Last year I wrote this article just after labor day after my uncle
(a front line Korean War Vet) encouraged me to write this article.

The Day Is Done - Taps

Memorial Day is a day set aside for honoring and remembering the selflessness of those who gave of themselves, and with some, even their lives for our freedom.
There are several different accounts of how “Taps” came to be, but the information below appears to be the most accepted among historians.
Taps is part of that appreciation (full military honors) afforded to those that have paid the ultimate price for us.
This unassuming song, simple in form,  very profound, and emotionally moving, with only 24 notes has become the centerpiece of final respect for a veteran.
Taps was originally titled, “The day is done”  and was sounded at the end of each day signifying lights out with 3 drum Taps following.  This tradition started  prior to the civil war.
Captain John Francis Tidball,  lost a corporal from his Battery A, 2nd U.S. artillery unit during the civil war in July of 1862.  Tidball was denied his request to fire three shots over the soldiers' grave due to military reasons, so instead for full military honors he had “Taps” sounded.  Thus, quickly began the tradition and considered the appropriate way to show full military honors and eventually commissioned to be sounded at the end of a funeral before folding the flag, for an American veteran of the armed forces.
Today, at one of five local Slate Belt cemetery's  you'll hear  Amazing grace or How Great Thought Art or Just a Closer Walk With Thee, a pause, then Taps being sounded.  This is a tradition which began several years ago for me.  My uncle, Joe Niceforo, a front line marine veteran of the Korean war, prompted me to write this article after going with me the last several years.
The military wasn't a path taken in my life.  However, the more I study history, the founding documents, founding fathers, President Lincoln, etc. a thankful appreciation for our veterans had started to grow within me. What could I give back?  All I had was a trumpet and could play Taps.  This year I sounded Taps for the first time at My father's grave site.
Amazing grace then Taps was heard echoing throughout the Fairview Cemetery, and memories of my dad flashed in my mind. We ( my mom and sisters) miss him dearly but are thankful each day for the legacy he left.  By the time I arrived at St. John's Cemetery an evening fog was starting to settle...a solemn and peaceful atmosphere had encamped around the whole cemetery.  Starting at the mausoleum, then in the center of the cemetery then at the highest point.  From the sound of the trumpet, Amazing Grace and Taps was heard  across the cemetery the woods and reaching deep into the valley of Bangor.
These days, I find myself looking for veterans, reaching out and shaking their hands expressing a hardy “thank  you for your service”.  Often, a smile will follow with, “you're welcome” and suddenly they seem a little taller.
Find a vet and let them know how much you appreciate the freedoms afforded you, thank God for that vet and then to show your appreciation.....make the most of everyday.

Taps Lyrics written by Horace Lorenzo...

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.

Thanks and praise, for our days,
 'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, neath the sky;
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.

Sun has set, shadows come,
Time has fled, Scouts must go to their beds
Always true to the promise that they made.

While the light fades from sight,
And the stars gleaming rays softly send,
To thy hands we our souls, Lord, commend.

Seattle Mussels Test Positive for Opioids

Picture

Mussels off the coast of Seattle have tested positive for opioids.
These mussels, however, were never intended to end up on the dinner table. Instead, they were used specifically to measure levels of pollution in the waters of Puget Sound, according to a May 9 statement from the Puget Sound Institute (PSI) at the University of Washington, Tacoma.
Mussels are filter feeders; to eat, the shellfish constantly sift the water around them in their hunt for bacteria or microscopic algae. But as they filter food from the water, mussels may also absorb any chemicals and pollutants floating around them, Live Science reported in 2014.  Because of this, mussels make good barometers for pollution levels.
So, every two years, scientists at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) transplant uncontaminated mussels, raised in pristine waters, to various locations in Puget Sound, according to the statement. Then, two to three months later, the scientists analyze the mussel tissues for pollutants.
This time around, the researchers detected traces of the opioid oxycodone in mussels from three of the 18 locations tested, according to CBS News. This is the first time that opioids have been detected in Puget Sound mussels, the PSI statement said.

Wild monkey makes regular visits to public pool

Picture

(UPI)   A visitor to a public pool in India captured video of an unusual fellow regular -- a wild monkey that frequently shows up for a swim.A guest at the Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj swimming pool in Pune, Maharashtra, shared video of the wild monkey swimming laps in the pool to beat the May heat.
The video shows the monkey swimming, surfing atop a float and relaxing poolside while drying its fur.
Regulars said the monkey is often seen walking to the pool once crowds have thinned out for the day.
"The monkey usually comes to swim when the crowd is thin. No one minds it as it keeps to its own," said Niranjan Poddar, a regular visitor to the pool.
"It was spotted last year also," he said.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - May 28

Appeal for Amnesty campaign launches  1961

On this day in 1961, the British newspaper The London Observer publishes British lawyer Peter Benenson’s article “The Forgotten Prisoners” on its front page, launching the Appeal for Amnesty 1961–a campaign calling for the release of all people imprisoned in various parts of the world because of the peaceful expression of their beliefs.
Benenson was inspired to write the appeal after reading an article about two Portuguese students who were jailed after raising their glasses in a toast to freedom in a public restaurant. At the time, Portugal was a dictatorship ruled by Antonio de Oliveira Salazar. Outraged, Benenson penned the Observerarticle making the case for the students’ release and urging readers to write letters of protest to the Portuguese government. The article also drew attention to the variety of human rights violations taking place around the world, and coined the term “prisoners of conscience” to describe “any person who is physically restrained (by imprisonment or otherwise) from expressing…any opinion which he honestly holds and does not advocate or condone personal violence.”
“The Forgotten Prisoners” was soon reprinted in newspapers across the globe, and Berenson’s amnesty campaign received hundreds of offers of support. In July, delegates from Belgium, the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Germany, Ireland and Switzerland met to begin “a permanent international movement in defense of freedom of opinion and religion.” The following year, this movement would officially become the human rights organization Amnesty International.

Music Monday at Dansbury Depot
Doc Pappalardo was suckled by Pennsylvania Dutch wolves and rescued by itinerant Sicilian Stone-cutters who settled on the banks of the Delaware River. Doc was raised up there in the wilds of Shawnee-on- Delaware, home to a ridiculous number of famous people, including Jackie Gleason and Mr. Green Jeans, whose bass still travels with the band. Doc fondly remembers listening to the Grand Old Opry on his Grandmother’s gigantic Philco radio in his formative days, when everybody else was listening to do-wop and top forty hits. Multi-instrumentalists, The Renegade Ramblers are a loose tribe of musicians who delight in playing blues and traditional and original bluegrass music, with brief raids into Irish and Americana music.
Tonight we welcome David Sandt, Photographer, of Star Mountain Studio, as our featured artist! David's pictures are a visual testament to the beauty of the Poconos and near-by regions. Dave has charmed many visitors with his shows and many beautiful pictures hang in a multitude of houses and businesses throughout the area. Dave will be showing and selling his beautiful pieces of art inside the depot.
