May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, with "Melanoma Monday" focusing attention on the deadliest form of the disease. It’s curable if spotted early, but doctors say patients need to be a partner in the process. “Everyone should get really familiar with their own moles because that’s what’s going to save your life,” Dr. Julie Karen, a board certified dermatologist in New York, told TODAY. What should you look for? The ABCDEs of melanoma are basic signs, with doctors urging you to check your moles for asymmetry, border, color, diameter and evolution. The most important part is that last one: an evolving or changing mole, Karen said. That can include new symptoms like itching, scabbing and bleeding. Your doctor should be checking areas of your body where you may not even realize you can get skin cancer, including the scalp, eyelids, between your fingers and toes, and behind the ears, said Dr. Debra Wattenberg, a New York dermatologist and founder of NY Skin RX. Here are some warning signs never to ignore: 1. You notice an ugly duckling mole. Pay attention to a mole that doesn’t look like any of the others on your body, or is the lone mole on an otherwise spot-free part of your anatomy. Moles you’re born with can develop into skin cancer, she added. And just because you have a new mole, it doesn’t mean it will it turn out bad, but we get fewer new moles as we get older. 2. There's a vertical black streak on your nail. The cancer can look like a pigmented black or brown streak extending the length of your nail. Or it can be mistaken for a blood blister that stays towards the base of the nail — the cuticle area — and never grows out. 3. You experience vision problems. The second most common type of melanoma is melanoma of the eye. Less than half of patients will actually have symptoms, Patel said. If you do have them, they may show up as blurry vision, floaters, a growing dark spot on the iris, and other issues. 4. You have a pimple that won't go away. Basal or squamous cell skin cancer can look like a pimple that doesn’t clear up or go away after a few weeks, a sore that won’t heal or a scab that keeps recurring. 5. You notice a mole on the sole of your foot. 6. You experience changes after having a mole removed. If you’ve had a mole removed and you start seeing pigmentation that’s extending outside the scar, that’s extremely concerning, even if the original mole was benign, Karen said. A mole that’s spreading beyond its initial footprint means it has now changed or progressed. Be sure to tell your doctor if you spot a lump or a bump that occurs near the scar, or if you feel pain in that area. Pennsylvania highway sign hacked twice(UPI) An electronic sign that was supposed to warn drivers on a Pennsylvania highway of an upcoming detour was hacked twice in one day to show a profane message. Drivers on Interstate 95 Sunday in Ridley Park said they were surprised to spot the sign Sunday morning with a profane message instructing Delaware County to "suck" a certain male organ. "I was going south," driver Terry Banet told WPVI-TV. "I saw it immediately and said 'OMG, this thing was hacked!' and then I laughed." The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said officials learned of the message about 10 a.m. Sunday and dispatched the Delaware County Maintenance Unit to correct the sign. The crew reset the electronic sign, but it was soon hacked a second time and made to display the same message. The sign was turned toward a wall while officials investigate. "We are looking into the matter," a PennDOT representative told WCAU-TV. "It is not our sign and the contractor operates the sign within their construction zone." Tracking Every Cent of Taxpayer Money
With overwhelming bipartisan support, the House last week approved legislation to greatly enhance the public’s ability to track every cent Pennsylvania receives and how the state spends taxpayer dollars.
House Bill 1843 would enhance the Pennsylvania Treasury’s Transparency Portal website and make the program permanent so it is always available to taxpayers.
Specifically, the legislation would create the Commonwealth Checkbook, a user-friendly online ledger to show the public how and where their tax dollars are spent. The bill would also require state agencies to post budget requests online.
The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
Staying Safe Behind the Wheel
To help reduce incidents of distracted driving in Pennsylvania, the House Transportation Committee recently endorsed House Bill 1684, which would prohibit the use of hand-held mobile telephones and similar devices, except with the use of hands-free accessories, while operating a motor vehicle.
Under the bill, all motorists ages 18 and older would be prohibited from using a hand-held phone while the automobile is in motion. Additionally, drivers under the age of 18 would be prohibited from using both hand-held and hands-free devices. The bill would also make it clear that if an individual is holding his or her device while the car is in motion, he or she is presumed to be using it.
The first offense for violating this law would be $50 and two points to a driver’s license and $100 for a second or each subsequent offense.
The northeastern region of the United States – including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, Vermont, New Hampshire and West Virginia – all ban hand-held cell phone use. In total, 16 states ban hand-held cell phone use. The bill has now been sent for consideration to the entire House.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - May 17
Brown v. Board of Ed is decided 1954
In a major civil rights victory, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down an unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. The historic decision, which brought an end to federal tolerance of racial segregation, specifically dealt with Linda Brown, a young African American girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school in Topeka, Kansas, because of the color of her skin.
In 1896, the Supreme Court ruled in Plessy v. Ferguson that “separate but equal” accommodations in railroad cars conformed to the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection. That ruling was used to justify segregating all public facilities, including elementary schools. However, in the case of Linda Brown, the white school she attempted to attend was far superior to her black alternative and miles closer to her home. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) took up Linda’s cause, and in 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka reached the Supreme Court. African American lawyer (and future Supreme Court justice) Thurgood Marshall led Brown’s legal team, and on May 17, 1954, the high court handed down its decision.
In an opinion written by Chief Justice Earl Warren, the nation’s highest court ruled that not only was the “separate but equal” doctrine unconstitutional in Linda’s case, it was unconstitutional in all cases because educational segregation stamped an inherent badge of inferiority on African American students. A year later, after hearing arguments on the implementation of their ruling, the Supreme Court published guidelines requiring public school systems to integrate “with all deliberate speed.”

