Hunters Can Share their Harvests
To help families, individuals and seniors who are in need, the Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) program has encouraged hunters from across the Commonwealth to share their deer harvest and provide thousands of pounds of venison.
The program partners with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Department of Agriculture and many other sportsmen and charitable organizations. Since 1991, HSH has distributed more than 1.2 million pounds of donated venison.
Hunters can donate all or part of a harvested deer by taking it to a participating processor, which will then distribute the ground venison to food banks and pantries.
In an average hunting season, the HSH program’s goal is to channel about 100,000 pounds of processed venison through the state’s 20 regional food banks, which then redistribute to more than 5,000 local provider charities such as food pantries, missions, homeless shelters and churches, as well as individual families.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - November 21
Millions tune in to find out who shot J.R. 1980
On this day in 1980, 350 million people around the world tune in to television’s popular primetime drama “Dallas” to find out who shot J.R. Ewing, the character fans loved to hate. J.R. had been shot on the season-ending episode the previous March 21, which now stands as one of television’s most famous cliffhangers. The plot twist inspired widespread media coverage and left America wondering “Who shot J.R.?” for the next eight months. The November 21 episode solved the mystery, identifying Kristin Shepard, J.R.’s wife’s sister and his former mistress, as the culprit.
The CBS television network debuted the first five-episode pilot season of “Dallas” in 1978; it went on to run for another 12 full-length seasons. The first show of its kind, “Dallas” was dubbed a “primetime soap opera” for its serial plots and dramatic tales of moral excess. The show revolved around the relations of two Texas oil families: the wealthy, successful Ewing family and the perpetually down-on-their-luck Barnes family. The families’ patriarchs, Jock Ewing and Digger Barnes, were former partners locked in a years-long feud over oil fields Barnes claimed had been stolen by Ewing. Ewing’s youngest son Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and Barnes’ daughter Pam (Victoria Principal) had married, linking the battling clans even more closely. The character of J.R. Ewing, Bobby’s oldest brother and a greedy, conniving, womanizing scoundrel, was played by Larry Hagman.
As J.R. had many enemies, audiences were hard-pressed to guess who was responsible for his attempted murder. That summer, the question “Who Shot J.R.?” entered the national lexicon, becoming a popular t-shirt slogan, and heightening anticipation of the soap’s third season, which was to air in the fall. After a much-talked-about contract dispute with Hagman was finally settled, the season was delayed because of a Screen Actors Guild strike, much to the dismay of “Dallas” fans. When it finally aired, the episode revealing J.R.’s shooter became one of television’s most watched shows, with an audience of 83 million people in the U.S. alone—a full 76 percent of all U.S. televisions on that night were tuned in—and helped put “Dallas” into greater worldwide circulation. It also popularized the use of the cliffhanger by television writers.

Breakfast with Santa
Hosted by First United Methodist Church Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 9 AM – 11 AM, 55 North 3rd Street, Bangor. You're invited to bring your children to their second annual Breakfast with Santa at the church. You'll enjoy a delicious, hot, all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet with Santa. Everyone will have an opportunity to have their picture taken with Santa!
Seating is limited so make your reservations now. Last year we were at maximum capacity and couldn't admit any more. Children under 12 are free, all others are $5.
No refunds will be issued for cancellations made within 2 weeks of the event or for no-shows as your reservations are for your seats and means that someone else was unable to attend.
Winter Wildlife Watch
On Saturday, December 8 at 10:00 AM-3:00 PM, spend some of your Saturday watching wildlife at Jacobsburg! Our educators will have activities available at the visitor center including a morning bird walk, bird feeder making, indoor wildlife viewing area, and an afternoon hike to find traces of animals along the trails. Hot chocolate will be available all day long. Join us for one of the organized adventures, choose your own, or enjoy the activities at the visitor center.
Elks National Hoop Shoot
Bangor Lodge #1106 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is pleased to announce the
Elks National Hoop Shoot to be held beginning at 12:00 PM noon on Saturday December 8, 2018 at the
Washington Elementary School, 381 Washington Blvd, Bangor, PA. This Free Throw Contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 through 13 and is free to all contestants. Registration will be open beginning at 11:30 AM on December 8, 2018 at the school gymnasium.
Beginning at the local level, winning contestants will advance through District, State, Regional, and National competitions. The Elks helps sponsor contestants and their families at every level of competition. One boy and one girl from each division will win a national title at the National Finals and have their names inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Two National Champions will receive the Getty Powell Award for most baskets made during the National Finals.
The Elks National Hoop Shoot Program, sponsored by the Elks National Foundation, provides a character-building, competitive experience for all contestants. Contestants learn about the importance of respect and good sportsmanship. The Bangor Lodge is a proud sponsor of this annual local event.
