e-cigarette sales age of 21.
In Pennsylvania, cigarette smoking causes 22,000 deaths each year. Annual health care costs of $6.38 billion are directly caused by smoking, along with another $5.73 billion in lost productivity, Scavello said.
“As the availability and appeal of e-cigarettes has increased in particular, the rates of high-school age children vaping has increased 40 percent in just one year. Twenty-four percent of Pennsylvania high school teens use e-cigarettes, driving up overall youth smoking rates to over 32 percent,” Scavello said. “It’s clear that we have to act.”
Nearly 90 percent of smokers try their first cigarette before age 18, Scavello noted. An increasing number of teens under 18 get tobacco products from their 18-year-old high school peers – who can legally purchase tobacco products. Increasing the minimum legal sales age to 21 would reduce underage access to tobacco through these legal-age peers.
Recent studies have found that “Tobacco-21” laws have been successful in reducing the amount of people aged 18-20 who smoke and could save more than 223,000 lives from deaths related to smoking.  More than two-thirds of Pennsylvanians surveyed favor raising the legal age for tobacco sales to 21.
“This change will save lives and reduce health care costs,” Scavello said. “I speak as the son of a life-long smoker who lost his father to lung cancer, so this legislation hits particularly close to home.”

“Giving It Up” Bonfire