Should you have any questions or if you would like to volunteer please contact Tom Buist at 610-588-7360.

Music Monday at Dansbury Depot
Alex Allegra enjoys connecting with people through her music. She performs regularly, entertaining audiences with her original songs as well as select Country classics and Country Pop favorites. No stranger to the stage, Alex Allegra got her start studying acting, dance and vocal performance for more than a decade while participating in a number of local theater programs and audition-only choral groups. About 5 years ago, she combined some lyrics with one of the melodies she created, and her first song, Put Aside My Flaws, came to life. This new-found passion led to a breakthrough opportunity in the summer of 2015, when she was selected to attend the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp for aspiring singer-songwriters in Interlochen, Michigan. While there, she was featured in two public concerts, performing her first original as well as a song she wrote at camp. In August 2016, she launched her first music video featuring her song, Sayin' Goodbye, and in October of that same year, she released a demo CD, "My Journey," that features 7 of her originals. In the fall of 2017, Alex Allegra headed to Nashville to continue her music studies at Belmont University. You can learn more about Alex Allegra at www.alexallegramusic.com.

Doc Pappalardo was suckled by Pennsylvania Dutch wolves and rescued by itinerant Sicilian Stone-cutters who settled on the banks of the Delaware River. Doc was raised up there in the wilds of Shawnee-on- Delaware, home to a ridiculous number of famous people, including Jackie Gleason and Mr. Green Jeans, whose bass still travels with the band. Doc fondly remembers listening to the Grand Old Opry on his Grandmother’s gigantic Philco radio in his formative days, when everybody else was listening to do-wop and top forty hits. Multi-instrumentalists, The Renegade Ramblers are a loose tribe of musicians who delight in playing blues and traditional and original bluegrass music, with brief raids into Irish and Americana music.
Tonight we welcome David Sandt, Photographer, of Star Mountain Studio, as our featured artist! David's pictures are a visual testament to the beauty of the Poconos and near-by regions. Dave has charmed many visitors with his shows and many beautiful pictures hang in a multitude of houses and businesses throughout the area. Dave will be showing and selling his beautiful pieces of art inside the depot.

MEGA Sports Camp
Hey parents! Ready to drop a ton of fun right into your child’s summer? Then MEGA Sports Camp is right hosted by First United Methodist Church of Bangor is for you. The camp will be held Jun 18 - Jun 22 at 6:00pm at the Pennico Park in South Bangor.
First United Methodist Church in Bangor is offering kids entering kindergarten thru 5th grades one awesome time. “We want to give kids the chance to learn more about sports, discover character-building concepts, learn about God’s love, and have a whole lot of fun,” says Pastor Chris Hardy.
At MEGA Sports Camp, kids can participate in basketball and kickball (or sports basics for the little ones). It doesn’t matter if they’ve played all their life or just started yesterday, our camp helps improve their skills. All sorts of drills and practice games will get kids focused on the fundamentals that make athletes great. Plus, we create a positive and encouraging environment that pumps up their confidence and self-esteem.
Between sports sessions, coaches lead in songs and help kids experience inspiring sports and Bible stories to help character-building themes take hold in kids’ hearts. And most importantly, kids will discover God’s great love for them.
So come on over to Pennico Park in Bangor, hosted by First United Methodist Church. It starts on Monday, June 18th and lasts through Friday, June 22nd, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm each evening. For more information and registration check out our website at www.firstumcbangor.com.
