PHOTO GALLERY Sbtt Photo Emily Dario SEE VIDEO BELOW Law Reform Will Help Students![]() Following through on their commitment to improve career and technical education (CTE) through the #GoodJobs4PA legislative package, a new state law will make the most significant reforms to our CTE laws in more than three decades.
Act 76 of 2019, which was signed into law last week, will help ensure our students are better prepared for success in the workforce while at the same time attracting employers and economic development to the Commonwealth. To ensure students are well informed about their choices, the law expands an online database of articulation agreements so students know what courses may transfer between higher education institutions and requires schools to give equal opportunity to both college and career presenters at career fairs. The measure also requires the Pennsylvania Workforce Development Board, with assistance from the Department of Education, to conduct a survey to determine the number and types of workforce development programs offered at secondary and postsecondary institutions. To support CTE programs financially, Act 76 sets into law guidelines for CTE equipment grants and establishes the Schools-to-Work Program within the Department of Labor and Industry to provide grants to pre-apprenticeship programs for the purpose of establishing or enhancing workforce development partnerships between schools, employers, organizations or associations to create employment and training pathways. What Is a Long-Term Care Rider ? A long-term care (LTC) rider is an optional add-on to a qualifying life insurance policy that provides financial support if you need hands-on daily care from a nurse or a health aide for long periods of time. This care can be received at your home or in health care facility. The benefits are triggered when a licensed health professional¹ certifies that you are unable to complete at least two daily living activities independently, such as bathing, dressing, eating, using the bathroom or moving in or out of a bed.² The coverage for an LTC rider is provided through an acceleration of death benefits on a life insurance policy. That means the payments that you receive to cover long-term medical expenses are subtracted from the amount that will be paid to beneficiaries through the life insurance policy after your death.³ For many, an LTC rider is a more appealing option than a stand-alone LTC policy, which may be expensive, offer no cash value and could require more extensive underwriting. WHAT ERIE FAMILY LIFE OFFERS With a Long-Term Care (LTC) Accelerated Death Benefit Rider from Erie Family Life Insurance Company,⁴ you’ll have the flexibility to use your money for what you need. Getting Ready for Winter![]() Winter weather arrived in some parts of the Commonwealth earlier this week, reminding us of the importance of preparing for colder weather and winter travel.
Preparation is one key to successfully navigating winter roads. Prior to the winter driving season, you should have a mechanic check the brakes, battery, hoses and belts. Also, be sure to check your fluid levels, make sure your wipers don’t streak, ensure your heater and defroster are working properly, check to make sure all your lights are working, and ensure your tires are properly inflated and have sufficient tread depth. Pack an emergency travel kit as well. Click here for more information. When it’s cold outside, try to stay indoors as much as possible. If you must go outside, cover yours ears, head, mouth and face; dress in layers; don’t ignore your body shivering; and check on infants and senior citizens to ensure they are warm enough. Click here for more information. Finally, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) reminds residents to write down, print or save toll-free outage hotlines for your electric utility and/or your natural gas utility, which are listed on your monthly bills and posted on the PUC website. The PUC also encourages you to call your utility company if an outage occurs and not to assume someone else has already done so. Click here for more information.

No matter how much we may want things to stay the same or return to the way they were, life is all about change. But no matter why things are changing, we need to be able to let go and move forward. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a traumatic childhood, a strained relationship, a professional failure, or a personal betrayal, holding onto that pain, anger, and/or resentment only holds us back, stuck in a rut. If desired, write down your pain, your hurt, your anger, your resentment and throw it into the fire to let go and “give it up.” You may also bring marshmallows to toast (and graham crackers and chocolate to make s'mores) or simply enjoy the warmth of the bonfire and camaraderie of friends. There’s a pavilion where hot cider will be served, but this is an outdoors event so don’t forget to dress (hat, gloves, scarf, coat) for the weather! Pre-registration required.
